Ledecky was just amazing. She will probably break the 1500 WR.

Good job for Jones. Jones and Gabby deserve a day at Oprah's Monticello compound. "CuuuUULLLLen JJJJJOnnnnessss!"

Also, Franklin is Madam Backstroke!

Wow! That means Janet Evans is now off the American Record books. This was the last to go down of those great records.

i put her 50 splits for the 800 into the attached spreadsheet (acutally developed this spreadsheet for 1650 splits and tweaked it for the 800 - don't pay attention to the splits/analysis beyond 800). Her splits for 100-200-400-500 are shown, and at the bottom of these colums the average splits for each distance are shown in blue. Her cumualtive times and the variances from average are on the right side of the spreadsheet with spits under average in black and the splits above average in red. She didn't back end this race at all and took the first 250 out faster than average, then dropped off her average pace for the balance of the race until the final 50m.

That is surprising. Some people like to broadcast what they are doing in the interwebs, and depending on the time they do, it might coincide with something you might be interested in watching. :2cents:

Wow. I counted 3 kicks before the arms were engaged and then another kick during the pulldown. They basically start dolphin kicking before they hit the water. Interesting interpretation of the rule.

Gotta love the interpretation that being allowed to do one during the arm pull=not placing a limit on how many BEFORE the arm pull.

*sigh* and so what goes around comes around. There is the harm done to the sport when doping happens. Then there is another kind of harm where every amazing swim falls under suspicion. The two are connected, but we could also just assume innocence (whether of a Chinese swimmer or an American one) until proven guilty.

This is why cheating is such a pernicious thing - it eats away at everyone's trust and casts a shadow even over the people who play by the rules.

A lot of it probably has to do with the enormous financial incentives to win and the whole business mentality around sports.

(And we've seen a wee bit of cheating in the business/financial world as well recently, if I recall correctly - not to open one of these: :worms:)

I thought you had to turn 16 sometime during the Olympic year to be able to compete. I know that's the rule in some sports such as gymnastics and figure skating. Apparently swimming is exempt from the rule since they mentioned Ledecky turned 15 in March.

FINA has no minimum age for pool swimming at the elite international level- Dana Vollmer (Goodwill Games) and Elizabeth Beisel (Pan Pacs) were both on international teams at 13, and Mark Schubert was reportedly trying to get Missy's camp to more her to the senior level in 2009 because he thought she could qualify for the 4x200 world championships relay pool at 14.

FINA does have minimum ages for open competition in their events for these sports:

Open water- 14
Diving- 14 by December 31st in the year of competition
Synchro- 15

I didn't find a minimum age listed for senior level water polo listed in FINA's general rulebooks, but given the sport's brutality, I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like 16.

Frank Thompson

Swimming has always had a history of young swimmers in the Olympics and it goes back many years. The youngest male Olympic Champion was Kusuo Kitamura from Japan at 14 with his win in the 1500 Free at the 1932 Olympics. I believe Michael Phelps, at 15, was the youngest male to make an Olympic team at 15.

Aileen Riggin Soule, a former USMS masters swimmer was 14 years old when she made her first appearance at the 1920 Olympics in Diving and returned to the 1924 Olympics in both Diving and Swimming and was the first athlete to compete in two different aquatic sports at the same Olympiad.

Eleanor Holm's Olympic career began in 1928, when she was 15 years old and placed 5th in the 100 Back. Donna De Varona, at 13 years old, is the youngest person ever to qualify for an Olympic team and that was accomplished in 1960. Lillian "Pokey" Watson is the youngest USA Olympic competitor to medal at 14 and that was accomplished in the 1964 Olympics.

These are just some examples and I am sure there are plenty of others out there and with this history, I don't believe it will change. The other sports mentioned like Diving and Water Polo are kind of dangerous for young kids compared to swimming when you get to that international elite level. Gymnastics is different and I don't know that much about the sport to comment. Perhaps they don't want to push kids at that early of an age even if they are real good and can handle it. Also besides the physical pressure is the mental pressure and maybe this is why they have an age requirement.

