View Full Version : 1,000,000 yards!

This year has been the first year of my three swimming so far that I've kept a log of my yardage. I didn't realize it at the time, but in doing the math this late night/early morning, I crossed 1,000,000 yards on Wednesday, November 16th. It happened sometime during my early morning workout at Santa Clara Swim Club, probably at the exact same moment I was resting at the wall and the flying hand of the hapless lady I shared a lane with whacked my nose! My nose was sore for the rest of the day.

These are my totals per month:

Jan: 100,700
Feb: 106,750
Mar: 110,350
Apr: 121,840
May: 68,261
Jun: 106,948
Jul: 79,725
Aug: 50,950
Sep: 107,100
Oct: 63,850
Nov: 111,000 (so far)

Has anyone else crossed a million yards this year? Getting close?

Hopefully you are participating in Go The Distance and picking up all sorts of swell awards.

You went 1,027,834 yards in a year! Thats an 86,000 avg a month!
Great job keeping track of your yardage like that. You could pull a lot of good info out of doing so. How did you go about it? Do you record your total yardage every practice in a logbook or something? or even the whole practice. Then you could take daily totals for strokes/drills/kicks/etc if you wanted to. get a years worth of info (as you have) could give you a cool insight or all kinds of stuff really.
I think I will start doing this. :applaud:
I have never kept track of my yardage, I used to just swim. and not think about it. I've always wondered how many yards or miles i've swam in my lifetime. Looking at that black line with a vertical side glance of the pool deck...

How did you go about it? Do you record your total yardage every practice in a logbook or something?

If you are a USMS member, you can keep track of your yardage in your online FLOG (Fitness Log) which is part of your MyUSMS page (http://www.usms.org/myusms/).

You can then click a button to enter the Go The Distance event (http://www.usms.org/fitness/content/gothedistance), where your entire year's yardage is automatically totaled each morning and posted in several reports (http://www.usms.org/fitness/results11/gtd11results.php).

Not a member of USMS? Just click the red Join/Renew button (http://www.usms.org/reg/) from the home page to join online!

Congrats! I'm not going to get to 10^6 this year, but I'll be close. As of today I've done 812,000 yards and change. I'll probably end the year somewhere around 930,000 yards.

I'm at 935,819y right now so I should make it. My goal is 600 miles for the year (50 a month avg) and I am right at the proper pace for that.

At one point during the year I had the goal of being a "million meter man" (which sounds pretty cool) and I was way ahead of pace after the summer, but work and family have seriously cut into my training this fall so I don't think I'll make it.

I second the recommendation for "Go the Distance," which can be connected to the FLOG. The FLOG is a pretty convenient way to track training and it will tell you if you are on track to make your goal.

I think you can go here to sign up:

On the Go The Distance event, you have a possibility of setting a goal for total mileage covered in the year. I set mine at 1,000,000. I don't think I'll make it this year. I tried to set it for 10,000,000 miles, but the software apparently does not think that is possible or wise, so it is denies the setting. I think I need the extra challenge.

Nice job on 1e6 yards. That's impressive. there is a guy over 1500 miles. I guess that is about 2.64e6 yards. That's over 60K a week!

Wow- that is a pretty nice accomplishment. A sincere congratulations!

I've wondered how we can hook up these aerobic folks to the power grid somehow to bolster our municipal energy needs. I would be of little use, so please, experiment amongst yourselves.

I'm with Speedo on this one. How cool would that be? I have heard of gyms that have self-powered TV's; they only work if you walk on a treadmill or pedal a bike to provide the energy to run them. Hmmm, if we could only do that sort of thing with swimmers...

 to anyone who can swim that many miles in one year! :applaud: And, Chris, I'm a sprinter who will join Speedo in admitting to this, as well. :agree:

P.S. I've been a fan of loooooong distance swimmer Lynne Cox, since watching her train as a teenager in the waters off Long Beach and Seal Beach, California, as well as running on the soft sand of East Beach, Long Beach. I was just a kid in awe... And, as an adult, I have enjoyed her books. :cheerleader:

Thanks for pointing out the FLOG! I entered Go the Distance and inputted my yardage from all year. You can check out my pretty awesome November here. (http://www.usms.org/myusms/flog/index.php?yearID=2011&monthID=11&dayID=19) :) I did almost 60,000 yards this week, including four doubles and a triple! Additionally, I have a two-day meet this weekend and I'm putting up in-season best times. Not bad for coming right off the most grueling week of the year.

1x10^6 yds is gerat. Good going!

My current year-to-date total according to my FLOG:
401.89 miles (=707,319 yards, =646,772 meters)
Last year I did 399 and was really annoyed not to get 400 (on account of the pool closing early on my last swim day) so I'm happy to pass that already this year.

And what is the deal with this GTD thing? If you enter GTD do they really send you free stuff just for FLOGing your workouts? When do you have to enter?

The mesh bag is pretty nice and I look forward to the swim suit (500 miles). The $5 gift certificate was more like a coupon though and could only be used for Nike swim products.

Tonight I read an article that said Michael Phelps swam 43 miles last week.

I think I'm close to 1 million yards, more like 1.1 actually. But that is my lifetime odometer (since August 2008):cane:

I've just passed 1,150,000! Over the next two weeks with classes out of the way and nothing else to do but a brief two days down in LA, I'll be doing a lot of swimming, so maybe I can get that number up to 1.3 mil.

edit: I'm actually just past 650 miles for the year... maybe I should go for 750 before NY? :)

Thanks, Trout, for the encouragement. I would love to do a 10K open water but I'm too slow:cane:. I understand that we have to finish the 10K in less than 4 1/2 hours and my 10K in the pool last June was 4hr 49 min, and that was with a line to follow and 200 pushes off the wall! This past year I worked on increasing yardage, so maybe this year I can work on increasing speed. Happy New Year!:chug:
