I am putting together a list of Fitness Events and Challenges available to USMS members. These could be virtual, postal, logs, or anything any club has come up with to motivate folks to swim more. If you know of any such event would you please post it on this thread. I promise to post a final list in a compact form if I get some responders. I already know about GTD, Postal 5K/10K, and the Hour Swim series. Thank you, Robin Walker

Info should get updated as the dates get closer (usually done between Nov. and Dec. each year)

Annual Brute Squad open to anyone around the nation. Can be done in SCY or SCM, either in a meet or in a practice.

It doesn't even have to be timed (for the competition awards), can be done solely for the love of swimming the three greatest events ever:
400 IM, 200 Fly, 1650 (1500) Free

Get a Brute Squad T-shirt or Sweatshirt as well.

12,000 yards of Christmas (link in pdf): http://hazyracing.weebly.com/uploads/9/7/6/7/9767556/12000postal2011.pdf

TAM postal 1650, http://www.tammasters.org/index.html

BLSDA postal (link on left side): http://www.bldsa.org.uk/

You mention USMS's one hour, 5/10K, and GTD, but how about the 3000/6000 yard postals?

I've done the brute squad before. Holy crap that was hard, but the T-Shirt was awesome. Someone out there used to host a 15-min postal, which was intense.

Thanks in advance for the list. I tire sometimes searching the internet for these postals.

Similar to the Brute Squad, the Canby Gators host an annual Animal Meet, where you swim the 1000 free, 400 IM, and 200 fly. (They also have 500/200/100 and 200/100/50 divisions so that they get more than 5 entries :D).

Swimsuit Addict has us trying a Turducken (http://forums.usms.org/blog.php?b=6913) set around the holidays - I offered it to our team but no one else was hungry enough to try it.

What about the Butternuts? http://www.grinswim.org/~nasti/butternuts.html

usms.org has the postal swims on the calendar on the main page.

Not sure how long this is open, but I supported the girls from MI here: http://www.channelforals.org/

Of course, FLOGging is a great motivator, too!

30x100 on 1:10 is a great one that no one actually wants to do but people talk a lot about.

For working on your tan:
- Maui Channel Relay
- Waikiki Roughwater
- Bermuda Round the Sound

Really any open water event.

I didn't see the check off challenge mentioned yet.

Hi Folks,

Last year Minnesota Masters hosted a series of Postal Pentathlon swims. I did them all.

Sprint Pentathlon = 50 of everything plus a 100 IM
Middle Distance Pentathlon = 100 of everything plus a 200 IM
Iron Man Pentathlon = 200 of evrything plus a 400 IM

I received a nice t-shirt, some certificates, and a trophy for my efforts.

I think I was the only participant from California. Hilarious.

Thank you Minnesota!

There is another postal Brute Squad hosted by the Davis Aquatic Masters (http://damfast.org/). It is an official Pacific Masters Swimming event open to any USMS member. You can do your swim any time during the month of November.

For those who don't know, Brute Squad is:

200 Fly
400 IM
1000 Free

In the DAM version of the event, your time is the total time it takes you to swim the whole thing, including rests in between if you take them...

Wisconsin Masters has the "Wisconsin Water Warriors Fitness Event" in November and December to encourage winter/holiday fitness. The info for 2012 isn't up yet, but it's on the event calendar. Here's the 2011 info:

Interesting... if you swim it straight through, it becomes a very unusual IM event: 300 fly, 100 back, 100 breast, 1750 free.

Exactly... and that is how many of us strategize it, too.

Today is the first day of the Brute Squad Challenge so I tried it out. I should have picked a different day to do this. I was hurting by the 100 mark and by the 150, this was a survival swim. That is no way to swim a 2250, but I completed it. I went 29:39, which I think I should be able to improve on in the years to come.

If I take my best practice times in the brute squad events, add them up, and then add 10 seconds per 100 fly to account for swimming DPS fly instead of regular fly, this is the result: 2:15 + 4:53 + 19:06 + 0:30 = 26:44. So my time was 10.91% slower than the fastest time that I could reasonably expect to go in practice. Plenty of room for improvement...

Any other Brute Squad members out there?

Except maybe for someone who is just a terrible freestyler, I believe the way to do this event is to start with 12x25 fly on a not-too-hard interval. Whatever you lose on the 300 fly by resting this way you will more than pick back up as you negative-split the 1750 free. Basically, it is a 1750 free with a weird warm-up.

300 DPS fly is normally not a problem for me. I just felt terrible this morning.

Well, congrats on sticking it out! I plan on Bruting some time this month. I haven't decided when yet.

I've used the 12 X 25 strategy before, and it seemed to work OK. Can't decide if I should use it again this year.

What about this one? http://www.pacificmasters.org/comp/pool_meetsheet/12dambspostal.pdf

(Doesn't matter to me either way; for instance I completed the Checkoff Challenge this year even though I didn't actually enter it. I didn't enter because I didn't like this year's t-shirt. If I want to walk around wearing a bulls-eye, I'll go work at Target.)

Staring today 11/01/12 - Go Postal

Minnesota Postal Pentathlons - Sprint, Middle Distance, and Iron Man
http://www.minnesotamasters.com/

Davis Aquatic Masters - 4th Annual Brute Challenge
http://www.damfast.org/

I completed the Minnesota Postals last year for the first time. Received a trophy for my age group. Hilarious.

I did the Brute Challenge last year with Fort Collins. Great T-shirt. Was sad to hear the cancelled this years event. Looks like the T-shirt for DAM is pretty cool.

Sprint Pentathlon tonight.
Middle Distance Pentathlon tomorrow.
Iron Man & Brute Challenge on Saturday.

I'm knocking them out 1-2-3.

I did the 3000 Yard Postal last Thursday evening.

Post(al) Master that's what I am. LOL.

Forgot to mention that I would encourage you to read the directions for DAM's Brute Challenge before you swim it.

Aside from your time for each swim they are also asking for your rest time between each swim to be included in your total time. From your first stroke on the Butterfly to your last stroke on the 1650.

Agree with you guys on the t-shirt for the Check Off Challenge. It could have been a little more imaginative. I would have signed up, but I did not like the t-shirt either.

I completed the Check Off Challenge two times in less than 12 months but that's another story. Workouts not included.
