View Full Version : Encouraging Zone Championship Bids

July 1st, 2011, 12:37 AM

I thought I would start a thread to see what comments people have about generating more interest in bidding for Colonies Zone Championship bids.

Any and all comments are appreciated.

George Mason has hosted the SCY Championship for the last nine (9) years. The SCM and LCM meets have had various hosts during the same period.

As we know, in recent years we struggle to get interested Clubs to submit bids in time for a review and vote at Convention.

How can this lack of interest be addressed? Are we making it too difficult on potential meet hosts? Are there less competitive swimmers participating in Zone Championship meets or meets in general? How do we address the risk of host burnout before it happens? Are there better ways to encourage interested bidders? How do other Zones manage to keep their championship meets successful?

Do we have similar issues/concerns about Open Water bids?

Instead of have a "bid" system; you might consider a rotation. Asked each club or LMSC that is interested in hosting to put on a rotation, then send reminders of who's next on the rotation. That way the Zone event move around the zone, this works well in the Breadbasket Zone (but we only have one zone meet per year).

I have not really been involved in LMSC preparations, though I greatly appreciate the men and women who give their time to set up the competitions. In my view, we should approach the Fairfax County Rec System and ask it to hold Masters meets. The facilities probably have a half dozen indoor pools, some of which are 50 meters, and all of which have blocks. We have nothing to lose by approaching them.

If anyone has any ideas, recommendations, please post here. We would like to get some discussion going before Convention in September, perhaps encouraging a few bids to be submitted by that time.
