Santa Clarita Masters Club Swim Team Head Coach
Contract Instructor Position
Request for Proposal (RFP)
The City of Santa Clarita’s Recreation Division will contract with a Head Coach for the Santa
Clarita Masters Club Swim Team. The Head Coach will share monthly team registrations with
the City at a rate of 70% (Coach) / 30% (City). This profit sharing agreement is in lieu of current
rental fees associated with pool usage. This position will report directly to the Aquatics
Supervisor and/or their designee. Note: This is a contract position and not eligible for benefits.
The Head Coach is required to lead and build upon the team’s established successes. The Santa
Clarita Masters Club (SCMC) swims year round at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center, a premier
swimming facility in Southern California. Current membership is approximately 50-60, which
includes fitness, triathletes, and all levels of competitive swimmers, including world and
nationally ranked individuals. SCMC is associated with Southern Pacific Masters Swimming
(SPMS) and United States Masters Swimming (USMS).
The ideal Head Coach will possess the passion and ability to continue the growth of a United
States Masters Club Swim Team in Santa Clarita, and will be expected to collaborate with team
representatives to achieve such growth. The Coach will act as a liaison between City staff and
the Santa Clarita Masters Club swimmers, while keeping both parties up to date of what’s new in
Unites States Masters Swimming. The Head Coach must be willing to become officially
attached to SCMC and have no other official affiliation with any other Masters or Age Group
swim club. In addition, the Head Coach will be responsible for providing comprehensive
workouts during City approved times. It is desired that the focus of all workouts revolve around
stroke technique and development, and planned around the SCY, SCM, and LCM seasons.
Currently the Santa Clarita Masters Club Swim Team practices are at the following times:
• M/Tu/W/F: 5:30-7:00 a.m.
• M-Th: 6:00-7:00 p.m. • Sat: 7:30-9:00 a.m.
The Head Coach would be encouraged to recommend monthly registration fees and optimal
workout days and times (provided pool space is available) to increase team participation. He/she
may designate their own assistant coaches, and is responsible for any monetary compensation.
• Develop a Comprehensive Plan to include but not be limited to:
• Marketing Strategies
• Club Sponsorship Opportunities
• Recruitment and Retention Programs
• Membership Incentives
• Maintain the team’s website
• Attend United States Masters Swimming (USMS) sanctioned swim meets and coaching
• Availability to coach mornings, evenings, and weekends
• Conduct routine meetings with team members and City staff
• Conduct workouts appropriate to all levels of swimming ability with an emphasis on
stroke technique and development
• Coordinate with USMS and the City to host Regional and Zone swim meets
• Coordinate with City staff and USMS to host 2016 SPMA Zone SCY Finals and 2017
LCM Nationals at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center
• Background in competitive swimming either as a competitor or a coach
• Certified in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional
• Upon appointment, must be a USMS member/card holder with an official attachment to
the Santa Clarita Masters Club
• Completion of United States Masters Swimming (USMS) Coaching Certification levels a
• Completion of American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Certification a plus
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work as a team member as well as a leader
• Provide comprehensive and constructive swimming technique feed back to team
• Excellent time management and organizational skills
• Effective working relationship skills
• Experience in writing and presenting formal reports
• Basic Computer Skills
A proposal should include, but not be limited to the following information:
• Annual goals with three-five year projections
• Estimated monthly fee schedule
• Estimated monthly operating expenses
• Estimated revenues
• Fundraising opportunities
• Team marketing and promotional ideas
• Team recruitment and retention plans
