View Full Version : Independence Day challenge

Here in the DVLMSC we area a little thin on meets this time of year. I imagine that this is true in many other places as well. Therefore, for fun, and to help sustain the motivation to train, I set forth this Independence Day challenge: Swim an 800 IM, time yourself and report your result here.

To kick off this challenge, (and since I know that someone would call my bluff on this if I didn’t do it myself) I did my 800 IM today (SCY) and swam it in 11:50. Splits were:
2:55 (fly in 2:55)
5:44 (back in 2:49)
8:13 (breast in 3:29)
11:50 (free in 2:37)
(Next stop, :bed:)

To compare swimmers of different ages and genders, compute your rating as follows:
1) Go to the Australian Masters Swimming records and find the record for the SCM 800 IM for your age group and gender.
http://www.portal.aussi.org.au/records/records.php?PHPSESSID=ca0dab81e2b02abbbbedd53f559b 991d&js=on
For example, for my age group, M45-49, the record is 10:53.34, held by someone named Mark Smedley. (What a great name for an IMer!)
2) Convert the Australian SCM record to SCY with the swimming world time converter.
http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/results/conversions.asp
(Just use the 400 IM conversion. Hey, this is for fun, we don’t have to be precise here.) For example, Mr. Smedley’s time converts to 9:45.39 SCY.
3) Convert both your time and the record time to a total number of seconds, and take the ratio of the record time to your time. For example, Mr. Smedley’s record time is 585s and my time was 710s, so my rating is 585/710 = 0.82. In other words my speed is 82% of that of the record swim for my age group and gender.
4) If you swim it SCM you won’t have to convert. If you swim it LCM, you can use the Austrailian LCM record and you will also not need to convert.

Anyone who completes this challenge gets a  .
The highest overall rating gets a  .
If you complete this challenge LCM, you are :weightlifter: .
So are there any takers? tjrpatt, That Guy, pwb, jaadams1, gdanner, couldbebetterfly? I know that there are some distance fly/IM types out there just itching to do this, so find a pool and celebrate the holiday! Any non-US swimmers, here is your chance to show that your motherland outshines the ‘States.

So are there any takers? I'll do this on Monday. Thanks for the idea. I had about 4K of my intended 5K SCM workout in mind, so doing this plus a cool-down gets me where I need to be.

I'm tapering for NW Zones next weekend so my answer is "probably not" until after the meet. But... who knows, maybe... :)

More because I'd have a hard time completing a 200fly, and a 200breast for that matter.

I am unaware of the forum 50, i will have to search it :)

Yes, that 200 fly precludes me from doing this, too. 75 is about my upper limit, and that is pushing it, unless one-arm fly is permitted. :)

If my pre-determined holiday workout gets boring I might try this with my new yellow zoomers LCM. I've never even thought about doing an 800 IM; given enough time I think I could get the job done! :)

I'll do the challenge, but I reserve the right to wait until at least mid-September to get back into shape after "not swimming" over the summer months. 1-2 times a week just doesn't cut it for me. :) I did do a 1000 Rev. IM YouTube - ‪3-27-11 1000 Rev IM.mp4‬‏ in a meet back in March though. Challenge that one huh?!?!??? I'm sure I could go much faster in the 1000 as well.

Tapering??? I'm trying to swim "enough" to keep my body in swimming shape so I can complete my events at my USA-S meet the same weekend! The 200 LCM Fly is going to suck for me at the end of Sunday too!!!

Swimming a 200 fly always sounds like a great idea until I actually get to the pool. Then...not so much. :afraid:

I completed this challenge today. Since I'm tapering, my workout was pretty short:

Bike 5 miles to gym
800 IM stroke drill
800 IM for time
400 warmdown
Bike 5 miles home

This was the first time I've ever done an 800 IM full stroke. Swimming in SCY, I went 10:31. I think pwb has a good chance of beating my time, even though he's swimming in SCM!

Great job That Guy! I am curious to see what your 200 splits were.

Thanks! I don't know for sure what my 200 splits were. I was in the worst lane in the pool for seeing the clock. The only split I saw for certain was at the 400 mark, which was 5:05. I did see 2:30 when I was about halfway down the pool to start the backstroke, so I was probably in the 2:20 to 2:22 range for the 200 fly, which would mean a 2:43-2:45 backstroke leg. My freestyle leg was perhaps 2:20, so that would put my breaststroke leg at 3:06. Again, only the 5:05 and 10:31 times are solid, the rest are guesstimates.

That was my experience as well, it didn't turn out to be as long and painful as I expected... but then again, I didn't do it long course. If this challenge has convinced you to do more stroke swimming and given you a way to enjoy your workouts more, I'd be very happy.

