Drills for Thrills:
Hip Rotation and "Board Wag"
by Kerry O'Brien

Using a kickboard as a pull buoy has its challenges as far as keeping it in place. But it can also provide a very useful tool for both swimmer and coach to draw attention to the need for hip rotation on both freestyle and backstroke stroke mechanics. The idea is to position the board long-ways, so that part of the board is underwater and part sticks up like a shark fin. The part of the board underneath creates a resistant force that requires more hip drive into the hand entry. Swimmers will feel the pressure immediately, and coaches can see these boards wagging in the air as their swimmers focus on hip rotation. After a few laps of "Board Wag," remove the kickboard, and the added effort that was required before is now transferred into a hip-driven entry that also creates more core force through the power phase of the arm cycle. We have found it to be beneficial to limit the "Board Wag" to single laps (be they 25 yards or 50 meters), as turns will often launch the board airborne, or what we refer to as "popping toast." Wag your way to a more rotational long-axis stroke!

Kerry is the Head Coach of Walnut Creek Masters. Kerry is a former U.S. Masters Swimming Coach of the Year Award recipient and was one of seven featured coaches at last weekend's SwimFest'09.

Call for On-deck Coaches

The USMS Coaches Committee, through the On-Deck Coaching Program, offers on-deck coaching assistance for swimmers during warm-ups at USMS National Championship Events and at the annual United States Aquatic Sports (USAS) Convention. Coaches monitor the sprint lanes during the early morning warm-ups at USMS Nationals, giving swimmers start commands and timing sprints or pace repeats if requested. All participating coaches are given a special USMS Coaches T-shirt, great for being recognized on deck.

Online registration for On-Deck Coaching in Indy will be available soon.
If you have questions, feel free to direct them to me at chriscolburn@gmail.com

We're always looking for coaches! You don't need to volunteer all four days. Just pick a day or days when you can help and sign up! Those of you who volunteer will receive more details via email before you arrive at the meet.

Speedo Presents:
The Speed Training Fin
by the professionals at Speedo

Kicking is undoubtedly one of the most important elements in being a great swimmer. If you take a look at the world class athletes of today, a common theme between them is a steady kick. Now you ask yourself, how can my swimmers learn to kick this way? Well, as with most things, the answer is practice.

The professionals at Speedo offer information about a new training tool and provide practice sets and drills to improve your kick for optimal performance... Read more

SwimFest'09 Wrap-up
by Chris Colburn, U.S. Masters Swimming Coaches Committee Chair

On Friday, May 22, over 75 swimmers and coaches converged on The Woodlands, Texas, with a sense of anticipation to take part in SwimFest '09, U.S. Masters Swimming's first national coach and swimmer clinic. As a first-time clinic, there are always possibilities and expectations for how the coaches will present their material, what swimmers and coaches can and will learn at the clinic, and how the overall experience will turn out. SwimFest both exceeded expectations and put together an amazing experience in an outstanding new facility at the Conroe ISD Natatorium. Featuring seven highly-decorated and award-winning coaches, including five Speedo/USMS Coaches of the Year (Mike Collins, Kris Houchens, Susan Ingraham, Jim Montgomery and Kerry O'Brien), two Olympic gold medalists (Montgomery and Whitney Hedgepeth) and a highly decorated professional triathlete and open-water swimmer (Sara McLarty), Club and Coach Services assembled a staff of the best and brightest mentor coaches in Masters swimming, and they delivered an outstanding performance.

Chris Colburn recaps the event...

Are We Ready To Host a Meet?
by Kris HouchensAre we ready to host a meet? How much time really goes into hosting a meet? Can we host a meet even if our program is small? How can we prepare ourselves to host a meet?
Many of us use this time of year to recover from the long-course swimming season, get our calendars ready for the upcoming school year, and re-energize and refocus on the year ahead. So, do your busy life and the busy lives of your club members have room for a meet?
Kris Houchens, YMCA IndySwim Fit Head Coach, served as the 2009 Long Course National Championship Meet Director. She has hosted meets of various size and scope in the past and has now tested her meet director skills at one of the largest events held within U.S. Masters Swimming. Houchens has outlined her critique of IndySwim Fit's performance in handling the championship meet, as well as offered a few pointers to anyone thinking, "I think my program could host a meet ..." New Opportunity for U.S. Masters Swimming Coaches
The U.S. Masters Swimming Coaches Committee is committed to the education and support of Masters coaches. The Committee's big push for 2009 and 2010 is the development of a new curriculum for Masters coaching certification. The program, which will be developed in partnership with the American Swimming Coaches Association and administered by ASCA, strives to improve the knowledge, professionalism, and credibility of our coaching ranks with a common standard for evaluating and certifying Masters coaches. The goal of the Coaches Committee is to have the curriculum completed in time for the 2010 ASCA World Clinic, so it can be offered as part of the Masters track. All coaches who are members of U.S. Masters Swimming will be eligible for certification using the new curriculum and guidelines at that time. If you would like to find out more about the program, or if you would like to contribute to the curriculum project, please contact the Coaches Committee Chair, Chris Colburn, at coaches@usms.org.

