View Full Version : Guess Nationals Attendance

OK, entries close tomorrow for Nationals in Mesa. Let's have a game to guess the attendance. Paul Smith mentioned a few days ago that entries had just gone over the 1,000 mark.

I'll guess 1,869.

It will probably be less than last year since it is on the left side of the US.

I'm going with 1556...that' way I'll be .45 closer than That Guy in case it is higher!
If it's lower... :applaud: ... we all get to swim our 6th events! I hope we get to anyway. I hate traveling a long way and not swimming the maximum available.

Unless attendance is > 2,000 I'd say our sixth events are probably safe. Sixth events hardly ever get cut at the short course meet. Also they will be running 18 lanes rather than the standard 16, so that will move things along even faster.

If the number of entries is not an integer, then I claim victory since no one else thought of it! :bliss:

OK, since I started the thread I'll agree to this. If the number of entries ends up being negative, irrational, or imaginary you will also be declared the winner. Sound good?

Sound good?Well, I'll give That Guy his out right here because I'm pretty sure me entering the 50 free and 50 fly was irrational; assuming the 6th event is nixed, you can count me as 0.6 of a swimmer, then!

3/5 is hardly irrational. Besides, if someone overzealously entered as 1.4 swimmers then you two would cancel out. We will have to wait and see what the final answer is.

Forget the total swimmer count, easier to just count the nerds. Right now that stands at a solid 4, or 3.6 (for you pwb).

3/5 is hardly irrational. I was thinking less of the mathematical definition than the 'normal person' definition: "
without or deprived of normal mental clarity or sound judgment."

1920

I am banking on the success of the other two meets in the general area. Tempe had 1912 in 1994 and 1922 in 2003. I realize the figure that was quoted the other day would seem to be rather low but in my experience a lot of people procrastinate and enter in the last few days before the deadline. I wonder how many people will enter in the next 16 hours or so.

Yes, relay swimmers have the same entry deadline as everyone else.

Well, it's a wrap! Entries are now closed. I suspect we'll hear the final tally in a couple days. Personally I'd be very surprised if the total is less than 1,500. There's always a big surge in entries the final day or two.

As with most PNA meets...speaking of which...Kirk, are you ever going to get entered into the PNA Champs??? Or are you waiting to see if you can be the last online entry into the meet??? :bed:

i'd love to be back in the states during one of the nationals. I can't seem to put my head around how big of a meet it is.

we just had our swedish nationals. 4 sessions friday afternoon through sunday morning. 34 events including 6 relays (2 of which are mixed). so only 14 individual events for each sex.

we had 563 swimmers (not including relays only swimmers) and 2143 starts. the US nationals looks like it will have almost as many people as we had starts... WOW

but we did have two WRs. SCM

Lars Frölander 35-39 50m fly 23.72 (that was an amazing race to see live)
Marika Johanssons 45-49 50m fr 26.96

I just got the first nationals email newsletter and they claim "over 1800."

I'm a little worried about this ominous statement, "We are currently sorting out the problem entries."

Let the conspiracy theories start ...

Paul & Laura are rigging the meet in Arizona's favor,
Sandbaggers are being identified and public humiliation is being prepared,
My entries in all events under 200 yards are being rejected for sheer lunacy,
Fortress is being added to the meet and purposefully put in the worst of the 4 outside lanes

No conspiracy theories necessary. The problem entries are the fractions. You know, like if something crazy happened like Jazz Hands in the 1650. Wait, that actually happened... um... ok how about Paul Smith in the 1000? No... that happened too... ummmm... I guess this means that Jeff Commings entered the 200 fly and crashed the server!

Based on "a little over 1,800" my guess is it's between tjrpatt (1803) and awoods (1812). Speedo may still be in the running with his 1853.

I admit it: I was a problem entry.

My team affiliation was not correct. Got the e-mail from T. Grilli and now it's all fixed. Although it is looking about 80% that I will not be in attendance anyway!

I have a right deltoid that is not very happy right now. I can't even streamline, let alone swim anything but breaststroke.

Also, we are set to move to a 5-acre ranch on Wed, April 27th and we need to be out of our house, completely, by Friday.

What I thought was going to be a perfect Nationals: my events are just where I like 'em, and I have Spring Break leading up to Nationals, has turned out to be a perfect storm!

if you look at his results on line, it's kind of obvious that he signed up for the wrong event or gave the wrong time, because 10:49 is more in line with his 500 timeback in 2007
