Would anyone like to share goals for 2011 too? My bucket swims this season include the Boston Light Swim (August) and the Great Chesapeake Bay Bridge Swim (June)... might try swimming the ASA Lake Travis Relay (October) as a solo...

The new season is nearly upon us, and I imagine we do have a few southern hemisphere visitors to this board.

Where and when does your 2011 season kick off?

I am waiting to see the date and details set for Rice Women's Twin Lakes Open Water Festival - mid- to late April, and definitely the Cap 2k sponsored by Sandy and Keith Bell and their American Swimming Association at Lady Bird Lake, Austin, TX.

Looks like the USMS 25K Champs will be my first this season in Noblesville, IN in June. Trying to get a 3x5K or 4x5K relay together with some of my teammates.

wow - Noblesville, IN's 25K is off my radar screen for the near term.

I am hoping to make my way to Mallory Mead's Lake Maxinkuckee, Indiana swim this year - Swim for Kids' Sake

The 2011 event appears set for August 27, 2011

I'm excited for the OWS to begin. Am soooo over winter.

My first swim for 2011 will be a swim in Sydney my hometown (Australia) - the sydney harbour swim http://www.sydneyharbourswim.com/

And then back to Japan (where I am based) for some OWS throughout the summer.
I will be using the OWS events as good training for a swimtrek holiday this year which I have booked for later on in the summer. http://www.swimtrek.com/

Alei - seems like plenty of open water swims in Australia. Of course, treking from new south wales to queensland to south australia to victoria to northern territory to western australia is a major undertaking.

it does seem you don't have to venture from the greater sydney metropolis to keep busy.

best of luck - I'm certain most of us posters do want to complete an open water in Australia.

Interest in the 25K is growing rapidly... The solo field is more than 25% full with nearly 4 months until race day. Early bird (discounted) registration ends in 2 months on April 23rd. Don't get shut out by delaying your entry.

I am debating on the Cap 2K in Austin. It is right up the road. Just not sure if I will be ready for 2K that early (it is downhill though :)). After that I am doing a quick 500M in a tri relay in the Woodlands. Then June 18 I am in the Caymans for the Flowers Sea Swim. That is my total season, unless I can convince the Irish to let me participate in the Liffey Swim in September (I will be in Ireland then) without having swam the prerequisite number of season races.

I've been swimming at Ala Moana beach since January. In April, I'll head to Kona, do a Total Immersion open water camp, then hopefully swim the swim portion of the Kona Ironman course. Later in the summer, a couple of Alcatraz races.

its a swim that has been on my mind for a long time. rondi has been a great help assisting with the planning... tide modeling etc. we have a grad student working on the tide prediction / swim modeling as part of her thesis project... again, rondi made that connection... and put together the website too!

i know you have a busy year planned, but after MIMS i hope you will be hooked on NY open water possibilities and might consider the 8 bridges some time in the future!

This swim really captures the imagination -- as all great open water swims should.

I'd imagine the tide modeling could inspire at least a thesis or two. I can't wait to read about the logistics of such an undertaking. Will you camp under each bridge? Will the swimmers go at their own pace or will Rondi wear ankle weights? :bolt:

I look forward to hearing more as things develop.

yes, we will swim at our own paces... this requires 2 different models and i may have to start earlier than rondi on a couple of stages.... or rondi can wear ankle weights and a drag chute.

guest stage swimmers will be required to swim with one of us as support will be limited.

This looks like a phenomenal swim. I am sorry I won't be able to make it this year. Unfortunately I'll be in Santa Barbara for racing & training. Moreover, my family & I have already planned our trip east for 7/14 to 7/20. Best of luck.

Due to family vacation, doesn't look like my season will start till late August with the Swim Hellespont event (http://www.swimhellespont.com/ ). Unless I can get the Russian Swimming Fed to answer my emails. Then I'll do a swim earlier in the year in Moscow and then one after Turkey over in the Black Sea.

Any OW discussion where Chaos chimes in instantly makes me feel wholly inadequate, given his super-human OW status.

My plans this year are the Chesapeake Bay swim in June and, hopefully, the 2 mile swim at the Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad at Lake Lure, NC in late August. OW swims seem to pop up at random more than pool meets so I am hopeful to find some more this season. There is also a 5K in Pinehurst, NC in June and the one mile southern zone championship in July which I might attend.

Fortunately, I have ready access at all times to a lake and an escort kayak so I will probably do a half dozen or so solo swims at Lake Wateree, SC.

I have thought about showing up at gull's door randomly some time and making him take me to Barton Springs, mostly because I can't stand the thought that he goes there frequently and I've never been and I hear it is nirvana.

Agreed, but my super-wimpy short OW-race focused season will make you feel manly again:

Fran Crippen Mile (http://www.active.com/triathlon/fort-myers-beach-florida-fl/the-crippen-sunset-mile-open-water-swim-2011)

I'm signed up because until last week I was planning (e.g., flights paid for!) to be in Fort Meyers for my eldest daughter to swim the USAS 5K National Champs, then this came out ... http://www.usaswimming.org/ViewNewsArticle.aspx?TabId=1403&itemid=3292&mid=4631 ... so I'm not sure where I'll be or if the USAS 5K champs will even be that same weekend

La Jolla Rough Water (www.ljrws.com (http://www.ljrws.com)), Sept 11th, will do 1 mile
3 swims in the fall portion of the Arizona Open Water series (http://www.dcbadventures.com/Events/Swimming), will do the 2K option

I am hoping to find some open water swim somewhere in late July/August wherever my family goes on vacation.

How hot is the water in Ft. Meyers? I've done three swims in 88+ water, uncomfortable and nasty for sure.

How hot is the water in Ft. Meyers?I'm not entirely sure, but a friend of mine said mid-80s likely. I'm in total support of USA Swimming taking water temperatures and safety seriously, but they've known about the likely temps in Fort Meyers for a long time and have done races there before. I just wish -- especially in this era of higher plane fares -- they would've made the change of location decision much earlier.

If there ends up being an issue with the OW event not happening that weekend in Ft. Myers and you already have flights, there is a large LCM meet in Sarasota that weekend. It's just a 2 hour or so drive north.

the best time to drop in gull would be oct-nov when there are a bunch of OW events going on around the austin area... and the water has cooled to the mid-low 70's:
http://amswimassoc.com/events.html

i'm trying to put something together for 1st week in nov. in lake travis that will require some crew, kayakers, and maybe a few pace swimmers.

there seems to be so many events that are under the radar whether USMS, ASA, USAT and USASwimming

does anyone know of an open water event in Delaware

Barton Springs IS Nirvana! It's the only place I've ever gotten out of bed early enough to swim at while it's still dark. If you're in luck you'll get a sighting of Cheeks while you're there.

While Chaos's swims really are epic, I plan to make my regular swims SEEM epic this year :)

Amanda,

You will love Nubble if you make it to Maine in July. Last year was the inaugural event and the conditions were will - 3 to 5 foot swells, fog, and 48 degrees in the gut by the lighthouse. It was great - very inspiring swimming through the gut.
