The meet began last night, with 11 ACC teams competing (or at least represented if not really competing). Live stats at http://www.theacc.com/livestats/m-swim/

And from the Georgia Tech (host team, GO TECH!!!!!!!!) web site:

3 School Records Go Down As Jackets Sit In 2nd Place After Day 1 Of ACC Championships

Yellow Jackets break school records in both relays tonight; Noah Copeland's leadoff time in the 800-free was also a new record.

ATLANTA - The Georgia Tech men's swimming team broke school records in both relay events and is in second place after the first night of the ACC Swimming championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center on Wednesday. The Jackets broke school records in both the 200-medley relay and the 800-free relay. In addition, junior Noah Copeland set a school record of 1:35.79 for his 200-free leadoff time.

Virginia won both events tonight and leads the way with 80 points. Tech is second with 66 points, while Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech all have 60 points.

The ACC Men's Championship runs through Saturday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Prelims begin daily at 11:00 a.m. while finals will get underway each night at 7:00 p.m. Thursday's events include the 500-free, 200-IM, 50-free and 200-free relay. Rob-

Congratulations to Noah! That sounds like an awesome 200. Good luck to him and his team mates.

Congratulations to Noah. That time would be good enough to make our 4 x 200 free relay at Louisville. Rob, are you sure he is your son? That is a lot of fast twitch considering you are his father.

I dislike the Hokies immensely in football, but there are local swimmers on the H2Okies team. So, I'll have to root for them now. Did you notice that Kaan Tayla went .02 seconds faster than the winner of the Big 12 meet. I think there were 82 Longhorn swimmers competing in the 50 free, 3 Aggies and 1 guy from Missouri.:laugh2: Just kidding of course, but Texas has an awfully impressive team.

I think Noah is going through his youthful rebellious period. Rather than conform to the legendary Copeland distance reputation, he was heard muttering the following when he left his house for the semester, "Let's see what Dad says if I become a sprinter! I may even post a reaction time less than 2 seconds to further embarrass the family..."

:joker: Just kidding, Rob. Keep us posted. WebJim, Mark and I couldn't beat that 200 free time if we did a 3 person relay doing 25s in a short pool with fins, hand timing and rolling starts.

I've always been impressed with Maryland's sports programs, very admirable for a JC commuter college.

Thanks, Geek. Did our performance in the UMD/UNC Men's Basketball game back Jan. 19 leave a bad taste in your mouth? Or is it our back-to-back reigning national champion competitive cheer squad, who, btw, has only been around for 5 years now?:angel:
:lmao::lmao::lmao:I need a new keyboard. Go Heels!

Anyway, since SLKnight mentions the heels, local stud freshman heel Josh Hafkin clocked a 48.49 in his 100bk this morning, just ahead of UMD stud backstroker Dong Kim. :weightlifter:

I'm very interested to see how President Rob's sprinting offspring fares in the 200 finals this evening. His relay split would be the top time, but the UVA dude w/ the top time clocked a 1:33 anchoring his relay. I think it will be a really great battle for the top three places. :bolt:

Not really, since we are 11-2 in conference play and guaranteed a 1 or 2 NCAA seed. Just out of curiosity, is 8-6 your conference record or the number of hamburgers-twinkies that Coach Fridge eats as a mid-morning snack?

I won't even bother with your competitive cheer squad, that's sad.

It looks like 2 or 3 swimmers will break the oldest ACC record (set in 1990).

It seems that Masters status doesn’t curry any special favors for offspring. I guess it is up to the swimmers to settle it in the pool.

I’m hoping this is a phase Noah is going through and that some day he will come back over from the dark (sprint) side.

3:fish2: Copeland
4:fish2: McLean
5:fish2: Robison

Is there anyway to make the fish in lane 3 go faster?

Zing! Good one!
I think after the game in Durham, Gary's under a bit of pressure to get our kids' graduating, so we're starting to sacrifice practice time for study hall.

Actually, they're doing their darndest to underachieve and finish low so that we'll have to play Penn State next year in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge.

Excellent swim for young Copeland! A little tired at the end but he hung on for 2nd.

And Rob, you can see from his reaction time that he really DID inherent some of your slow-twitch fibers...!:joker:

Noah’s reaction time is still faster than his fathers…

And yes the last 50 looked a bit ragged. I think it is after effects of yesterday’s 2 500’s. But he went after it. And he was able to anchor the 400 MR in a 43.35 (slow reaction time again) and good enough for 2nd place.

Today, he went 43.92 (rt 0.80) in the prelims of the 100 free and is second seed into the finals.:cheerleader::banana::cheerleader:

Hopefully with trials around the corner, you won't make him mow the lawn too much this summer!

And to close out the night Noah anchored the 4 X 100 Free relay with a 42.91:bouncing:

Now we’re hoping he is fast enough for an invitation to NCAA’s.

Good luck to him. That's some fast swimming, especially since I'm sure the water was quite wavy on that anchor leg.

It pains me to admit it but UVa had two excellent meets (men and women), and their 1st-years looked particularly strong.

Richmond natives and freshmen Liz Shaw (UVa), Tyler Harris (UNC) and Ian Voigt (UVa) had some good swims (especially Liz: 3 A-cuts, 2 ACC records. Sheesh.) Great kids, too.
