Okay, so this is a game I've played before, but not with swimmers. It was the major characters from the tv show LOST.

It's a very democratic game that centers around the giving and taking away of points.

For examples' sake, let's say we have five swimmers:

Dara Torres
Michael Phelps
Rowdy Gaines
Mark Spitz
Mary T. Meagher

Now, let's give each one 10 points.

Dara Torres - 10
Michael Phelps - 10
Rowdy Gaines - 10
Mark Spitz - 10
Mary T. Meagher - 10

Next, let's say a player has two points. He can give these two points to someone, he can take two points away from someone, or he can give one point to someone and take one point from someone else. Let's say this player wants to take away 2 points from Phelps:

Dara Torres - 10
Michael Phelps - 8
Rowdy Gaines - 10
Mark Spitz - 10
Mary T. Meagher - 10

Then let's say a bunch of players basically dogpile on Phelps. Eventually, Phelps gets down to this:

Dara Torres - 10
Michael Phelps - 0
Rowdy Gaines - 10
Mark Spitz - 10
Mary T. Meagher - 10

Once a swimmer gets down to zero, he's out! He can't come back into the Points Game until the next game starts (if that ever happens).

You can use any criteria you want for the giving or taking away of points. You can give or take based on simply liking a swimmer, or simply thinking he or she is the best of all time or better than others on the list, or whatever other criteria you want to use. But you have to play by the rules!

The winner is the last swimmer standing! (or is that swimming?)

Rules

1. After you give or take points, you may go again only after 4 other forum posters have taken their turn after you. Based on how active the game is, I may modify, with forewarning, this rule to 3 or 5 or other numbers if necessary.

2. You may add a swimmer to the list, but only if s/he has not already been in the game and eliminated. Adding a swimmer takes the place of playing points, so it's either/or, you can't do both in one turn. Once you have added a swimmer, you may not do so again until you have gone another 3 turns.

3. You may only use a total of 2 points in one turn, so you can use your points in one of 5 potential ways: 1.) +2 [swimmer x], 2.) -2 [swimmer x], 3.) +1 [swimmer x] +1 [swimmer y], 4.) -1 [swimmer x] -1 [swimmer y], 5.) or +1 [swimmer x] -1 [swimmer y].

4. When you play points, please don't just repost the swimmer list with your change(s), but also say how you played your points at the bottom of your post. So, if you take 2 points from Dara Torres, change the swimmer list accordingly and post it anew, and then at the bottom, state, "-2 Dara."

5. Sometimes this game can get really hot and active, so I reserve the power, as game host, to PAUSE the game in the event that I feel the swimmer list is not accurately reflecting point changes. This usually happens because two or more players "stumble" over each other, posting and playing points at the same time. Once I have reviewed recent point-plays and made the sure the list is correct, I will RESUME the game.

6. Last but not least, you can't add anyone that posts here. Things would get nasty if points started getting subtracted from a fellow forumite.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank for catching the mistake on Biondi's points! It's been fixed, I see.

+2 johnny w. Same reason.

Perhaps the rules should be changed so we must add 1 and subtract 1

notsofast
June 19th, 2011, 05:22 AM
I think the rules need a tweak. One problem is that the number of swimmers who can be added is virtually limitless (unlike the cast of Lost, which formed the original version of this game). Swimmers could be added forever. In fact, if I added a swimmer right now, it would take the concerted effort of five people to eliminate that person. Before they were done, I could add still another swimmer.
So Proposed New Rule One: I think you might want to slim the cast down to the current leaders on the board, maybe those with more than fifteen points, and allow no new entrants.
And Proposed New Rule Two: I agree with previous post that you have to force people to cast negative votes, if you want anyone to be eliminated. There's something about swimming and other individual sports that makes it easier to embrace characters you like than to develop a loathing for those you do not. Personally, i think the presence of Vladimir Salnikov - just as an example, I'm sure he is a nice guy - on this list is kind of silly, but I don't see any need to work toward his removal. I mean I don't find the guy as grating as, say, Lebron James or the Dallas Cowboys.
And I think that's why after eighty-six posts, no one has been eliminated and only two characters have fewer points than they began with.

+2 for Salnikov, because, until Grant Hackett came along, there was no better distance swimmer in the world. He broke a mental/swimming barrier not unlike the 4:00 running mile.

That gets me thinking I need to add Hackett in four more posts before the possible rules change comes into play.

With the LOST game, after a point of about two weeks, we all decided to create an "endgame" where all you could do was take points away. So what if there were a slightly similar endgame here where we had a +1, -1 scenario? And then when we would schedule the endgame?

The point about the number of great swimmers being virtually limitless is a very good one. I hadn't thought of that. Perhaps by the theoretical endgame, then swimmer additions could be stopped, too?

What does everyone think?

How many of you swam in the Olympics and then set world records nearly as fast at 40 (yeah, I know, one of you)? It wasn't surreptitious. It was added. And now I'm adding 2 more points for the indignity.

And why hasn't Don Schollander been added?

Maybe you should read the rules. If you add a swimmer you aren't allowed to add or remove points from another swimmer in the same turn.

Johnny Weissmuller, +2, because Andy Warhol, who is from my hometown, had a magnificent painting of him in one of his New York studios, along with a gigantic stuffed Great Dane. I am pretty sure this is the best reason yet given on behalf of any of the swimmers in the list, and I am confident that this will lead to a well-deserved landslide victory for the man who dated Aunt Marie.

