I can't make the SPMA SCM meet this December and am looking for an alternative ... ideally fast pool, strong competition. Can anyone recommend a meet in any other part of the country?

How about mid October in the East Bay? Walnut Creek Masters is hosting the Pacific Masters SCM Championships 10/10-12/08. Contact Kerry O'Brien:
swim4wc@netscape.net for more info.

Check out the Tyr series. I think there's a SCM meet in Chicago. It's not mid-Dec but I think it's the first weekend.

Rutgers University is hosting the Colonies Zones SCM Champs in the second week of December. It is in North Jersey.

Thanks so much. Brian, I'd love to do the Walnut Creek meet, but have a conflict then. pwolf, the Tyr series sounds good, but timing's likely not right for me either.

tjrpatt -- do you know which website I should look at for the Rutger's meet? That's a nice pool, if its the same one they used for LCM nationals a few years back.

Hey Patrick, the meet website is at

http://www1.recreation.rutgers.edu/Content/SCM_Colonies_Zone_Championship.asp

Doesn't look like there is an entry form yet. You might want to try

http://www.colonieszone.org/

in the coming months (under "Competition").

Maybe you can convince your dad to enter, too; it isn't too far from Richmond. I'm thinking of going if my schedule works out.

Chris,

thanks for the link and I'd love the swim there. My problem is that the 1st weekend in December is bad for me -- big swim meet for my kids in Arizona that weekend. there appear to be 3 great meets on that 1st weekend in December -- Long Beach, Grand Prix and the Colonies meet at Rutgers. I just wish one of these would move a week later.

I'll have to keep the colonies meet in mind for 2009, though, as I'm often on the east coast anyway for work.

There should be a New England SCM Champs in December. I don't see anything up about it now, but it is usually further into December. There will also be a two-day meet at Asphalt Green in NYC December 13 & 14. It is a new meet, so I have no idea what it will be like, but it is a nice pool.

Patrick,
Stay in Arizona for mid-november Sun Devil meet. Who wants to go to some arctic tundra in the middle of winter to swim (unless you have to be there for work or, heaven forbid, you actually live and scrape out an existence in one of these forsaken places of which you speak)? The summer heat has baked your brain my friend. December is a perfect time for getting fat and not swimming.:(

I believe it is tentatively Dec. 12-14 at BU.

Univ Missouri (Columbia Missouri at Mizzou Aquatic Center) has a 2-day SCM meet also on 6-7-Dec-2008.

So far 4 world records have been set at the meets and with masters being the only group holding SCM meets, ALL of the pool records for SCM are from our masters meets.

Kurt,

I'll be at the Ron John meet in Tempe; that's always a good one. However, as I took the summer completely off swimming, I figure I need a few more weeks to try to get back in shape and try to swim fast in December ... so that I can then enjoy the holidays in style.

See you in La Jolla?

Yes, it's a very nice pool and a fast meet. It attracts quite a few people outside the New England area. Here are the results from last year so you can see how the competition was.

http://greatbaymasters.org/07scmchamp.php

All the events on Sunday had far fewer people because there was a major snowstorm.

This year's meet info is not up yet but will be here:

Good pool IF you're not stuck in an outside lane with a ladder in your face and bare walls with no lane lines. Any idea if they are planning on changing the order of events this year?

(I have the same problem as you. My kid swims in the Dolan meet every year the first weekend in Dec. It conflicts with all the SCM meets except apparently the NE meet.)

I don't remember the outside lane problem. That's weird that there weren't any lane lines there. I believe they change the order of events every year but don't quote me on that.

Good pool but warm ups are crowded. That's the only gripe I have about it. So not much to moan about really.

Nope, no lane lines. I could literally feel the water bouncing off the wall and hitting me. As I was in an outside lane 3 times for my best events, it was hard to miss!

I'd be more inclined to attend if all the fly and back sprints weren't on the same day.

I may go to the Virginia Beach SCM meet in November instead this year.

There is normally a SCM meet at the Olympic pool in Atlanta every year, but nothing has been posted yet. You can keep checking www.dixiezone.org (http://www.dixiezone.org) for info.

My understanding is that there will NOT be a SCM meet either in GA or at the GA Tech pool for 2008.

These meets would be great to do but my funds are limited right now. If I can't drive to the meet, I can't go. Maybe next year, I can afford to do one of these meets because it looks like it would be fun.