Shane Gould, many years ago wanted FINA and the IOC to set an age limit for swimmers in the Olympics and I believe it was either 16 or 17 years old. Her theory at the time was that the mental pressure more than the physical pressure is just to great for young swimmers and it might effect them more if they fail in their goals for there future in the sport. I am not sure if she was talking about herself because she retired early and would not have if they had this age limit. With her 5 total medals (3 gold) at the 1972 Olympics at 15 didn't matter. I don't think that FINA and IOC thought about this and nothing was ever said again about it.

Woohoo!!! So proud of Team USA in the relays. Amazing races. :bliss:
Question though: Why is the order in the medley relays different from the order in the individual medleys? Is it just tradition/history, or is there a particular reason for this?

He is the only guy to go under 14:40 without an Olympic gold medal. I liked how he was able to hold off Ous. I was kind of hoping that Cochrane would give Sun a fight. However, Sun is just so incredible. The Aussie didn't have a swimmer in this event but, Aussie distance coaching won the gold.

Now 17 Americans have won swimming gold so far and there is a very good chance to add at least 5 more (men’s 400 MR) and maybe 4 more in the women’s relay.

Nathan Adrian, Alyssa Anderson, Ricky Berens, Tyler Clary, Conor Dwyer, Missy Franklin(2), Matthew Grevers, Charlie Houchin, Ryan Lochte(2), Matthew McLean, Lauren Perdue, Michael Phelps (2), Allison Schmitt (2), Rebecca Soni, Davis Tarwater, Dana Vollmer (2), Shannon Vreeland

27 Americans won swimming gold medals and with the 9 Rob predicted in the relays plus Katie Ledecky's win in the 800 makes 27 total swimmers and that is third behind the 1984 and 1996 Olympic teams. The total number of of gold medals collected by the 27 was 41. This team might have been stronger individually than the others but had 2 relays that did not win gold and that can sometimes add 5 to 7 swimmers to the mix per relay.

Nathan Adrian (2), Alyssa Anderson, Ricky Berens, Rachel Bootsma, Tyler Clary, Clare Donahue, Conor Dwyer, Missy Franklin(4), Matthew Grevers (2), Jessica Hardy, Charlie Houchin, Cullen Jones, Katie Ledecky, Breeja Larsen, Ryan Lochte(2), Tyler McGill, Matthew McLean, Lauren Perdue, Michael Phelps (4), Allison Schmitt (3), Eric Shanteau, Rebecca Soni (2), Davis Tarwater, Nick Thoman, Dana Vollmer (3), Shannon Vreeland

1984 - 12 Women - 24 Gold Medals. 18 Men - 26 Gold Medals 30 S 50 Golds
1996 - 15 Women - 24 Gold Medals. 16 Men - 22 Gold Medals 31 S 46 Golds
2012 - 12 Women - 20 Gold Medals. 15 Men - 21 Gold Medals 27 S 41 Golds

Question, the British backstroke did some side SDK action off of his walls. I know that it was legal off your freestyle walls. I didn't know it was legal off of backstroke walls.

USA Men medal count might drop in the future with more and more male college programs being dropped. Of course, Michael Phelps didn't become successful from a college program. Do we really want to see US Men's Team going to the Olympics with their passport and AARP card? Most age group swimmers get serious about swimming in high school with the thought of a college scholarship. People who run USA Swimming should have a policy or solution for this.

Finally, FINA Masters needs to have World Masters Champs or Worlds Masters Invitational after the Rio Games in the facility that they build.

Sun Yang didn't false start. In the video you posted, did the starter ask the swimmers to stand up and step back after issuing the "take your marks" command?

Here's a report that describes what happened to Sun Yang's slip:

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/olympics/ryan-cochrane-gets-a-second-chance-and-grabs-an-olympic/article_7ca824c0-9c50-571b-aa8c-8279e625b036.html

Cochrane would not lose this opportunity. He would not be distracted by another near false start. Sun leapt into the pool early and alone Saturday night, surfacing with a confused look on his face.

"At that moment, I was so scared," Sun said through a translator. "And it was all black before my eyes."

But Sun was not disqualified because he did not actually false start. The swimmers were told to take their marks and then to step down, because the crowd was too loud. Sun heard the second command and took off. He didn't leave before the start signal because there was no start signal yet.

