I would like to propose the First Annual Forum 50.

The idea originated here: Eat or not before swimming in Early Morning? - Page 4 - U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums

Here are the rules:

Swim an all out 50 for time
Post your time here

That's it. Swim an off 50, swim your best, swim a 50 IM, who cares. It is like a postal swim, except not official for anything, and takes a lot less time.

It's only a 50!

The next time I have access to starting blocks is Friday, so I will do my swim Friday or Monday.

If you got'em, use 'em. (Blocks)

Good luck.

What? And show off how slow some of us are? I like to hide that fact :)

Really guys and girls it was just a silly reason to do an all out effort that was short enough to fit into anyone's current swimming schedule.

It is not about ego, there is no registry of times, there is nothing wrong with swimming an AFAP 50 feet instead of 50M and there is nothing wrong with keeping your times to yourself.

It is just an excuse to swim fast for those who rarely do so.

Okay... I'll bite.....

50 SCY Backstroke from a push (no blocks where I am)
53 year old male with a paunch to haul
end of the day, before dinner, after 2,000 yards...

33.0

Anyone else wanna play? :applaud:

Last timed 50:

50 dolphin kick with a monofin: 20-20.5 from a push

I hope I'm healthy enough to do one from the blocks on Sunday. Very useful practice.

I'll do it tomorrow. :-)

No blocks, though.

Redbird, I wish I could go 33 in 50 back (and I'm 40). Then maybe I wouldn't hate 200 IM so much.

That's pretty cool. I'd love to swim a 50 in under 20 seconds, I don't care what equipment I'm using!

It's soooo fun!!!

I think I might be able to d go under 20 if I didn't have to slow down slightly for the turn and finish to avoid a disabling injury. lol

I went 23 in LCM last summer. No worries about the turn there.

Are you able to actually push off the wall after the turn with the mono-fin on?

Yep, I've gotten pretty adept at doing a regular flip turn with the MF. The push off from the flip isn't as good as the initial push off though.

Was farting around while resting between sets, did a :31 50yd backstroke, scy. This is my best backstroke time to date. I may actually be enticed to swim it in the next meet I enter.

Today was sprint day - the entire practice. At the end of over an hour of swimming, we did some hard 50's all out. From a push off, I did a 33.20 50 y free. Lactic acid was not my friend today.

Pushed 50M free in 31 sec yesterday. I'll try to get under 30 again today, been my goal for a while.

Swam a 50 free from the blocks today, 27 high using the wall clock and self starting at the end of practice.

Coach was busy video taping people, and the blocks are at the wrong end to easy have someone resting time me.

One person made fun of me for "showing off going off the blocks" but he was just joking. He just had hip surgery, so he probably wished he had the option to go off the blocks with me.

Some ridiculously good advice for sprint training was posted recently: U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums - View Single Post - Grinding through a plateau in sprints...

Did about 27 SCY50fr yesterday. Even though I did hesitate on the turn, the first 25 (block dive and breakout) wasn't much quicker than the last 25 - lol (about 13 and 14).

Looking at the vid I need to:

Hit the water more streamlined
Find a better underwater streamline path
Surface earlier with more speed
I should be hitting the 1st wall at 12 seconds with my speed - I can push that without a dive. This makes sense due to my lack of experience though.

The first 50 of my 100 IM today was pretty awesome. I don't have splits yet. The wheels fell off on the second 50 though. I think I took 4 breaststrokes from the flags to the wall...

Steve, I agree with #1 but the way to do that is to be more explosive off the block. Throw your hands forward with the goal of touching the other side of the pool. That will get everything else moving and should help to get you longer off the block.

due to some sort of starting issue, had to get up on the blocks and swim it again right away.

Hey FindingMyInnerFish,

Just get up and do a fast 50, no need to post a time if you don't want to. This is a good excuse to do a fast 50 if the last one you did was 3 years ago.

I did my 50 today. I was timing myself, so this is probably less than accurate. I think my time was somewhere between 34 and 36. Probably could've been a little faster, but I had the lane right next to the water slide. Hmmm, a lot like open water swimming!

Didn't realize that we could use fins. I'll have to time myself with those on Thursday.

If I had a water slide at my pool, we would be doing the fast forum slide races. It is good streamline practice I hear.

Using fins on a 50 sounds pretty fun. I am pretty sure I would get some serious ribbing if I climbed up on the blocks with fins... but that might just be me :)

The times I'm practicing the next couple of weeks, the age groupers will have the blocks. I'll just use the fins off the wall. I'm awkward enough, without climbing onto the blocks with those things!:afraid:

We did five rounds of the Auburn sprint set this morning:

50 from blocks -- 20 fast/30 easy (good breakout)
50 from push -- 30 fast/20 easy (all out into turn, good breakouts)
50 easy recovery
50 from blocks all out

3 and 5 were from the blocks on the last one. I did free/back/free/fly/free, held 23/26/23/26/23 on the last 50 of each set. This set is deceptive, it seems easy initially but if you really throw everything into it, the rounds get progressively harder. It is a good sprint set. I can say that now that it is over ;).

Oh I don't mind posting a time, although reading my time might not be for the faint of heart. :)

I (re)joined a masters swimming group with all faster swimmers (previous coach had work commitment). Plus, I do a running workout with a group that had no member running over 24 mins. in a 5k until I joined it (29something today). I find that it helps to leave the ego at home and just enjoy the benefits of the workouts!

A good principle to apply to my fifty. BTW, is there any deadline on this 50? I never know what the masters' workouts will consist of, but I notice not much emphasis on fast 50s (longer-distance sets with some 50 drill/50 swim alternating--but I've only had a couple workouts w/ this coach... I like her workouts--they seem focused on helping with technique, which I certainly can use). If not in practice, next swim on my own I'll do some 50s and see what develops. And I'll tell you the gory details, ha ha!

50scm butterfly in 30.5 done at last Prov.Championship. (the one in the middle with black suit and bl/white cap)

Probably a few meets away from going under 30. Just the start and turn, there's probably a good 0.25 right there.

That's an improvement of 0.8 compared to 1 month ago, probably due to tapering effect (no shaving).

(got a heck of a speech from my coach because of my legendary slowish starts. I hate to hurry up during the start, not good for a 50)
