Even the selection of the United States Olympic team is being affected by the severe flooding in Iowa. Next weekend’s Hy-Vee Triathlon, the third and final qualification race to determine who goes to Beijing, has been washed out of its home at Gray’s Lake Park near downtown Des Moines and moved seven miles west.

“Our flood situation is dire, but our event is still going on,” the event spokeswoman Christine Friesleben said.

But there is a strong chance that the swim portion of the elite race on June 22 will not take place — it has already been canceled for all lower rungs — because of high water and concerns over E. coli levels. That has left USA Triathlon officials scrambling to determine the best way to complete the men’s and women’s teams that will be sent to the Beijing Games....
