Good afternoon,

I just want to get a feel how other LMSC's handle there scheduling of meets. My question is fairly simple.

In the OHIO LMSC we try to schedule meets at least 2 weeks apart, in order to maximize the attendance. It is not written in our by-laws, but kind of an understood unwritten rule. What are other LMSC handling this? Is there something written in your By-laws that dictate the 2 weeks time period?

Hi

In Pacific, we are lucky to have many well run meets that need to be scheduled during the year.

We have divided the year into four seasons
Jan 1- May 31 Short Course Yards
Jun and July Long Course Yards
August and September Open Water
Oct through Dec Short Course Meters

First we schedule the Championships for each of those seasons (usually at the August monthly meeting). Then at the September meeting we schedule the rest of the meets.

Normally we try to do it so that meets that have a history, we schedule them on their "historical" date (the second Saturday in May, the last Saturday in May etc).

We want to schedule events that do not compete with each other on the same weekend (in the past it has been we only schedule only one event a weekend) now we will schedule an Open Water meet in one part of the state on the same date as a pool meet in another part of the state.

We are very fortunate in that we have many members with many meets. We have found that for some events, there is not much cross over (many open water swimmers do not swim at pool meets). We have found that June through September there are more events that want to be put on that weekends to put those events on (yes, this is a rich man's problem and we have been very fortunate).

In my opinion, you need to have successful meets. If the meets are successful, the organizers will do them again. If they are not successful, there is no reason to do them again. If the organizers make money, the organizers will tend to want to do them next year.

You have to be a judge of your own LMSC in what will make sense for you, it could be that you could schedule a open water meet one weekend and a pool meet the next, but if you are drawing from the same group of swimmers, that might not work.

Best of luck in your scheduling. A good schedule can be one of the biggest draws for a building LMSC.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for the information. Your approach to scheduling makes sense. I agree if the meet is successful, either from a monetary or attendance standpoint it is easier to keep it going.

One last question. How do you encourage your teams or contacts to obtain a sanction so early in the year? Our issue is that people wait till the last minute to host a meet then the attendance is low, then people complain about that the fact no one comes to meets.

Any suggestions would be helpful.
