I suggest you contact the Kansas Riverkeeper, who also happens to be a swimmer. You can contact her through the Friends of the Kaw at www.kansasriver.org. While the Friends of the Kaw focus on the Kansas River, I believe they are involved with the KC-to St. Louis canoe race each year and I am sure they are familiar with the Missouri River.

I can't wait to hear more about this one. I'm a St. Louis girl, and those rivers speak to me on many level. Do you get to swim into the confluence?

Thanks Jayhawk. I will shoot her an email.

All early stages ref: Got I believe alot of research ahead of me. The river does seem to book along at a swift pace which is good but very dangerous at the sametime.

Cheers

The Missouri River has always been a very dangerous river. Over a 10-year period beginning in the 1850s, about 400 steamboats sank in the Missouri River.

There is an annual canoe race from Kansas City to St. Louis. It is called the "Missouri 340" because it is 340 miles long. The 2011 race began yesterday and is in progress. Participants are allowed 88 hours to finish the race and, according to the race web site, "...To finish this race in 88 hours is a huge accomplishment. Only 2/3 of the teams were able to do that last year."

You can read about the race here:
