You are very lucky Mike to swim so much ow. I'm in the Chicago area and our outdoor swimming season is so short. If I am lucky I can get into Lake Michigan once every week or two and enter abut 5 OW events not including tris. So I don't do as much OW as I'd like!

Hahahaha. You guys are all lucky. I get zero OW swims EXCEPT in competition. None of the OW in Moscow is clean...this according to the Russian lifeguards here!

I only swim OW in competitions (about 4-5 events per year). There is no convenient open water to where I live.

None, zero, zip. I don't swim or compete open water. Don't like it.

100% of my training is in the pool, but I'm probably going to race 50-50 events between pool and open water. Measured in terms of total minutes racing, my OW racing will be greater than pool racing. I love both.

In season I do at least one OW training swim per week, sometimes two.
I started in May this year, and I'll probably continue with the lake swims into October. The majority of my competitions are triathlons or aquathlons (swim-run). No pure OW swims yet, but that's largely because of scheduling conflicts. I do a few pool meets a year but I much prefer the open water.

training; 30-40% OW (would be more, but this thing called winter gets in the way)

competition; 99.9999999% OW

Dave,

Why don't ya'll just chisle a path through the ice during winter? Then you could swim ow all year.

Competition 110% OW

Training for races 10% to 15 %

When I wasn't racing it was 100% OW as long as I could tolerate the temperatures.

This past summer, and I'm not done yet, about 60 to 70% of my mileage was openwater. However winter probably reduces that percentage to around 20% for the year.

Heh-heh. We thought of that already:

Never done it. I would like to try it at least once, whether in a competition or just training, but I haven't yet been able to motivate myself to do so.

about 30-40% of my training may-jun. 80% jun-aug is OW lake.

it really depends on when my last pool meet is and when my OW season starts. usually my first OW race is in July with my last meet in the beginning of June. but this year my last meet was early aug so I had to swim more in the pool this summer than usual