Yes it did!!!! Thank you for the suggestion to do this challenge karl!!
I think LCM was probably the easier way to do it unless you're trying to go hard. A 200 fly isn't so bad if you breath a lot and really glide after the breath. It's slow, but not too painful. I thought the 200 breast was the most difficult to do. I am a horrid breast stroker. It make my knees hurt and took forever!!

Funny, I like the 200 breaststroke... LCM even more so. 200 back on the other hand, is like slipping into a mobius (where time becomes a loop. ti-ti-time becomes a loop..) I always seem to end up desperately looking behind me for the flags.

Swim an 800 IM, time yourself and report your result here ... Convert both your time and the [Australian] record time to a total number of seconds, and take the ratio of the record time to your time ...

I did this July 3rd SCM as part of my favorite "Aussie Power IM Workout". It is such a favorite that I've failed to complete it twice in the last 6 months. Aussie, because it includes an 800 IM. Power, because everything is a power of 2.

Aussie Power IM Workout

800 warmup + swimdown, choice, surrounding the main set.

Main Set:
1 x 800 IM on 16:00
2 x 400 IM on 8:00
4 x 200 IM on 4:00
8 x 100 IM on 2:00

Main set is 3200 SCY/M and takes 64 minutes.

Did this SCM. 800 IM was 13:40, 400s were 6:40 & 6:45, 200s were 3:15's. Just like last time, I gave up after the 200s, could not face the 100s! Someday I will do it! Ratio of the 800 vs. Aussie record for 8IM in M50-54 is 11:49 vs. 13:40 or 88.6%

If I ever get the chance to go to Australia, I'd love to find a meet & swim an 800 IM. What a blast!

OK, I just "sucked it up" and did it tonight after work. Here's how it went:

800 IM for time (all splits are rough estimates from looking at clock during the turns)
Fly 2:25 (2:25)
Back 5:05 (2:40)
Breast 8:00 (2:55)
Free 10:17 (2:17)

That's it. Pretty good considering that I'm not swimming too much right now.

1 x 800 IM on 16:00
2 x 400 IM on 8:00
4 x 200 IM on 4:00
8 x 100 IM on 2:00

Main set is 3200 SCY/M and takes 64 minutes.

Today I based my workout on this concept. In SCY I did:

800 wu BE3,
1x(800 IM + 200 AR)/16:00,
2x(400 IM + 100 AR)/8:00,
4x(200 IM + 25 AR)/4:00,
8x(100 IM)/2:00,
200 cd

Since the intervals are generous for SCY I added some AR, which I am sure makes this a lot easier.

800 IM@11:48
This is 2s faster than the only other time I did and 800 IM:
U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums - View Single Post - Independence Day challenge

This time my splits were:
200 fly@3:00
200 bk@2:50
200 br@3:18
200 fr@2:40

Last time my splits were:
2:55 (fly in 2:55)
5:44 (back in 2:49)
8:13 (breast in 3:29)
11:50 (free in 2:37)
So by loafing the fly this time, I was able to punch a much better breaststroke leg.
Last time I pushed the free a lot harder, but last time I didn't follow it up with another 2400 yds of IM.

Now I need to :bed:

You guys are all animals. We have to do a 600 reverse IM as part of warm-up almost every other day and I totally hate it. My take on this would be (SCY of course!)
8 x 25 fly w/Zoomers on :30
4 x 50 back w/or w/out zoomers on :50
2 x 100 breast on 1:45is
200 free build to sprint
Ta Da! 800 IM!
In reality however, I will be swimming with the USAS team I train with, and practice is 7:30-10:30am on the 4th - we should get in a a good 8000 or more - I hope to finish the practice and not wimp out at the two hour mark. Then nappy time. No fireworks until it gets dark anyway!

I have a main set that I call "the pentathalon workout" that I've done a few times:

200 fly/3:00,
200 bk/3:00,
200 br/4:00,
200 fr/3:00,
400 IM/7:00,
100 fly/1:30,
100 bk/1:30,
100 br/2:00,
100 fr/1:30,
200 IM/4:00,
50 fly/:50,
50 bk/:50,
50 br/:50,
50 fr/:50,
100 IM/2:00,

Yes, the 200 & 100 br intervals are longer to accomodate my slow br.
Yes, the IM intervals are longer, which effectively gives a "Masters break" between rounds.

You guys are all animals.

That gave me an idea. In keeping with the theme of this thread, I did this today SCY:

Double Brute Squad 5,000

500 warmup

1 x 800 IM

1 x 400 fly

1 x 3300 free

5,000 Total

Plus: It took under 90 minutes to do it. Minus: It was nasty.

