Will Freeman Breaks National Independent High School Record -- February 15, 2009

ATLANTA, Georgia, February 15. WILL Freeman, a junior at Greater Atlanta Christian, shot down the national independent high school record in the 500-yard freestyle at the Georgia State 1-4A Championships yesterday.

Freeman checked in with a swift time of 4:19.32. That performance wiped out the 4:19.54 set by Fran Crippen of Germantown Academy back in 2002. The oldest high school record on the books still stands as the overall standard as Jeff Kostoff of Upland High in Calif., charted a 4:16.39 in the 500-yard free on May 14, 1983.

It was an awesome sight to see!! The crowd was on their feet for the last 100 of his race....we knew he was having an amazing swim. I'm so proud of this young man. He swims for the high school that I coach but....I can't take credit for coaching him. He swims for Swimatlanta under Chris Davis. I just get to watch and encourage him when he comes to our high school meets. He is a very nice and humble young man. :applaud:

Congrats to him! From the results of meets all over the country, there were several national records this weekend. My old school, The Baylor School, downed two national records on the girls side(one overall and one independent school record) in the 200 medley and 200 free relay.

There was another young man at another state meet that blasted the 200 IM mark.

The Caramel girls high school in Indiana broke two relay records(one public and one overall) in the 200 free and medley relay races.

What a great weekend for swimming. Congrats to all!

Beth, THANK YOU for posting this! Congratulations to you, all the swimmers on your team, and Will! I'm so lucky to swim at the pool that he trains at. And occasionally I get to train w/ his coach. He's awesome to watch at practices. And I've been in his lane a few times. VERY inspirational. He's truly the distance king in my mind. I remember watching him swim (distance free and fly) and realizing. . . oh, so this is how you are supposed to train. Big eye opener for me.

4:19 is nuts no matter how old you are. Where is he going to college?

I just asked him. If he responds I'll let ya'll know.

That Guy, you gotta witness it for yourself. He's an animal in practice. No holding back.

He is amazing to watch. I saw him swim the 1000 at a meet in Nashville this past fall. It was a thing of beauty. I got chills seeing it. Beth, that must have been awesome for you and your team! Congratulations to all of you!

Wow, I would be happy if I could get his opening 100 y time in my own 100 y free. Those splits are pretty spot on, I expect we might see this guy in 2012 if he keeps it up!
