Maybe they shouldn't even adjust themselves for the time difference too much. Just find a dark hotel room and sleep in the middle of the day between morning heats and finals.

Just received an email (below) from our PACIFIC Chair, Michael Moore the great...
Looks like PACIFIC Masters will step in and help out with volunteers at Nationals!

I love this about our sport and it sure is a nice way to demonstrate that swimming really is for life.

"Due to the extraordinary number of swimmers (1800!!) attending this year's USA Swimming National Championships, we need 30 Timers to staff the second competition pool during the morning heats.

Timer shifts available:
August 2 - 6:8:15a - 2p
30 Timers per shift
Minimum age: 16

Sign up at http://basoc.org/usswimvolunteers "

All but seven members of the USA world championships will be at Palo Alto:

Michael Phelps
Rebecca Soni
Caitlin Leverenz
Natalie Coughlin
Amanda Beard
Eric Shanteau
Chad LaTourette

I suspect everyone wants to go to the Pan American Games, which is the meet selected from this nationals. Pan Ams are in October.

Will be interesting to see how they handle the time change. They got on a plane this morning Shanghai time (last night, US time), and will have to race about 24 hours after landing. Flying west across the International Date Line doesn't affect people as badly, but we'll see how many swim as fast or faster. There will be a few people who didn't go to worlds that will be favored for wins if the worlds people don't step up.

So I guess the meet is so big they are using both pools for prelims. Anyone know how they're going to do it? Will they split it by genders like what was done at Worlds in '06?

1 Meyer, Mark 21 Rockville Montgo 2:02.17 2:02.95

This was to determine the second alternate for the final, so in all likelihood Meyer will not be swimming the event for the third time in one day... but I will certainly be paying attention to see if such a travesty does occur :)

Said he didn't feel smooth until the last 25 or so, and then his legs started to go a bit, but you couldn't tell from watching it. He looked really good in that swim.

This gives us a frame of comparison for USA's future stars this week at Jrs

I have to say I'm tired of these Longhorns and the long reach of their recruiting arms. They've snagged two of our best swimmers. Of course, in the Smith house, the reach really isn't that long.

Depends on how you define "long reach." Texas doesn't recruit any international swimmers, unlike Cal and Auburn (random examples).

I'm not opposed to coaches going outside the US, but let's be clear about their reasons for doing so.

I was largely joking. Certainly in the 1980s, and no doubt in more recent times, Cal made a run at recruiting every top US swimmer who could get admitted. We tried hard to get Pablo, for example. What you do see is that it is very hard for Cal to get the "best" football players in. Even so, they don't all graduate, to put it mildly. So they can get in, but not always stick around... Plus, football sucks at Cal, to my disappointment.

I had a conversation with a die-hard Auburn football fan this past week at Nationals. He asked me if I was a football fan and would I be coming back for an Auburn football game ( :) )

I enjoyed describing the U of Auburn aquatic facility to him and told him he should take some time to go inside and count the National Championship banners hung in that building.

Auburn's Swim Team far exceeds the football team in national championship titles.
The die-hard football fan was shocked. He had no idea. But he asked more questions and I think he will try to make a stop by the Tiger's pool!

Anyway, how can we compare the number of available recruitable football players to the number of swimmers?
Not even close. And especially when the acceptance standards are relaxed.
It seems like the recruiting coach has either a philosophy of training American swimmers or training swimmers.
Luckily there are a lot of colleges and a lot of coaches with varied philosophies. Hopefully everyone gets to study - and swim if they choose.
