View Full Version : The 2003 USMS (Un)Convention

After a few years of excitement at the USMS Conventions, this one sounds like it will be a yawner. At least, judging by the sharp drop this year in convention-related topics discussed in this forum, apathy may have taken over.
Just in case you've forgotten, this year's convention is next week in San Diego.
What may be some of the big issues....
Awarding 2005 Nationals: There's a good chance that both Nationals will stay east of the Mississippi River.
Adding SCM Nationals: It's an emergency proposal engendered by a discussion on this forum.
Restructuring Elections: The elections themselves won't be exciting (except maybe to see who's going to volunteer to be a Zone Rep), but we may see four-year officer terms and the Zone Committee Chair election realigned with the election of the other officers...that is, if the Zone Committee isn't eliminated.
Conflict Resolution: A total rewrite of USMS Rules Part 4 (Athlete rights, hearings and appeals) is up for consideration.

Dan you are really late this year in getting this started. :-)

There were two bids. One from Orlando for both SCY and LCM and one from Irvine (or there abouts)for LCM. If both nationals are held East of the Mississippi that may mean that Orlando would have both SCY and LCM. I dont think it would be a good idea to have LCM four years out of five in the Eastern Time Zone.

Not chance that would pass. It would require a 90% vote to get it pass. In a Rules year, I dont think it would pass at this time. The groundwork has not been laid.

Dont know if four years would pass. How about three years. For anyone running for president that would be an EIGHT year committment. That is a very long time.

I still have to read this one, but have heard it is a big improvement over the current section.
I think the big buzz will be does USMS want to have FINA Masters World Championships and the cash flow before the meet.
Thanks for bringing up the subjects, Frosty.

Well, I think they should give it to Irvine. The sites back east have had it several times already and the teams west of the divide don't particapte as much in the long course because the East Coast gets it almost most of the time. But its there decision.

Our coach just sent us an official announcement email...
We got it!!!! :) :) :) :)
Mission Viejo Nadadores Masters (which you guys are refering to as Irvine here - close enough) *are* hosting the 2005 LCM Nationals !!!
Well, Irvine is a city next door to us, and a home to Irvine Nova's - our big rivals ;) Irvine didn't bid for the Nationals.
Okay, a little shameless plug here... the Power Point presentation our coach showed at the convention, as the part of the bidding process ... I made that... Well, coach and I made it.
He said the presentation was well recieved. Had no glitches showing it. Pheeeew!
I can stop stressing now.
[Connie! Stop jumping up and down too, you'll hurt yourself.]

Congratulations on receiving the 2005 LCM national championships!
Even though Mark indicated there were no problems, I know that there was one, but it did not matter in the long run. On the power point display, all of the color was off, so the grass looked pink. The LCD projector he was using was set for a videotape machine, and had not been reset for the computer presentation. I am surprised that it showed anything at all, but it is my fault that the colors weren't right on the screen that the delegates were looking at. Since there were no competing bids forthcoming, he could have shown it again, but it wasn't necessary.

There is still suspense for the award of the 2005 Short Course Yards nationals.
Since Orlando was unable to present a bid at the convention, the Championship committee has thrown open the bidding process, and there are a few bids that were too late for the original cutoff in July that should be able to make the October deadline. Once the committee makes its review, it will present a recommendation to the Board of Directors (along with the information for all of the candidates), who will decide on the location by email vote.
This is a first for USMS, and you can be proud that you are represented by a dedicated group of hard working (and playing) volunteers, and trust that there will be a well thought out decision (we have to swim there, too).

I only know one name of the four, and in the interest of fairness, I will not recall any if I cannot recall all of them. I would suggest you look in the Championship section of the DGs here, to see if they are revealed, or have rebid.

Ah, you're right, Mark didn't tell me about the color being off.
I did offer to him to come down there that day, and make sure everything was taken care of... I think that may have been his first encounter with an LCD projector, so he probably wouldn't have known what to do, or that anything could be done.
Or, maybe he was too stressed out to notice. I bet he was feeling about the same way I was when I had to climb up on the 10+m diving tower to take photo's and some video's of the facility.
As I'm climbing up, he asks me if I'm afraid of heights... and I'm thiking... 'little late to ask now, so let's not remind me of it' :D and gave him a really unconvincing "no" ;)
