View Full Version : Question for a USA Swimming certified coach?

Is it possible for a swim team to be USA Swimming sanctioned, but to only hold practices in the summer (as opposed to a year-round program)?

We have a summer recreation swim program, non-USA Swimming sanctioned, which has been in place for the past ~20 years, in a small Arizona community of about 11,000 people. We have about 120 swimmers this summer (our largest season to date) but are one of the very few non-USA Swim sanctioned teams in the area. This poses some difficulties, as many of our swimmers are quite talented and would like to compete on a larger scale against other USA sanctioned teams (in Phoenix and the like) but do not have the opportunity to compete at larger meets, and are restricted to racing in tiny rec meets over the summer.

The team and its board have become very accustomed to the summer recreation program, and have long been hesitant to undertake the process of becoming USA Swimming sanctioned, but I think that it's high time to give our swimmers more opportunities, even if the process may be somewhat tedious. However, we only have access to the municipal pool for training during the summer months, and the city is uncooperative when it comes to the idea of using/heating the pool during winter months.
I've tried to find some information on the USA Swimming website, but haven't come up with any conclusive answers on the subject... Any information you could provide would be highly appreciated! (personal experience, web links, etc.)

P.S. Also, any information/experiences on becoming a USA Swimming sanctioned team would be wonderful as well... We're trying to come up with some compelling arguments as to why we should go through the process, in order to convince our current swim board (none of whom have experience with the USA program) why it would be beneficial.

With all of this interest, why only summer?

Well, we don't have the facilities to swim in the winter - there's only one pool in the community that could be used for training purposes, and the city does not want to spend the money to heat the pool or take measures to keep it open during the winter months. So, until a new swimming facility is built (something doesn't seem likely to happen for the next 15 years), we're confined to using our current pool, April-August (and fight a losing battle to let our high school swim team use the pool through October.)

The page has lots of information on starting a new club along with contact information for the Arizona Local Swimming Committee.

Contact the Registrar / Membership Chair for your LSC. Each LSC defines what a "seasonal" team would be. There may be a considerable amount of administrative effort required that may or may not be appropriate for for your team.

You also have the option of registering your athletes as Unattached without registering your team at all. They may compete in USAS competition in individual events. You wouldn't be able to advertise your team as a USA Swimming team in this case.
