I just got back from the pool. As I was swimming, I was wondering how they did.

Glad to see National Champs are in Texas, even if they are in CS. I think I might try and go.

I love floswimming when they capture meets like this and I make time to watch it. I only had a chance to check out the two events I care about -- men's and women's 500 frees. Things I noticed on just a cursory watch:

traditional suits on all swimmers, both sexes
turns: very few of the swimmers were doing much in the way of SDK off the walls. I've been debating whether or not this should be part of my 500 free strategy.
kicking: the guy who won the men's race had an interesting approach in that he appeared to 6 beat kick the first half of each lap and then ramp down to a 2 beat into the wall. The women seemed to be more consistently 4 to 6 beat kicking throughout the race.

I hope NCAAs will get onto the web. I'm looking forward to watching more.

Not sure if floswimming will be permitted to video NCAA's because of broadcasting rights issues

Coaches made a no-tech-suit briefs only agreement before the meet

some swimmers SDK in the 500, usually like 2 or 3 off turns
some take 5 or more off the start and some take 4, 5, or 6 on the last turn

years ago bruce hayes used to 6 beat kick off turns then settle into a 2 beat kick

watch the mens 200 fly it's a pretty exciting race
also the Mens 100 free
Matt Target went 42.40 mid season in a brief

Do you know if that was just for this dual meet? Or, is this a general agreement across Div I coaches for dual meets?

So the women are leading Arizona by 30 and the mean are training Arizona by 20.

Anyone have thoughts on if the women can hold off an AZ charge and if the men have enough to make a comeback? Would love to see Texas sweep this one.

This is my first year swimming and my first year watching swimming times. How normal is this in comparison to new seasons in years past? I assume that without the suits all these times are high above PBs and records, but how much of it is attributable to coming away from off-season?

Do swimmers at UT even have an off-season?!

Our responses are about you being stupid enough to think that elite swimmers at the university of texas, which has some of the best coaches in the world, would actually care what a hack like you thinks about anything.

Hey thewookiee
On a more serious note, there are people in the elite swimming field who echo the sentiments of "hacks" like me.

As for my comment on this particular thread (that sparked another inferno -as usual-), I was just speculating that someone at UT might be thinking it's time to "put the worms back in the can" and try to eliminate the variables that tech suits have brought into the fray.

Dolphin,

Please start your own anti-suit thread rather than hijacking this one?

UT and every other NCCA Div 1 school follows the NCAA suit rules (http://tr.im/ncaasuitrules).
Coach & athlete opinions don't matter, the rules are set, they are what they are.

Men will wear suits like the:

Speedo FS PRO Jammers ( http://tr.im/fsprojammer)
or
TYR Tracer Light Jammer (http://tr.im/tracerlightjammer)

Women will wear suits like the:

Tyr Tracer Light Short John (http://tr.im/tracerlightshort)
or the
Speedo FS Pro Recordbreaker Kneeskin (http://tr.im/fsprokneeskin)

And the people that are on the elite scene, that have contributed to the sport in some form or fashion, their opinions are respected. Just like people on this forum that have contributed to swimming, such as ande, fortress, stillwater, midas, swimshark, geek, they have all contributed to many discussions on the forum and to fellow teammates. They have offered advice on swimming topics outside of tech suits issues to help people.

You haven't offered helpful advice on swimming related topics such as training, techincal advice, meet preparation. Therefore, you are a hack.

And check the date of the duel meet. It was last Jan. Both teams wore tech suits at their respective conference meets, ncaa's, usa nationals. A lot of teams didn't pull out tech suits for duel meets. They didn't feel the need to waste time putting on the suit or using the suit for a duel meet, where most teams train through them anyway.

Chris, you must not have seen Wolf's new start. He waits til everyone is on the blocks, then jumps up and does a 1950's style take off, while everyone else is hitting the water, so I doubt he gets that 1 sec.

Interesting. Given the way the NCAA letter was worded, especially WRT disqualifications, perhaps the coaches got together and said "Screw it, until this mess is 100% clear, the teams will just wear something that absolutely no one can say is against the rules while giving no one a 'suit advantage' ."

Smart.

Great thread, guys! Texas is my favorite NCAA team. That said, I'm totally psyched about the Invite, but totally bummed that we won't get the coverage on Floswimming...

If you all like UGA swimming, there's a specific channel on Youtube where videos of the most current meets are updated every week. Kind of like Flo, but without the commentary. There's also some great NCAA Nat's coverage, like Basson's 500 free and Clary's 3:35 (!!!!) 400 IM.

Heather,

My understanding is she is no longer on the UT womens team or listed on the Team Roster (http://www.texassports.com/sports/w-swim/mtt/tex-w-swim-mtt.html)

I have not read an official announcement. To me, SwimmingWorld.com would be the definitive news source for this & there's nothing so far. She's entered in the Texas Invite (http://www.tsc.utexas.edu/results/index.htm) and listed as UN, probably for Unattached.

Eddie coached her during the 2010 summer season & she is continuing to train very hard with the UT mens team & post grads.
She's done some impressive sets in the pool and keeps getting stronger in the weight room.

Feb. 2nd, 2011. EDDIE Reese is one of the best interviews in the sport of swimming, and this one touches on all the topics. The '11 World Championship team coach talks about the odds of repeating as NCAA Championships, some of his up and coming super stars, the changes in the Longhorn post-grad group, his retirement, and much much more.

I don't know if I've ever seen 1650 splits quite like this before. His 500's were 4:43.43, 4:37.50, and 4:34.52. He noticably accelerated at the 550 and 1000. I wonder if there was a bet involved.

Smith is the son of two former Texas swimmers – John Smith and the legendary Tori Trees – so most fans anticipated this decision, leaving out the suspense and debate. John Smith isn't legendary? :bolt:

John Smith isn't legendary? :bolt:

John was very accomplished, as a freshman he was on the 1981 NCAA team where UT won Div 1 NCAAs for the 1st time. He was an excellent classical pianist, drew some magnificent images on the locker room chalkboard, and had an incredible work ethic in the pool, I remember seeing him do some remarkable stuff in practice. I think he got 2nd in the 200 fr at NCAAs and all his years at UT he was a key member of many relays.

Clark Smith 4:08.82 500 free and not even 1 sec off the american record.

Incredible, in that 500, Clark averaged 49.764 per 100.
Perhaps this was the swim of the meet?

Sat Dec 4th, 2015 Clark Smith broke Erik Vendt's 8:36.49 American Record in the 1,000 yard freestyle when he raced the 1,650 finals at the UT Invite in Austin, TX with a time of 8:33.93. Since he did it as part of a 1,650, for his time to count, he just needed to legally finish the race.

Connor Jaeger currently holds 1,650 National Record, his time was 14:23.52.
He averaged 52.33 per 100 in that race.
That time & pace should be well within Clarks reach. Clark's likely to swim a 1,650 in the next few months and probably at NCAAs.

The UT Swim center main pool has a leak. It is almost empty and awaiting repairs.

here's the most recent update.

Ande

"The TSC staff and UT Construction teams have been working hard to find the leak and get us fixed up. Because this is a 40 year old pool and the return lines (where the leak is) are under the pool, it is not an easy fix. They have decided to move forward with rerouting the return lines around the exterior of the pool to prevent this from happening again. This unfortunately means we are making plans through the end of April for sharing the well and alternate pool space.
Even with the significant amount of programming, all of the coaches (UT Athletics, TXLA, KHEd, RecSports) have all worked together to minimize the impact on training and we think we have a pretty good schedule.

Each coach will reach out with any changes to their individual schedules soon. While sometimes lanes/diving space is reduced, practices times will remain the pretty unaltered (Masters mornings will be scheduled, as usual, based on UT Athletics).

***Note this of course means our two hosted April swim meets are cancelled. Coaches are working on alternate meet opportunities for the age group swimmers.***

On a lighter note, if you haven’t checked out our Facebook and Instagram posts to name/hashtag our “waterless situation” you should! Our members and followers have been very creative…

#wickedleaks #savedbythewell #paininthedrain (just to name a few)

We remain positive and grateful for the space we do have!
We will continue to keep you in the loop and we apologize for any inconvenience."
