Well you did manage to come up with probably the strangest gridge ever (http://forums.usms.org/blog.php?bt=82667). And that's saying something.

Here's my question re James' gridge: should he be forced to swim a legal 200 fly? I have a feeling we'll see lots of one-handed touches and maybe even flip turns if we don't stipulate this rule.

smontanaro

And will he be required to use stilts?

That Guy

Yes. Since I will not be there on Saturday, knelson can enforce this in whatever manner he sees fit. After a series of PM's on this subject, knelson is now participant #4 in this gridge, so he has a vested interest in making sure that James observes whatever random rules we think up. I'm thinking fast-stache...

OK Kirk...make the rules. Or don't make them. We'll see what I can do. I'll let you run the video!!

If it really comes down to it, I can go a 2:03 "legal". What the heck...maybe I will just to make you guys  !!!! The only problem is that it won't count for a 200 Fly time, but at least I'll know I can do it. :applaud:

I will be in two meets this weekend, however, neither of them count for USMS. On Saturday, I will be swimming in my first Geezer Games, now that I'm 50. :cane: :D And, on Sunday, I will be returning to the same pool for a Georgia Masters developemental meet, scheduled as a tune-up for Nationals. Last Saturday, I was in a meet (that counted for USMS) at Georgia Tech. At the end of the month, I'm off to Nationals. I love April! :bliss:

Alright then, let's say it must be a legal 200 fly. I don't think you need any crutch to make it a good gridge. You'll probably need to find someone else to video your swim, though. Odds are I'll be in the next heat!

Chowmi and I are facing off in the 50 fly at Colonies Zones on Saturday. http://www.patriotmasters.org/ColoniesZone2012/results/index.htm. I wish we were right next to each other, but looks like we'll be in lanes 3 and 5.

I'm seeded at 2:06.01, so I should be a few heats ahead of you. But you should be there for a semi-front row seat.

We'll see what I can do! It's all about fun anyway! :D

I might as well. :) I'll have another 200 Fly, along with all the other distance strokes and 400 IM the following weekend in a USAS pentathalon meet.

I'm not sure I could even do that anymore ... 10-11 off the start. We're seated within .11 -- that's a good gridge!

Well, then you can compare the 200 flys. :)

If you are lucky, there will be some 250# guy who is just slightly faster than you in lane 4, so you and Chowmi can both eat wake the entire way and get lousy times. That's what typically happens to me when I swim fly, but then again, almost nobody weighs less than me so I always get washed around unless I am leading, and since I am not fast that doesn't often happen.

I do feel like fly creates the most jostling and waves. But not this time! Men and women swim separately at Zones. There is a tall skinny girl in the middle.

No worries, she is going to be eating your wake anyway:)

And yes, nothing compares to fly for being tossed around like a cork. I breathed in a badly timed wave during a 50 fly last summer and was coughing the entire back half. Very uncomfortable.

I'm planning to pace him to a fast 400 IM record...again! He told me last time at Kirkland that he actually enjoys swimming the 400 IM with me right next to him. I get out to a fast Fly/Back, and he trys to reel me in during the breaststroke. My goal is to not see him in front of me on Saturday. :afraid:

I ended up with four silvers in my other races. In all, we swam 5 races in about one hour. :afraid:

Tomorrow, it's back to Gwinnett for a USMS developmental meet for 5 more races, including the 200 breaststroke; the last race of my race day. :afraid: :censor:

I think Rick Colella set 4 national records in M60-64 this weekend at PNA Champs. 100 BR 1:04.7, 200 BR 2:21.0, 100 IM 58.x, 400 IM 4:33. He just missed the 50 breast record, and knelson and i were in the pool when he took a run at the 1000 and 1650 records.

As Allen posted in the breaststroke lane, Megan Jendrick posted some terrific SCM times at the Oregon Association meet: http://www.swimphone.com/mobile/meets/individual_results.cfm?smid=3408&id=3621-061BU&fn=Megan&ln=Jendrick

Congrats to James, Elaine and That Guy!!! I don't understand how James does this back-to-back-to-back-to-back event thing ... amazing.

It actually went back-to-back, then skip one, then back-to-back-to-back. :) Events #1,2,4,5,6 were the ones I swam.

But it felt like 5 back to backs!!

The key to my success: Fast food (makes you swim fast, hence the name) and whatever else I can find, 12 oz. sodas at both breaks and lunch at work, and a 44oz. soda on the way home. Oh yeah...and a couple hours of swimming each week in the pool. :D

Thanks Fort! I can do certain combinations of events with short rest between, but there are others that just don't work. I need to rest after a 400 IM, so I'm not really sure how James did that either.

I don't know either...100% honest. Ask Kirk. I was with him pretty much after the 400 IM till I went for the backstroke.
I was flat out exhausted. I didn't even know how I was going to complete the 200 Back. IMO, it's the hardest event out there, because you have to use your legs soooo much.

I just went out relaxed, and then somehow held on to it, dropping almost 5 seconds! It's probably mainly that I had no expectations heading in to the race either! A head that can't think is sometimes better than "well prepared" one for a well thought out race.

...plus I knew my daughter was videoing the races too! That gave me incentive to perform for the camera! :D

This is a bizarre timing error from Y Nats. Only one 50 year old woman has ever broken 25 (Traci, the NR holder). Maybe they should have checked their results more carefully.

Leslie, thank you for pointing that out. I will investigate. I was at the meet and I collected the results file from the meet director and uploaded it to the database.

