I'm training for the Navy PST which includes a 500 yard swim using the combat swimmer stroke (modified side stroke).

Does anyone know drills I can do to master this stroke?

My goal is to be able to swim 500 yards in less than 8 minutes.

Any help is much appreciated.

There was a swimmer on my team last summer that was trying to qualify for the navy seals. When he joined my team, he was already very proficient at the combat stroke. He could do his 500 yard combat stroke in about 7 mins. I'll ask him what he did to learn the stroke and if there were any drills he used.

Gliding and relaxation - just like breast.

Narrow kicking is important with swimming, but it is weird they call the kick for the combat stroke the "scissor kick"