Sun was upset when the officials pushed the swimmers back on the blocks quickly, making a couple of timeout signals with his hands. The other swimmers felt rushed, too.

I am loving Olympic Swimming & Team USA. today was Day 7 & tomorrow is Day 8, the last day of Olympic swimming.

I hope that team USA will continue training & tapering for another week. I hope that soon there will be a special elite invite meet or time trial for Olympians & swimmers who are ranked top 25, 30, or 40 in the USA for 2012, or heck, just do it in practice next week.

I'd like it to be a 1 or 2 day competition where swimmers race 1 or 2 events, no prelim / semi finals / finals, just evening sessions, if swimmers race 2 events,
they get at least an hr rest between swims

I'd love to see:

Lochte & Phelps race the 200 IM under ideal conditions
Both fresh rested & ready

Ledecky race the 1500 & 400

Franklin 1 & 2 bk

Vollmer 1 FL

Soni 2 Br

Grevers, Adrian, Jones, & Phelps race the 4 x 1 fr relay to find out if this killer combo could beat Frances winning time

Plus a 50 M SDK race
SDK = Streamline Dolphin Kick

Who else?
What else?

Just a no pressure fun chance to swim faster, entertain a crowd, & American & world viewers who love swimming & are proud of our Olympic swimmers.

Would you watch?

I think the U.S. team put to rest the notion that Trials were too close to the Olympics. It seems like nearly everyone swam faster in London than they did in Omaha. Really great team effort by the both the U.S. men and women!

Me too. I just hope FINA goes with a video review and doesn't decide that dolphin kicking should be allowed for 15 meters. Then just about every event would be dominated by the best SDKers and not necessarily who swims the stroke the best...

Heck yes I'd watch!!!! This would be similar to the tour the Olympic gymnasts take after the Olympics. The gymnasts do watered-down routines with added techno features, in duets, or with fancy costumes and props and entertain the crowds. If I remember correctly the gymnastics tour had some gymnasts from other countries mixed in. Why not take advantage of the hero status they've attained during their week of glory and possibly make a little cash too!

Hey James! I stayed off this thread to avoid spoilers. After Cullen's race on Friday night (I watched the tape delay on TV), I hit the sack to get some good sleep before Dixie Zone Championships, in Greenville. I just got back this evening and I'm getting caught up...

Cullen rocked the semis! That was an amazing tie with Cielo. And, I was happy to see him BEAT Cielo for the silver. But, as I posted on the "Black Swimmers" thread, I was ticked off :bitching: at NBC for doing a big story on Cielo before the race. Then, what REALLY ticked me off was talking about Ervin, but not Jones. All they said about Cullen was that he was "the OTHER American..." So, what did "the other American" do? He BEAT Cielo and BEAT Ervin and won silver.

:chug: Here's to Cullen Jones, a class act, AWESOME swimmer, and great guy. :cheerleader: And, yes, James, he gets a :smooch: from me next time if he lets me! http://elaineiakstravels.wordpress.com/2012/07/01/congratulations-to-cullen-jones/

I think the U.S. team put to rest the notion that Trials were too close to the Olympics. It seems like nearly everyone swam faster in London than they did in Omaha. Really great team effort by the both the U.S. men and women!

I think it's good to have trials close to the Olympics. It gives us the best chances of sending our best swimmers at the time. If Trials were held 6 months before the games, probably 90% of our Olympians would have been the same. There'd be some jostling among luck-of-the-touch or luck-of the-taper type races.

It would've been sad if Katie Ledecky hadn't made it.

It looks like it really worked this year.Lochte was about the only one who didn't look like he hit his taper(except Phelps in the 400 IM also).
Whatever the Aussies did was certainly not the way to go.They were really fast at their trials and then got no individual Gold.

There are two other reasons why the Olympic Trials will stay where they are.

1. They do not conflict with the NCAA College season. This was a major conflict back in 1992 and they have not been held in March since.

2. NBC likes having the contracts to televise these events and this year they had all of the trials going in a two week period and it was great for ratings because they can capture different fans across the different sports. The Diving, Swimming, Track & Field, and Gymnastics all were going on in a two week window for prime time TV.

