Hello, all. I'm a very poor swimmer, having never learned until college. I never got the hang of the crawl, and still feel uncomfortable in deep water. I'm 40 now, and want to "get the hang of swimming". I live in Madison, WI, and was wondering...does anyone know of any good places for adult swimming lessons? It looks like the YMCA here only has an Adult Masters course, and I'm no master.
Any advice or experiences of anyone who was in a similar boat (heh) would be greatly appreciated.

Ed - The East YMCA still offers adult swim lessons. You can check the Y's website, http://ymcadanecounty.org/programs/aquatic%20images/aqua_A_F08.pdf

On another note, I coach the Masters program at the East Y and I take "novice" swimmers as well as very advanced swimmers. Right now our program is full for this session, but you might be able to get in the next session that begins in mid October. I give private lessons, but if yoiu can get into our program or sign up for group beginner lessons that would less expensive. I've found that most people who are uncomfortable in the water have never understood the importance of balance in the water, which requires you to put you head down.

Call me and we can talk more about these options, 770-2307. Dick Pitman

Ed - Here's the link to the MSCR Program Guide for this Fall:
http://www.mscr.org/my_files/CurrentProgramGuide.pdf You'll find posting of Adult Lessons somewhere between P. 38 to 43. DPitman
