I love to race, and will travel to the nearby LMSC's to do it, so my numbers may be a little high. Last year (Sept. '09-Aug '10) I did 10  meets, 6 SCY, 2 SCM, & 2 LCM. Of all of these meets, only 4 were in my own LMSC. I would have had 11 but I couldn't make it do to the freeway to Oregon closed for severe freezing rain :chillpill::censor: in December. :badday:

I joined USMS, in February, and competed in 6 meets this year:
4SCY (Including Nationals, even though I didn't qualify...)
1LCM
1SCM

My SCM meet was this past Saturday, at Georgia Tech, home of USMS 2010 Nationals. :D Unfortunately, I strained an adductor muscle during a breaststroke sprint off the blocks, so I had a :badday: meet. By the 200 breaststroke, I was :toohurt: and had to scratch. :whiteflag: (Oh well; it hasn't kept me out of the pool! And, I should be back to kicking breaststroke by next week. :bliss:)

Since I began masters swimming in 1998: about 10 total, no more than 3 per year.

For those who do more than 6/year, how do you train through the different training cycles, taper, meet, recover?

I usually do 2-6 timed swims/month as part of workout, 99% of those off the blocks and racing other people on the team.

This is what I do for normal meets. I'll also add that I typically do not swim the day after a meet.

Tapering is more of a fine art. And by that I mean a crapshoot. :bitching:

For me around five per year is pretty typical. Add in two open water swims on average.

Usually 2-4 SCY, 2-3 LCM (both including 1 taper meet) and 0-1 SCM. I take a break for most of mid August thru late September, with pool closures, back to school, etc.

FOURTEEN IN 2010!!

1/15/10 USA
2/5/10 USA
2/27/10 USMS DAMM SCY Republic of TX
3/4/10 USA
4/23/10 USA
5/14/10 USA
5/22/10 USA
6/4/10 USA
6/25/10 USA
10/29/10 USA
11/21/10 USMS DAMM SCM
12/03/10 USA
12/11/10 USMS DAMM Relay meet!
12/16/10 USA

All meets except 2 USA were local meets. I'm not going to travel as much for masters so I try to swim whatever comes along, regardless of what condition I am in. 12/16/10 was the Chesapeake Pro/Am, so now I am taking this week off, next week off, then swim for 2 weeks before my next meet on 1/14/11! And no, I won't really be in shape for that.

To address aztimm's question, the short answer is I don't taper/train/periodize for meets. I probably won't for the next several years. My MO is to simply enter every local A meet that comes along and swim anywhere from just one to (recently) several events per meet. I rely a lot on simply "getting up" and "delivering" when the more competitive meets come along. Racing alot gives me that confidence and "racing shape".

In 2010 I went to 9 meets: 3 SCY, 2 LCM, 4 SCM. Two of the meets were USA-S meets. There were 4 taper meets in the mix, two in SCY, one each in SCM and LCM. There was also one OW race in there.

My sweet spot is probably about 8 pool meets per year and 2 OW races. This works out to roughly one meet or race per month, taking January and September off. I need meets/races to keep me motivated, but of course need to balance family with that.

One-day races/meets that are drivable and don't require an overnight stay are great in that respect. We have several of those around here.

For those who do more than 6/year, how do you train through the different training cycles, taper, meet, recover?

I like having 3-4 taper meets a year, spaced 3-4 months apart. That gives 2-3 months of training followed by a 3-week taper. When I was young and stupid, I was definitely of the school of thought of one, maybe two taper meets per year. But now I find I need more frequent tapers to ensure I don't over-train.

I don't usually rest much for in-season meets, but I find they are a useful gauge of accumulated training fatigue.

Oh, and FWIW, only two taper meets per year - one SCY (usually Nationals) and one LCM (occasionally Nationals).

I don't travel well, so no more meets East of the Mississippi for me.

