Almost time for the 2008 NCAA basketball tournament.

I've set up a Yahoo! fantasy tournament group for all of us USMS Forumites. Here's your chance to pick your favorite school to go all the way to the Final Four! :woot:

No money is involved; it's a competition strictly for bragging rights. :drink: No knowledge of basketball is necessary. (A couple of years ago one of my co-workers made all of his picks based on school mascots.)

If you would like to participate, please send me a Private Message. I will send you the link and the super-secret password. :dunno:

The only thing I ask is that when you create your bracket, you use your Forums name. It'll be easier to keep track of everyone that way.

Take the court with Yahoo! Fantasy Sports Tournament Pick'em, a free bracket-style game that lets you show your college basketball smarts by picking the winners of this year's tournament games.

You'll get points for every correct pick you make, and while you're watching all the action unfold, we do all the hard work of gathering statistics, computing point totals and updating standings.

Registration begins on Wednesday, February 20. The deadline for submitting your final picks for every round is the scheduled tip-off time of the first game of the 2008 Tournament on Thursday, March 20.

To join someone else's private group (ours is "USMS Forumites"), you must get the group ID # and password from the group creator.

All users can join up to five total groups (any combination of private, public, and Fans Of groups), but can only associate one of their brackets with each group. For example, if you have joined the "Fans of Arizona" group, you are only allowed to assign one bracket to that particular group. If you later join a Private group you are allowed to create a different bracket than the one made in the "Fans of Arizona" group.

Note that public and private groups may use a custom scoring system. But all users, regardless of group affiliation, are tracked on the overall leaderboard using Yahoo!'s default scoring system.

Just bumping back up to the top... I think they pick the teams tomorrow. There's still plenty of time to sign up; your picks just have to be submitted before tip-off of the first game on Thursday, March 20th.

The 65 teams have been announced!

Top seeds: North Carolina, Memphis, Kansas and UCLA.

The famous USMS "Arizona" relay team will be interested to know that Arizona made it but Arizona State did not. :dunno:

smontanaro

Among the group are avid fans of North Carolina, Vanderbilt, UCLA, and Kansas...

There's plenty of time to get in on the fun. Send me a PM and I'll send you the super-secret password. And you don't have to know anything about college basketball. Yahoo! has a feature where you can tell the computer to fill in your brackets. I just tried it and chose "Random Picks". It created brackets with Winthrop and Western Kentucky playing in the final game, with Winthrop winning. :dunno: Hmmm, maybe I'll tell it to try again...

Well, I am SHOCKED that I'm in first place! I can reassure you all I'm going to take a hit down the line, since I picked Vanderbilt as my eventual champion and they DIDN'T EVEN SHOW UP against Siena Friday night. I don't think I have ever been more disappointed in a team's performance in my life. Three of my other Final Four teams are still alive though (Memphis, Tennessee, UCLA).

Those were some finishes yesterday! Davidson (congratulations, Jerry Clark)! Western Kentucky! Memphis! Tennessee! CBS was switching back and forth between so many games I had a hard time keeping track of who I was watching!

Meg - Vandy's performance is payback for them busting everyone's bracket back in 1988 when they upset Pitt on the back of shooting legend Barry Goheen.

MegSmath
March 24th, 2008, 04:09 PM
Funny you should mention Barry Goheen. Earlier this year I got my letter from the National Commodore Club (yes, I know a Commodore is a dorky mascot) saying it was time to renew my membership. They were in the midst of the stretch where they lost 4 out of their first 5 SEC games (all on the road; somebody in the SEC scheduling office must hate Vanderbilt) and I said "Boy, your timing could not be worse. I don't know that I want to renew my membership!" Then I looked down to see who had signed the letter, and it was Barry Goheen. He who hit seven game-winning three-pointers for Vanderbilt during his career (including the one you mentioned against Pitt). Heck, if Barry was asking me for my help, he was going to get it, so I renewed online on the spot.

But you're right that Vanderbilt has had more than its share of bracket-busting wins over the years, and was due to experience the flip side. Knowing that does not take the sting away, though.

The scenarios for the final four results in our pool are:

If Memphis wins it all (regardless of who they play in the final game), Tracy Grilli wins.
If Kansas wins it all (regardless of who they play in the final game), Jayhawk wins.
If UCLA wins it all (regardless of who they play in the final game), JimRude wins.
If NC wins over Memphis in the final game, matysekj wins.
If NC wins over UCLA in the final game, it goes to the tie breaker to determine if aquageek (our Daddy) or Chris Stevenson wins.

So Jim, what you're really saying is regardless what happens next, I'm out. All that's left for me at this point is to start accusing teams of steroid use.

I've been attending and/or watching the 'Heels since 1972 and I can honestly say that was the third most horrifying game I have ever witnessed. If we had a dog, he would have been beaten. First, was 1981 loss to IU and second was 1993 Boston College loss. Kansas played a great game. Now we can just hope Lawson and Hansbrough stay put, unlikely.

Anna, congrats to your team and good luck to them in the final.

As long as we are crying in our beer: the loss to IU in 1984 (with Jordan and Perkins playing) hit me pretty hard since I was an undergrad at the time.

Last night during the game, I was in the middle of grading tests from 65 students (still am, actually). I had them all praying for a Carolina win so that I would be in a good mood while grading. I'm a big believer in spreading the pain...darn students just didn't cheer hard enough...

I feel your pain, Geek. Conventional wisdom is that a close loss is more painful than a blowout, but that's not true! Last year, when Vanderbilt got cheated out of beating Georgetown (that guy WALKED!), I got over it in a couple of days. They'd played as hard as they could and I was proud of them. This year, when they laid an egg in the first round, I was (and still am) so mad at them I can hardly see straight!

I was not surprised that Kansas won, but was surprised at the WAY they won.

As for my performance in our pool, I am taking consolation in the fact that I have actually had more correct picks than anyone else, but most of mine were in the early rounds, which count less.:(

Congratulations to Anna Lea, and the Jayhawks! Really wish Memphis could have hit their free throws down the stretch.

Your mention of the fireworks reminded me of a story my friend Kregor told on herself when Kentucky won in 1978. She was in med school then, and had an apartment near campus. She heard all the hoopla and remarked to her roommate "They must be excited because exams are over." How clueless do you have to be to not know your school is playing for the NCAA championship!