So much for cheaters never prosper.

If not for underwater cameras, dolphin kicks at the entry are probably very difficult for an official to catch due to all the surface turbulence.

I don't know what should be done about the cheating after the fact.If he hadn't admitted he cheated I think everyone would agree there is nothing that could be done retrospectively. He did admit it.Is the admission more heinous than the deed,or did he help by making the problem public.
I'd say I hope FINA does something, but given their history I hope they surprise me by doing something logical that helps the sport.
First there was the problem that doing a dolphin kick during the pulldown looked like "natural undulation." so they made a dolphin kick there legal.I didn't like it,but it had some logic. No sooner had the ink dried on the rules before people were pushing the envelope by taking the kick before the pulldown.FINA could have ended much of this non-sense by defining the pulldown in a logical way and letting it be known that violations would be called.Instead they came up with a definition of a pull that defied logic(move your hands apart, pause, now pull-come on.)By taking a wishy-washy stand they are saying"keep pushing and we'll keep making allowances." They need to rewrite the pullout rules so they make sense and then show some courage and DQ some stars when they "push the envelope."

Someone at College Swimming.com ran the numbers and more than 70% of the American team improved or effectively held (ie. less than a tenth difference) their times from Trials, which no other team that we know of seemed able to do.

Why not do all the dolphin kicks you can :D during a SLOW pull out ???

You can do all of the dolphin kicks you'd like--just sign up for any of the freestyle/butterfly/backstroke (on back) events. As long as you surface by the 15m mark there's absolutely nothing wrong.

This is breaststroke--not butterfly. They really need to totally eliminate the fly and get back to real breaststroke. We're only talking about 3 events: the 50/100/200 breaststroke.

You know, I agree - but is that only because I'm a breaststroker and not great at SDK? Do any backstrokers or freestylers out there think that 15 meters of dolphin kicking underwater has diluted their stroke at all (making true masters of free or back swimming less successful and those who SDK well more)?

I've also wondered if Phelps would dominate as many strokes as he does without the his SDKs. Thoughts?

You know, I agree - but is that only because I'm a breaststroker and not great at SDK? Do any backstrokers or freestylers out there think that 15 meters of dolphin kicking underwater has diluted their stroke at all (making true masters of free or back swimming less successful and those who SDK well more)?

I've also wondered if Phelps would dominate as many strokes as he does without the his SDKs. Thoughts?

Long course swimming isn't affected by SDK's nearly as much as short course. I consider my SDK's above average; swimming long course is humbling since they're not particularly helpful.

Phelps got 6 gold and 2 bronze in Athens without his SDK's.

Good points. Hadn't remembered no SDK's in Athens for Phelps, either...

I do the dolphin kick at the finish of my pulldown in breaststroke, but only since the rule took affect. I also find it hard to continue with the dolphin kick in the pullout during my IMs, especially the 400 IM.

I'm content with removing the dolphin kick pullout rule from the books. I had strong pullouts before the rule anyway. :)

How about backstrokers doing a big dolphin at the end of the race to get to the wall? Is that legal or only at the start of the back race?

It is legal as long as they don't completely submerge. I've definitely seen DQs on this. (Honestly, I thought Missy Franklin was pushing it a little at the end of her 100 back gold medal swim.)

You can do whatever you want in backstroke as long as you're on your back and surface (and stay surfaced) past the 15 meter mark. You could do double-arm stroke with a frog kick if you wanted. Perfectly legal.

Looks like there is still some swimming happening as part of the Modern Pentathlon (http://www.london2012.com/modern-pentathlon/). There was an Olympic record for the swim leg set today (1:55.70) by Amro El Geziry of Egypt. The women swim tomorrow.

Competition format:

Fencing: Athletes compete against all others, using the epée. The first athlete to score a hit wins the bout. If neither scores within one minute, both athletes register a defeat. An athlete scores 1,000 points for winning 70 per cent of his/her bouts. Each win above or below the 70 per cent mark scores +/- 24 points.