And I don't train enough to taper more than once per season... [insert fat emoticon here].

well... your post deserves more words:applaud:
I am addicted to my daily swim practice, have been a Master for almost 15 years and never had more than 3 days off. Competing is just a consequence without much thought on the quality of practice to improve times (though I love to get TOP10...)
Have always done my practice alone but I am lazy, only like to do aerobic workouts; to do the intense tasks have to get audience - meets:blush:
Love to travel, no family nor stressful working responsibilities ; since 1999 decided to combine the travelling with social part and intense workouts. Have done almost all Europeans nationals.Had for some short periods of time been affiliated to Portuguese, Spanish, UK, German Master federations to know the system...
Basically I am a adventurous "free" person and decided to be " adventurous" through Master swimming :)

Let's see, I did 11, I believe. One was SC Nationals, one was Zones and 2 were age group meets. I only taper for Nationals. And I always drink my protein after I'm done with a meet and try to get in the pool for a workout the day after a meet to "work the kinks out." Makes me feel so much better.

Should I taper for the state meet & then nationals .

Depends on how you want to do, how your body responds and how you feel.

Personally I swim just as well not tapering if the meet is 1 or 2 days. If it's a longer meet, like Nationals, my body does better with a taper. I do not recommend doing what I did in Nov. I swam in a practice from 7-9, sitting out a lot of the practice but still swam 2800. Then drove to the meet pool, which was 10 min away and raced 200, 500 and 1000 in about an hour. Needless to say it was not a good meet for me.

Should I taper for the state meet & then nationals .

It depends on your goals, but if you want, give it a go.Several times in SCM I have had 2 meets I wanted to swim fast at.With 2 tapers I sometimes could swim well at both, but usually one suffers.

Illinois state meet is april 7 -10 & Nationals are the 3rd week of april. I think that I will lay off a few days after the state meet , build up for 10 days & then taper.

I'm new to competitive swimming and have only been on a masters team for 16 months. Since I'm old and never swam in meets before I've been averaging 2 per month "in season". I had to get meet experience with starts, turns, pacing, etc. Still just a novice. In 2010 I did 14 meets (11 in ILL, 3 in WI). I didn't really taper much except for the state meets and the Senior Olympics. I plan to swim 2/month from Jan-May with the National Senior Games in Houston in June. I'll taper on the drive down & hope to finish in the top ten in all my 6 events there.

Back to the original question.
In 2010 I did 12 - - 7 LCM, 4 SCM and only 1 SCY.
Only one in the US, another one in Sweeden (Worlds Champs.) and all the others in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, etc...).
And yes, I do miss the technical suits. A lot. I competed more this year just trying to adapt to the old way of swimming. I am still quite behind my best results...

I only started in July, but I swam 3 this year. Hoped to do more, but it turns out swimming and coaching little league conflict often. Looking at the schedules, I should manage at least 8 this year, assuming the second half of the year is similar to last.

I generally swim 1 meet per month with a few 2 per month.

Most of mine are local USA meets, only 4 are usually masters meets since I have to drive and stay in a hotel for most of those.

When I swim with the kids if it is a 2 day meet and I am swimming with the seniors I can usually get my warmups and warmdowns in. If it is a one day short meet (pick 3 format) I tend to just swim and not really try and swim fast. It is more about showing the kids I coach that your never too old to swim and that YES coach can actually swim and beat some of them.

2 that can leave me in the dust and about 4 that are starting to creap into my time ranges now. Should be an interesting year.

I've done up to 7 meets a year, when I first started masters actually.

I've settled on one-two meets and one open water swim a year for varying reasons, partly that I don't want to spend my free time driving long distances, partly that some local meets are no longer held, etc.

It's interesting with kids when they are developing so quickly, one year you are beating them easily and then they zoom past you. I remember at one meet I swam next to a kid on our team -- maybe 15yo -- in the 200 back and I edged him out at the end. I turned to him and said that I had to get my last licks in because I wouldn't be able to touch him in another year. (I was right, he crushes me now.)