Splits
800 IM: 3:11 + 3:02 + 3:23 + 2:32 = 12:08 (then 3:00 rest)
400 fly: 3:31 + 3:40 = 7:11 (then 3:00 rest)
3300 free: 24:15 + 23:55 = 48:10 (1:27.5 per 100)

I took it easy the whole way, figuring the biggest problem was to avoid cramping up at the end of the 3300. On the one hand, there may be no training purpose to this, in which case it's all garbage yardage. On the other hand, it pushes some limits I'm not used to pushing, so maybe there's some virtue in it. I dunno. One thing for sure, I'm not going to do it again anytime soon.

Wake me up next year ... :bed:

I like the pentathlon workout and the double brute. I don't know about that 3300 though... maybe as backstroke...

Next training cycle I'm focusing on the 800 IM and 400 fly. Something different!

Good!! At least I won't see you in anymore 400 IMs or 200 Flys then! :D

I might swim those just for fun. They will seem like silly little 50's.

It has been an Independence Day challenge weekend. I tried to post an 800 IM yesterday but upon hitting the wall in 9:48, I could only conclude that I had done a 750. So today I took another crack at it. Yesterday's swim was a real pain-fest, so today I tried something different. I did DPS fly instead of regular fly. My fly leg was slower, around 2:35 instead of 2:25, but I made most of that up on the backstroke leg, which was not a recovery swim for a change. I ended up at 10:27, right in between my prior efforts of 10:21 and 10:31 in this event. My free leg today could have been faster so I think DPS fly doesn't slow me down, overall. This strategy is the one I'll use when I swim the 800 IM in competition next month!

That was my experience too.

Yesterday I raced an 800 IM in competition for the first time, in the 800 free event at NW LCM Zones. I used DPS fly and it was super effective. I was leading my heat at the 400 mark, but then two guys pulled ahead of me while I was swimming breaststroke. I got the lead back on my freestyle leg. My time was 11:23.83. That was fun! It did hurt though. Yeah. It did.

Thanks guys! It was a Masters meet: http://www.swimphone.com/mobile/meets/meet_menu.cfm?smid=3425

A big +1 to Swimosaur's link. I learned DPS fly by watching those videos of Ida Marko-Varga. My interpretation of it is a bit different than hers (I take 3 kicks per stroke, whereas she says that she only takes one (though it looks like she takes two)) but we both have a glide phase which is the key to saving energy and being able to swim fly for longer distances.

So with both of our 10:44.44 entries in the 800 Free event, do we need an official gridge, or is it already on like Donkey Kong!!??!?!!
We can at least pretend to break the record (if we do), even though it won't be official.

I guess if it's a sanctioned gridge then it's on like Donkey Kong. If it's a recognized gridge, then it's only on like Pac-Man. If it's unrecognized, then it's only on like Q-Bert. :dunno:

Kirk, will you be able to assist? You'll probably be a heat or 2 after us if you're swimming it. If you're not swimming the 800, then I really doubt you'd stick around to watch a couple of us ya-hoos play around in the pool. :)

Hey, I did the Aussi Power Workout today (my 4th time I think.) I got a new pr in the 800 SCY IM = 11:44.
2:58 (2:58)
5:52 (2:54 -yuck)
9:12 (3:20 -started to get pretty uncomfortable here)
11:44 (2:32)

Here are my previous attempts: http://forums.usms.org/showthread.php?19080-Independence-Day-challenge&p=254043&viewfull=1#post254043

Yea, but that's no a true Aussi Power Set because I did it SCY not SCM.

You are spotting me quite a few years so your rating will be substantially better than mine.
The SCM record in your age group is 12:28.56 so your rating is 94.9.
(That record needs to come down though. The record in the next age group up is several seconds faster.)
The SCM record in my age group is 10:53.34 so my rating is 83.6.

Those Australian 800IM records? Check out the shiny new W70-74 SCM one. (Swimmer placed 4th in the 800 free at Nationals, despite swimming it IM. She broke the 400IM world record at the same meet. Also holds backstroke WRs)

Impressive swim.

The Aussi record for M30-34 800 SCM IM is 10:52.23.
Using the 400 IM converter, that converts to 9:47 SCY
so your rating is 111!

FWIW:
The M30-34 record appears to be low-hanging fruit. For comparison:
The M35-39 record is 10:37.90, which converts to 9:34.17 SCY.
The fastest overall is actually the M40-44 record of 10:02.72, which converts to 9:02 SCY.
Maybe you should make a trip down-under to set the record straight.