Swimming: Athletes are seeded into heats dependent on their personal best times over the previous 12 months. A time of 2:30 for the 200m freestyle race scores 1,000 points. Each 0.33 seconds above or below this time scores +/-four points.

Riding: Athletes start with 1,200 points. They lose 20 points for each jump they knock down, 40 points for a refusal to jump or disobedience, and 60 points for a fall. They lose four points for each second they are over the allotted time (which is determined by the course size). If an athlete takes twice the allowed time, his/her participation in the event is terminated.

Combined event: The athlete with the most points from the previous events starts first. Athletes after that start in order at handicapped time intervals of one second for every four points. They must run to the shooting range, hit five targets in a 70s time period, followed by a 1,000m run; three times over.

The first athlete to cross the finish line in the combined event is the winner of the gold medal.

Swimming almost every day of the games! :woot:

Well, isn't all her Grand Prix money, World Champs, Cup and Olympic money in a trust til she turns pro? I remember hearing a while back that Brendan Hansen got World Champ money from the previous year when he turned pro in 2004.

I say do it or the gymnasts girls will get all the endorsements. She could pay for college on her own and focus getting more Olympic hardware. Some analysts predicted 2 to 5 million. I am sure that she can get a cosmetic endorsements which would be big money.

I think giving up million of dollars just to swim in college is a little absurd, too. With these things you need to strike when the iron is hot and it's sizzling right now.

My wife told me last week she read a story that said Michael Phelps could make $100 million in endorsements over his lifetime. We're not talking about earning a nice living for a couple years. This is the kind of money where you'd never have to think about working for the rest of your life.

I hope she turns pro. The career of a pro swimmer can end at any moment. It looks like she has a long career ahead of her but she may only have 4 or 8 years where she can make the kind of money she could make now. There is also probably a narrow window around the Olympics for the best sponsorship deals.

+1. Missy has expressed her reasons for wanting to swim in college and I understand her need and desire to be part of a team. But, if she turns pro, she will still have that aspect of swimming to enjoy. She even said herself how great the atmosphere was when Team USA trained together after trials. I would think that positive atmosphere would carry over into the future, as well; especially since she has great relationships already established with her pro teammates.

If she turns pro, not only would she be set for life; her parents would be, as well. How nice of a payback would that be for all they did to get her to where she is now? They don't expect it and only want her to do what would make her happy, but I'll bet she is just as happy of a person as a pro as she would be a collegiate swimmer. With her maturity, intelligence, level head, talent, personality, and beauty, I can't imagine her being unhappy no matter what she chooses to do! She could always go to college later and study whatever her heart desires.

I hope she goes for it! :cheerleader:

Of course it doesn't amount to a hill of beans, but Ervin may have had the fastest swim portion of the race to still come in at 21.78, 0.44 seconds behind Manaudou, after what looks like being a meter or more behind from the start.

Yes, Cullen Jones has the greatest starts, ever, but he makes Ervin look like a light weight.

I'm curious if hejust had a lousy start, or if his starts aren't that great (relatively). Reaction times would be nice to see, but hands entering wrong can easily rob a few tenths too.

Cullen is great, not sure he's the greatest ever.

in the early 90's Steve Crocker used to have RT's under 0.60

Vlad Morozov has fast RTs
he was 0.56 in his 50 Fr in 2010 JRs when he went 22.2 LCM (http://omegatiming.com/File/Download?id=00010A0C0035000000FFFFFFFFFFFF01)

Roland Schoeman gets off the blocks very fast, is a great jumper, & often leads at 15 meters.

It's a bit hard to read because she's still so young and has been through such hard times. Two of her coaches have quit amidst controversy, she has struggled for years with a serious eating disorder, her family's house was destroyed in the 2010 ND flood. She has moved all over the country, living alone at age 19 in apartments in Fullerton, CA etc. IMO, her decision to abandon Auburn and turn pro is where the serious trouble started. It sounds like she has desperately needed someone to give her good advice over the past couple of years but due to a combination of inattention, too much change and bad luck, she's just been floundering.

She's a talent on the order of Beisel or Pelton. She has the basically unlimited potential. I hope she figures out the direction she wants her life to take. That may or may not include swimming.
