I have to say that it is an interesting change going from age group/ability level swimming for the past 10 years to coaching Master's Swim Team! Adults' learning styles are so different from a younger swimmers'!

Do you have any funny/anecdotal stories about your first experiences with coaching Masters?

My first session was a doozy; all the swimmers had been coached for a few years by a gentleman that never used intervals, always, and I mean always used fins, and finished every workout with a pull set.

I outlined my training philosophy (IM-based/endurance) and went to work. I banished the fins for all but specific sets, put nearly everything on an interval, and began stroke drill work to bring everyone up to doing a legal (touches/turns) 100 IM.

That was 3 months ago; now, they actually prefer kick sets without fins, and have started to challenge the intervals. It has been loads of fun!
