Beijing just opened their National Aquatic Center 2 weeks ago.
It's a very interesting work of architecture.

Just thought you would like to see the swim pool I trained in as a kid. The fellow in the picture is George Larson he won the 100 yards at the 1934 British Empire games. He held the Canadian Record for the 100 until I broke his record in that same pool. Here is a story about George on his 90th birthday http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/2004/10/20/pf-677993.html

Pretty amazing structure. I'm going to contact our city planners and suggest we get one.

"I want a water cube!" (say it in Veruca Salt's voice).
:groovy::groovy:

Lovely structure is The Cube. It's an icon that I expect will invigorate people all over the world to swim more.

More pictures are here.... http://photo.beijing2008.cn/subject-214047924-1.html

I was unsuccessful in finding out details about the pool.

In a similar vein, why do they have starting blocks in Lanes 0 and 9 if nobody uses them to race? (Yes, OK. For warm-ups and practicing starts but don't they have another pool for that? :p )

I think it's GORGEOUS, especially at night - WOW!

Inside is awesome as well - it's going to look great on TV... can't wait!

I'm sure there are plenty of meets that would use all 10 lanes for competition. The Olympics won't. But plenty of age group, masters, etc., meets would.
