I've been working on butterfly and am struggling with what to do with my hands/arms after they enter. I've been told it's a sort of hourglass motion where you sweep out a bit (or is it more of a hand skull?) and then pull your hands back down to your stomach. But when I try this it feels quite awkward and seems to slow down my stroke. Also, when I watch videos of Phelps and Crocker it looks as if they skip this outsweep and just pull right down to their stomachs on entry. Anyway, I'm totally confused on this point. Any advice would be appreciated.

Think outsweep, insweep, push towards your hips.
High elbows are important.
