... Celebrity 400 IM!

Just think of the possibilities ...

Lochte as the coach/Louganis role
Phelps, Gary Hall (Sr) and Tracy Caulkins (now Stockwell) as judges
Rowdy and Misty as hosts

Which celebrities would you like to see try to King of All Swimming Events?

I would definitely watch this. I'd also be fascinated to see professional athletes in other sports try it. And see most of them fail spectacularly, of course, at least in the training montage.

I'd watch. Here are my casting choices:

From the sports world:

Shaq already has some experience in the reality television swimming world, so let's use that to stir up some controversy. Unfair advantage?

Speaking of possibly unfair advantages - Serena Williams and Ryan Lochte, both Gatorade-sponsored, are friends. Has he already passed along some of the secrets of his success? Will that relationship affect the outcome of the show?

Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world... on land and for short distances. What will happen in the pool?

And will McKayla Maroney be impressed with the 400 IM? Only time will tell.

From the media/entertainment world:

First he was Captain Tightpants, now Nathan Fillion is Captain Tightjammer!

As Veronica Mars, Kristen Bell solved mysteries - can she figure out the mystery of the 400 IM? She also shared the couch with Ryan Lochte on the Tonight Show, so maybe she's got the inside scoop... or will he take his revenge for her interrupting his interview?

You may know him as the voice of the Olympics, but how about we turn the tables a bit? Welcome to the pool, Bob Costas.

Every reality show needs someone who's famous for being famous. I understand the Kardashian sisters currently fill this role. Pick one.

I think a Celebrity 50 free (with Dara Torres?) might be the best you'd be able to get with most non-swimmers... No way most celebrities could quickly put together a legal 100 IM, much less a 400 IM!!! Love the idea for a show, though.

The competition could be how much time you can improve over the length of the show + how your stroke technique improves (judged by swimmers/coaches)?

Maybe USMS needs to take its great video creation skills, team up with someone like SwimSwam and produce it?

We need to have a few folks like the underdog / no-way-can-survive character that Louie Anderson plays on Splash: what about ...
* William 'the refrigerator' perry?
* that note dame football player who got duped with the girlfriend hoax?
* rush Limbaugh? (Controversy drives viewership, though he might be DQ'd for doping ban?)

Swimming with the Stars!

Like dancing with the stars, but with more cheesecake. Each buf celebrity bod gets paired with a buf trainer from the US team. Who wouldn't watch JLo work out with Nathan Adrian? Johnny Depp & Natalie Coughlin? We have a deep bench of hotties on our side. Training includes lots of scantily-clad beach & pool shots. What's not to like? Competition at the end could be a relay.

Medley relay! They could start with a team and whittle it down to four each. I would watch this. :-)

I actually watched Splash last night. Although I think the concept is decent, we may have reached a new low in content versus filler on a TV show. What was there, about six dives last night? And this is being somewhat generous with the word "dive." Let's say ten seconds of actual content in a one hour show.

I'd love to see this show as long as it replaced the stupid SPLASH show. SPLASH is an insult to human intelligence.

SPLASH is an insult to human intelligence.

I thought that was true of all so-called "reality" shows... On the positive side, as the number of these shows increases, there is less and less reason to even turn on the TV.

There was a similar show to this in South Korea called "Kiss and Cry" but with figure skating and Korea's 2010 Olympic gold medalist Yuna Kim teaching celebrities to pairs skate. The celebrities were paired with someone with a figure skating background. I watched a little bit with my wife. Some were pretty impressive and some were absolutely terrible. I think they got the idea from a Canadian show called "Battle of the Blades" where they pair retired NHL players with pro skaters in the same concept.

While I'm not totally convinced this would be popular amongst the general non swimming public, I do have family in the reality show production business and could provide you with a contact if you'd like to pitch the idea.

An idea like this might have its best opportunity of success immediately following a summer Olympic Games.

My thoughts... a few coaches (Rowdy Gaines, Summer Sanders, Anthony Ervin) could select from a pool of famous non swimmers and have a period of time in which to coach them to swim the best possible 50 Free/100IM/100 Free, take your pick. The times of each of the coaches athletes would be summed and the lowest total time would win. But, would the general public watch this for more than 15 minutes? Eh, not so sure.

If you really focused on the training/fitness issue you might be able to sell it. As a bonus you could promote USMS and a swimming for fitness lifestyle!

When I think about the celebrity diving idea, I think that's even less mainstream!