The meet had a lot of relays and at the end of the meet they hand-entered all of the leadoff splits into the computer. Because of the way the meet software works the most efficient way for them to do that was to create separate events, which they called "time trials" in the software (the software does not have a choice for "leadoff split"). I suspect that this was a relay leadoff split. If the relay team swam in a different order from what was printed on the card (or if they had a substitution for the first swimmer) and didn't write it onto the card, then the computer operator wouldn't have known that.

Lesson for everyone: if you swim on a relay and there is a substitution on the team, or if you swim in a different order, PLEASE make sure that the timers cross out the name on the card and write in the correct swimmer's name. Legibly. Your meet director will be eternally grateful.

Chow Blog (http://www.usms.org/forums/blog.php?u=7787)

I missed this entire section - where was I??? I have not been on the forums for a few days and missed my own gridge. Literally and figuratively this year!

Well, here's the scoop from my end. I'm going to stick with the story that I didn't get the memo and joined the wrong gridge. I was duking it out with the 27 crowd! Just kidding, it was a super fun meet! I give the Colonies zone meet a super big thumbs up!!!!! I never saw Fort during the race, she was on the other side. I was with 2 other 27'ers and we were all very close. I went faster than my 27.4 at South Central zones, so time wise i was happy (27.2), but even more happy with the execution of 1/1 breathing down/back as I mentally lapsed at SC zones and took way too many breaths. It is more luck of the draw, but I hit both the turn and finish on the walls, which I did not at SC zones.

Why did I not go as fast as the last several years (26.6 to 26.9)? And in fact, I was just about .50 seconds off in all the 4 x 50 events. I chose to start P90X and am 30 days in. I worked my swimming around it, not the X around swimming. It has been a nice break! But I still love meets. I'll stille even travel for a meet even though i'm not in top form. Who cares! I don't! Here I come! The other big reason is my left shoulder was bothering me, so I completely avoided Fratenity of Flyers month (March) which is arguably why I am so strong come zone champs time (late March/April).

I simply didn't put in the fly training to have the speed and strength of prior years. But that's not a bad thing. My shoulders didn't hurt after swimming, and that was the entire reason for not doing fly in workouts! It was still really fun, I am very pleased with this time, I hope it stands for a top ten, and the SC zone swim was a big wake up call on mentally lapsing, which rarely happens but when it does - I paid particular attention to this at Colonies - it was a very well executed swim. All of my 50 times were just about .50 off my "recent best" masters times, so that is also a good sign - that it is not one stroke or event that is way "off". You can control some things, others not, the key is to know what you can and cannot control. I was hoping I could still muster a 26.99, but alas, it just wasn't there. I can't say "I coulda woulda shoulda!" because I did everything possible - I showed up, entered with an aggressive entry time to ensure center seeding and signal i'm going to race, and I executed my race strategy, plus had the luck o' the walls.

Fort had an awesome race! I only saw the video and my spidery not-yet-fully P90X'd out arms flailing in the background, but you could tell the well-oiled precision of her swim along with the strength! I can't wait to read what the naysayers are going to come up with as her handicap for this national record, tee hee!!!

Please correct me, but are YMCA rules and USMS rules
different about the order of swimming ?

I was under the impression that, in USMS, once the entry has been
turned in, neither the membership or the order could be changed.

My team once lost a national record in
the 800 Free Relay beacuse they changed the order......

I don't know about YMCA rules, but this is what the USMS rule book says:

102.9.5 First and last names of eligible relay swimmers, their ages and order of
swimming shall be submitted to the clerk of course or to the head lane
timer. Any changes in names of the competing swimmers or their order of
swimming must be declared to the head lane timer prior to the start of the
relay heat in which such relay team is entered. No changes will be permitted
thereafter.

That appears to mean that, as long as your heat hasn't started, and provided you tell the head timer in your lane, you can legally change the order of swimmers. Jayhawk or Rob, correct me if I'm reading that wrong please!

You could name four (4) all-new people, and just
hand the list to the head lane timer. They don't
have to approve, so you just go ahead and swim.

Talk about "event management...."

Are you planning to ferret out more people to castigate rather than continue with your campaign of harassment against me?

Correct, and it's great if you ask me. The reality of masters swimming is you don't always know who's going to be available to swim the relay when the relay entries are due. As long as the names and ages are correct before the heat goes off I don't see any downside. If you've ever tried to organize relays you know it's not an easy task.

I agree !

It would be great too, to go back to those
wonderful days of yesteryear, when you
could just arrive at the meet, do a warm
up, and decide on the spot, whether to enter the
meet, and deck-enter any event !

There were NO heat-sheets.

When you "entered" an event, they
gave you an IBM card, which served
as your entry "verification," with heat and lane
assignment and a place for the timers
to record your results.

Seeding was manual, just putting the
correct card in the right slot on the board.
(some folks "swapped" cards).

No written records of who was entered......

Some folks warmed up "in secret," and didn't appear behind
the blocks until the previous heat was just finishing !

Until the event was called to the blocks,
NOBODY knew who was going to be swimming,
not even the meet manager !

PLUS, you could "seem" to have entered an event,
and then "scratch" that event, and "deck enter"
something else.

Kept everybody guessing !
Here (http://www.inlandnwmasters.org/meets-events/12SWAT-Plunge.pdf) is a meet with deck entries allowed. It's not quite as fast and loose as what you describe above, but deck-entering still allows for a degree of gridge secrecy that is not found in most meets.

It just costs you more to do it, and it's a semi-pain on the meet entry person trying to get them in at the last minute. But it is a good way to get some extra people in the meet in small LMSCs like ours. Our largest two meets in the past year have been 99 and 80. Our average is about 60+- 10 or so.
