Go Swim has a new drill video:

YouTube- Freestyle - Bent Arm Extension

It is aimed at older people who have limited shoulder flexibility (like me!). Reading the text it sounded interesting but when I watch the swimmer I wonder about her stroke. It looks to me like she pulls very wide, and her left arm pull is almost straight for the first half at least, and it doesn't look like she is applying any force in the back half. The right arm has more bend but again it seems very wide. I am curious what others think of the drill and her stroke.

At a recent swim camp the coach suggested that I extend deeper, as deep as necessary so that the arm is comfortably straight, as trying to extend at the surface (given my inflexibility) tended to affect my body position. The video seems to advocate introducing a horizontal bend instead. Have other people considered this issue and come to any conclusions?

Hand slip seems not to get a good finish, I agree.

At times the right arm is pointing away from the body in the pull. Leaving aside execution, not sure what I think in principle. I've become aware that trying to over-extend can result in the hand scooping up in my own stroke, so a more relaxed arm might help. I've actually been trying to enter deeper, as Lindsay, which feels counter-intuitive but seems to have helped my stroke a bit.

I think this is a good alternative for those with shoulder injuries. I've got two couple of young swimmers I coach who use a similar pull pattern, and neither of them are flexible at all.

But did you also see this one?

That is pretty cool!
