View Full Version : Will you reach your FLOG goal this year?

I am getting close to my goal of 500 miles for this year at 68 1/2 years old.
Are you going to get to the goal you set last Jan. ?
I have lost 13 pounds along the way.I'm still too fat, but working on it!

Not me. I set a 300 mile goal, and missed 3 weeks in May with bronchitis, 3 weeks in July/August with an injured back which tied into taper for Naionals, and 2 week break after that. I will hit 250 miles this week, and I will call that a win.

We've switched to more of a quasi-Rushall training approach, and our total yards per week are down from maybe 10,000 a week to maybe closer to 8,000 (divided into three practices). I still try to go for a 4th on-my-own practice on one of the weekend days, but my GTD has definitely taken a significant hit. Quality vs. quantity doesn't register here. I wouldn't mind if my times were decent--but they are slow enough to make me wonder if some major clot has lodged itself either in a heart artery or the will-to-win lobe of my brain.

In past years, I succeeded at making my mileage goals; but, this year I am struggling. I was 12 miles ahead; however, I am 7 miles behind at the moment due to hip problems forcing me to scale back. :bitching: Whether I achieve my goal of 425 miles for the year remains to be seen. On Wednesday, I'm scheduled for an arthrogram MRI, and I may need surgery depending on the results. :censor:

I was well ahead of pace while training for Key West and sadly, the wheels came off in August when some issues came up. Now I'm coaching and have very little time to get in the pool anymore. I was aiming for 500 and will probably only get to about 400 if I'm lucky. That's okay though. IT's been a great year.

Don't have access to FLOG, so no annual mileage goals. I'm happy about that because otherwise I could feel tensed about missing my goal. Nevertheless 500 miles mark is behind already. I assume I can make about 560 in case I stay healthy. But that was not the purpose - most of all I'm happy that I could decrease my PB by 2 sec on 200m breaststroke SCM.
I would be happy to achieve this by swimming around 300 miles a year instead of 500. I've read articles by Rushall but I cannot imagine swimming at a race pace all year round :bolt:. Usually I have 2 taper meets a year and about 2 months before them things are getting really tough. At other periods I work on other things like stroke technique and endurance. I believe this approach protects me from burnout. Logging my workouts and times helps to track the annual progress.

Nope. I usually make it to 500 miles, but barely, so this year I upped it to 550. As of today I'm at 398 miles so I'm not going to make 500 let alone 550!

I had set mine to 500, but I'm not going to make it this year. With being shutdown from May till late August due to health reasons, I'm just glad to be back in the water again.

I should... After this morning's workout I was at 599, and my goal is 650. Unless this darn cold I'm fighting keeps me away from the water, I should make it!

I've set a goal of 500 for the past 3-4 years and made it every year.
So far I'm at 477 miles, so barring illness/injury, I should definitely make it. Rather early too. I usually cut it fairly close.

Someone on my team and I chatted about this after workout this morning. He said he'd like to get to 600. I told him that if I really wanted to I certainly could. But it seems that vacations, biz travel, and then at least 1 illness/injury seem to get in the way. The gym pool is available nearly 24/7 (a bit more limited on weekends), but I really don't like swimming there.

We also chatted about the merits of the whole FLOG/mileage goal in the first place. I said how it gives me motivation to get out of bed and swim, especially in the winter here. It can get chilly, and swimming outside on cold, dark mornings don't always sound good when you're in a nice warm bed.
Very few people in my workout group swim in meets, yet most of us use the FLOG or some sort of mileage goals for motivation.

:lolup::rofl: The fact that you CAN swim outside in "winter" should be motivation enough! I had a hard time this morning convincing myself to get up and go out this morning in 12 degrees.

I too usually make 500. The last 2 years I've set the goal at 550 and made 540 or so. So this year I dropped it down to 500. With the big bike wreck, I was out of the water for 6 weeks, so I'm a bit behind at 437.18, as of today (on pace is 442.47). But I should make it to 500, I think.

Longtime swimmer but new to the USMS forums…
You all are making me feel quite inadequate. Looks like I’ll finish the year with about (only) 120 miles. And that’s above average for me. But I’m a triathlete. So I guess if I gave up running and bicycling and devoted that time to swimming…I guess I’d have at least 300 miles…probably much more.

For the first time since I started recording my yearly yardage, I'm not going to make the FLOG goal. Unless a "Christmas Miracle" happens! Usually get in close to 600 miles a year, this year, I'll be lucky to hit 450. Lost my focus & drive in the summer, and just not willing to kill myself at this point, even though I'm mentally very much back in the game. Now-a-days I'm just recording the amount out of habit!

orca1946

450 is nothing to dismiss!! Many others would be very happy with that total. I live in Chicagoland --- so we always root for the CUBS to be better next year. So start next year with the idea you can set a goal & meet it.

Orca, I know others don't swim as far, but often are much faster than me - it kinda "floats my Boat" if you know what I mean. But thank you. This next year I hope to be able to do healthy yardage without getting injured or burned out. I want to continue to love our sport! We had a cold snap this past week that kept us out of the pool a few days, and the joy of getting back in after an enforced break, no matter how long (or not), is indescribable!

Make sure your order your swimsuit from Nike. The Minutes from the Fitness Committee from the National Convention stated that Nike will not be sponsoring GTD next year. Kyle Deery was, at the time, looking for a new sponsor for GTD. Not sure what the status is of that. Will have to wait until 2015 to find out unless Kyle can send a note to this Thread.

With that said. Thank you USMS and Nike for the swimsuits for the past few years. Its a long way to swim for a swimsuit, but I get bragging rights on my efforts, and on the swimsuit.....and swimcaps....and mesh bags.

Thanks to my hip surgery, I ended up just short of 400 miles at 397.62. Not knowing how my hip will recover, it's difficult to set a distance goal. I just don't know how much my hip will tolerate over these next few months. I know I have to dial it down, so I think I'll go with 250 miles and make a mid-year adjustment if needed.

Year 2014 was the first year I did the FLOG goal setting and log-ins, I reached the 250 mile goal I set. I had a few extra swims to squeeze in during the end of December, to make up for sick days when I couldn't swim. That said, for 2015 I am upping goal and aiming for 365 miles, to average 1 mile a day. Started out Jan 1 with a polar dip and 2 mile pool swim to get on track. I will need to get in 4-5 times a week to reach goal or do an extra long weekend swim on top of regular 3x weekly swim workouts. I wish the free cap was still available for at least one of the lower mileage points, such as 100 miles goal.

orca1946

365 is a good idea - easy to keep track of the miles.

I just made it to my 400km goal on New Years Eve. I had to do an extra 1km at the end of my last session for the year to get me over the finish line, so-to-speak. Congrats to everyone who had a go.

No free awards at all this year:
"There will be no free awards automatically sent to you for the 2015 GTD program. You will be able to purchase a milestone award once you hit any of the milestone award numbers on the chart above."I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in this. Nike and I go way back... almost 4 years now. I wore my suit with pride knowing I was a Nike marketing engine wherever I practiced. I stood up for my worn out Nike suits when the lifeguards told me the holes in it were not "family friendly" anymore. I've put in the miles and dropped my times. I finally brought Nike that elusive top ten finish in the vaunted 40-44 age group. Sure, I actually swam that race in a Yingfa but only because of the shipping mix-up prior to the meet (it was a shipping mix-up right?). And now to find out on an Internet thread that I'm being dropped... well, that hurts! :(

pssst.... Speedo, TYR, Arena looks like I'm a free agent in 2015. Call my agent asap!