I defy any of you to watch this link (only 11 seconds long!) and not agree that Mr. Weismuller is the greatest aquatic being to ever take human form.

Adding a truly great female swimmer who was a pioneer. In the 70's she was allowed to swim at the California Boys high school meet to give her some competition. (And the free relay team she was on dusted my high school relay team, largely due to her contribution!)

You get to post again after there have been 5 posts since your last one, right?

I have been saving up my posts and figure I now have accumulated 72 points that I can give or take away.

I give them all to Johnny Weismuller, who should properly now have a score of 89. But until I make sure this is okay with the Dungeon Master, I will just add 2.

It was pretty amazing, absolutely.

But Shirley Babashoff anchored the 4x100 free relay that upset the East Germans to win gold in 1976. I still remember that race, though I couldn't find a video of it online. I think that was a pretty comparable upset, perhaps even more so considering the whole doping thing.

I would like to add Paul Asmuth. The first long distance swimmer superstar. I remember watching a college race where he negative split each 100 from the start of a mile swim- and he was just getting started. He was recently added to the ISHOF for marathon / open water. Plus he's a great guy(I used to swim with him in the 70s)

I am old enough to remember having watched it live on TV. Seeing the USA girls, none of which were petite (all about 5'10" or 11"), being physically dwarfed by the DDR behemoths was memorable. I do not remember Shirley having to make up a deficit, either. It was very close anyway.

The last statement is correct. Shirley Babashoff went into the water .40 ahead of GDR swimmer, Claudia Hempel and outsplit her by .28 for the victory. The USA time was 3:44.82 to GDR of 3:45.50 and the two stars of that relay were Jill Sterkal going in 3rd behind .81 of the GDR team and finishing .40 ahead of the GDR swimmer Andrea Pollack, and had a split time of :55.78, and in the 100 meter individual event, Jill Sterkel went :57.06. Wendy Boglioli swimming 2nd, swam a split time of :55.81 and her best time from a flat star was :57.80 at that time.

I remember watching that relay at the time. Our women swam unbelievably fast, much faster than projected. The E Germans led off with Kornelia Ender and when the US woman finished right behind her(I don't remember who the US lead off was) and I knew Shirley was anchoring I thought the US had a chance. That was a magical relay.

I loved watching her swim.
She tragically died at the early age of 29 with an inoperable brain tumor.

With my regular contribution to Johnny W now made, it looks like we have four contenders in the 20s:

Tarzan
The jug-eared bongsman
The energizer bunny
and Ivan the Rooskie Bear

I propose that Tarzan, who can swim with a knife clenched between his teeth, wrestle a crocodile while stabbing it in the head, finally dispatching the vicious creature to perdition, would have no trouble doing the same with the Bear and the Bunny (whom he might choose instead to impregnate, which would definitely slow her down in the water). That leaves only the jug-eared bongsman as a threat to Johnny W. winning this tournament outright.

Correct me if I am wrong, but substances inhaled from a bong are on the list of banned drugs for competition, correct?

That leaves Johnny Weismuller as the winner by default.

He may be dead, but he is the best swimmer the world has and will ever see, especially in jungle rivers.

Sorry, I forgot Mary T. Meagher in my list of swimmers with 20 or more points.

But it's an understandable oversight, I would argue.

You know how celebrities who truly deserve their fame only need one name?

Che, for example. Or Jim.

The converse is also true. If you need to use a middle initial, you just can't be that deserving of fame.

Johnny still wins.

+1 to Wilkie for being a cool guy
+1 to Shirley for being great even though her greatness was slightly masked by the cheaters from E Germ(if the 76 Olympics had been fair she would have had 5 Golds I believe.)
I want to list Kitajima since he probably is the greatest BR swimmer of all time, has a beautiful stroke,is a hard worker, but the whole dolphin kick fiasco means if I did nominate him I'd have to start subtracting points.

With 350 points on the board, it will take at least another 160 posts to arrive at a winner. And that assumes no one posts another swimmer and that all posts henceforth only subtract points - never add them.
More likely you are looking at another thousand or so posts.
Have a nice summer!
Surprised no one has added either of the Gary Halls, though one of them posts occasionally. But maybe I missed it.

OK. This is starting to get like the card game war: it's fun for awhile, but, when there's no visible sight to an end, it just gets tedious.

But, since it's not there yet, we gotta add Jeff Kostoff, who, I think, still holds the National HS 500 free record from 1983 (http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/results/records/USA_High_School_Records.pdf), as well as an impressive string of results (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Kostoff)

I agree. What does everyone think about having an Elimination Derby? Basically, for a period of time, you can only take points away from swimmers. We could make it last for 24 hours. By the end of the derby period, the list should be healthily shorter. :)

I have as rule change suggestion for the DM to keep this from getting so tedious. How about every 20 posts subtract 2 points from all the names. Then to stay in people would have to gain points regularly. This would speed up play.

Couroboros
June 29th, 2011, 08:54 PM
I don't know, that honestly sounds like the same thing but just at a more frenetic pace. Let's just try out this derby thing and see how that goes.

plus, it would be a nightmare keeping track of 20 posts and then doing the subtractions.