Club Assistant can assist you in creating a virtual store - an online boutique offering the brands you like and the specialized equipment you prefer that your swimmers use.

Send out member email announcements easily through your Club Assistant, informing swimmers of new training tools for sale and items with special discounts. Give out store coupons to swimmers who refer a new club member. You can also have a link to your online store right on your team's website, making it easy for your swimmers to buy the gear they need at any time.
Fundraising for your club may also be tied into your Club Assistant online swim store. Most vendors offer incentives to clubs for promoting their merchandise. Drills for Thrills: Underwater Turns
by Nate McBride, West Side Swim Club
When I was a freshman in college my older brother Ben, a senior at Brown, first taught me the underwater turn drill. He had been taught the drill by Chris Martin when he was at Peddie in the early 90s. I am not sure where Chris learned this drill or if he invented it, but it remains a part of my swimming and coaching to this day.

The drill itself is simple in its design. The swimmer, upon approaching the wall, uses the last stroke at the flags as a diving stroke to throw him or herself into a deep dive to the bottom of the pool where the swimmer then, in a streamline, butterfly or flutter kicks to the wall and flips completely underwater. The swimmer then has to streamline back out to the flags and resume swimming.

This drill accomplishes many things:
The drill works the lungs, especially when done during a sprint or hard effort set.
The drill is an easy way to achieve a high VO2 level quickly if you have a shorter warm-up time and don't feel like sprinting.
The drill works the abdominal muscles as you have very little momentum underwater; the turn requires the core to make the revolution.
I like to have my swimmers do 200s with underwater turns at each wall. I will put them on a breathing pattern (e.g. 3/5/3/7 by 25), or have them breathe to their weak side only, while doing the 200s. This forces the swimmers to exercise complete breathing control while maintaining a strong pace. This drill may seem intimidating; however the swimmers who have mastered it clear their walls with ease and speed and without feeling the need to take a giant gulp of air at the breakout stroke.
Designing Workouts to Benefit All Your Swimmers
by Lionel Moreau, Auburn Masters; and Ashley Gangloff
How can we make sure that all our swimmers are getting a good workout- one that is challenging for each swimmer's respective ability and experience level?

There are two things we must remember as Masters coaches: First, most swimmers are coming to us for direction. They need our attention to improve. After all, they could very well swim along the black line with the public, but have chosen to attend a Masters practice instead. And second, the same workout for all isn't going to do it.

Here are six tips that will be helpful when you are developing your program and planning the different workouts to offer your swimmers.

Website Widgets:
Keeping Your Team Website Current
by the Professionals at
Widgets are tools provided by websites that help you take dynamic content from those sites and publish it directly on your website. Widgets fall broadly into two categories: automatic updating and manual updating.

Automatic Updating
Twitter Feeds and Facebook Social Networking: Linking to Twitter and Facebook can direct people to those websites respectively, but if you want to keep people on your website, Twitter and Facebook provide widgets.

RSS and XML Feeds: By using RSS feeds you can have content from swimming news websites presented as articles on your website. Club Assistant provides XML feeds for upcoming swim meets including regional, LMSC, Zone and National meets.

Manual Updating
You Tube Videos: If you want to take video of that perfect breaststroke technique you coached last week, you can utilize a You Tube widget on your website to present your video without having to learn a thing about data compression or embedding videos.

In addition to generic Web widgets, Club Assistant has swimming specific widgets that you can use to update your website at a moment's notice, without having to call your webmaster.
Announcements Widget: Update your website without knowing HTML
Calendar Widget: Display events, meets, practice schedules
Meets Widget: Show meet results, meet timelines and meet registrations
Events Widget: Present current and upcoming events
Other Club Assistant widgets include Coaches, Facilities, Newsletters, Birthdays and more.
Adding dynamic content to your website is easy, and it has many benefits. Your webmaster will only have to set up the widget once and will be less stressed by last minute updates. The swimmers will have accurate, relevant information. The USMS community will have well-connected and informed swimmers. Lastly, but most importantly, you will spend less time in front of your computer and more time doing the things you love.

If you already have a website, Club Assistant can help you add widgets to it. If you need a website, Club Assistant can help you build one.
