So I'm still working on my butterfly. When I look at the store combination I see some people when extending their arms for pull, have their hands pointed down and some have their hands aimed to the side. I notice I go fasted with my hands ai d downward but would still like some input.

Hands should be in the same position as you would be for freestyle.
Think about how you use your arms and hands in free. IMHO

+1, if you value the health of your shoulders. Olympians and young swimmers may not have issues with having their palms face out on fly; but, it will cause more stress on your shoulders. As a soon-to-be 55 year-old Masters swimmer, I value my physical health (and avoiding repetitive stress injuries) over speed. ;)

Well stated Elaine. To stay in the game, we must take better care of our parts.:cane::cake::bed:
