View Full Version : What do you do when you can't swim?

I have to be out of the pool for a couple of weeks and I wonder what other folks do when they're forced to lay off swimming for a while. And I'm not talking about sitting in front of the tv LOL, but of alternative exercise that will help once you get back in.:D

Just continue what is already done in addition to swimming, like lift weights, stretching, plyometric jumps, yoga, and maybe run no more than a mile at a time. good weight bearing activity

Well, I usually get really snarky. :argue:

But I try to replace the pool with the gym, or some other cardio activity like bike riding or a brisk walk in the neighborhood.

It really depends why I'm not swimming. If illness/injury, then I try to rest/recover and get back to normal soon.

If it is a time issue, then I'll do other things to fill in the gap.

If on vacation, I'll still try to swim 1-2 times a week for maintenance, and I do a ton of walking anyway.

you speak as if there is something other than swimming.

BLASHPEMER!!!!

i'm gonna guess you dont motocross or enduros, so i'm at a complete loss.

sunruh:rofl: If I bring the Blue Bell, can I at least have a taste?

Actually, swimming has been my only exercise for the past several months, mainly because I don't have enough time in the day for more. So I'm out of practice finding alternatives.

Jayhawk, that is an amazing idea. I had a treadmill and had to sell it. No room for one in my basement. I need to get back to the rec center. They have some awesome cardio equipment and weights. Just have to not stare down at the pool with wistful expression.:sad:

Forget the treadmill. I'm jealous that you can wear shorts to work! (One thing I do miss about working from home.) I'll bet you have a pool right outside the door, too! :)

We are not allowed to wear shorts to work. Laura's wearing a skirt in that video. And, unfortunately, the pool is 12 miles south of the office!

So is that what you have in your drink bottle during workouts? Blue Bell Chocolate Moo-llenium? Your secrets are out Mr Unruh. I may have to strategically place a cup at the non finish end of your lane the next time we race. :)

Why exactly are you out of the pool?
Are you not able to do water yoga, water exercises, aqua zumba, or something similar?

DeniseMW
September 12th, 2014, 09:30 AM
Bill, I had some skin surgery a week ago Wed. and one of the sites has a slight infection. I can lift weights, but no water anything. I would be happy to get into the pool in any form, even water walk with a noodle :eek:or do water aerobics :eeew:, but I can't get in the pool until the areas are cleared up.

sunruh

slap a strip of duct tape over it and go swim....unless its a big flexy part of skin that gets a lot of motion like a shoulder.

What's everyone's experience as far as how long it takes to get back to where you were prior to the break? e.g. upon returning, 2 days of swimming for every day missed... Personally that's usually what I find, if I take a week off it takes about two weeks to feel like I'm back to where I was.

When our pool was closed a couple of summers ago, we took advantage of a reciprocal membership to a local gym. I found that the rowing machine provided a good cardio workout and in good shape when the pool reopened.

I fret and feel really off schedule. Then I give in and ride the spin bike, use the eliptical machine (boring!), walk, do yoga. However, unless I'm sick or recovering from surgery, swimming is the first option. Everything else is a mere substitute.

Allen Stark

I'll lift weights, spin, walk, climb stairs, but mostly be miserable.Nothing is a substitute for swimming.Being in the water is just where I need to be.

Well, of course, K.F.; because, you're a frog.

Being a tadpole, I need to be in the water, too. That is the reason I swim six days per week! I would swim seven; however, my body would rebel. On my days off, though, I feel .

ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGG.I got to the pool today and it was closed for maintenance. It was too late to get to another pool before work.It may be closed all week.I'll have to get up at 5:00 to get to the other pool, but that is better than not swimming.

on days i cant swim...i have to take a shower
ya didnt expect that for an answer did ya now? :D

it seems that being in the water all the time as a kid got my body used to being washed a lot.
so when its not getting a 1-5hr bath it makes a lot of oil and an ewok needs a bath daily!!!

You need to try Cherry Vanilla - it's the best flavor Blue Bell makes ... Dutch Chocolate is a close second.
