I am very interested to know what times the sprinters out there are swimming on the 100m free and 50m free respectively.

As a newcomer to the sport, I am interested to know, how different 50m sprinting times are to 100m sprinting times.

I am asking because I am struggling to make sense of my performance in the the two respective routines. My fastest 50m time is 30,41s while my fastest 100m time is 1;09s. Surely I should be able to go faster in the 100m if I can do the 50m in 30s?

Some times from my partner (because his are closer to yours than mine are).
Swum on the same day: 50m free 29.67, 100m free 1:05.60 (splits 31.39/34.21)
Swum on the same day, after a training break: 50m free 30.29, 100m free 1:07.99 (splits 32.42/35.57)

What were your splits in the 100?

Thanks for sharing. That is very interesting. I have been calculating a ratio by 100m time devided by 50m time. Mine is 2,27 which seems to be to high ie room for improvement. Some of my training partners are around the 2,24/2,23 mark. Your friend is on 2,21 which is very interesting. Is he very fit?

My splits are 33/36

Here's a link to the FINA masters top ten listings: http://archives.fina.org/database/main/tabulations.php

This should give you a good idea of how the top masters swimmers in the world are swimming the 50 and 100 free.

My very first meet back, after a 27 year layoff from the sport, followed by ~2 months of training:
100m Free (SC) 1:10.16
50m Free (SC) :30.52
ratio 2.30

10 more months of hard training later:
100m Free (LC) 1:03.50
50m Free (LC) :28.49
ratio 2.23
frankly, I blew the start on the 100, should have gone ~1:03.25 which would be a ratio of 2.22

The only time I've swam both in a meet since was
100y Free :57.41
50y Free :26.05
ratio: 2.20

Here is a link to the USMS event rankings database. U can list events as deep as 500 in a given year. You can use it for example to see where a top 30 (or whatever) time is in the 50 for a given year, and compare it to a top 30 time in the 100.http://www.usms.org/comp/meets/toptimes.php?utm_campaign=top_nav&utm_medium=events_and_results

Thank you for sharing. Your time tie in with the little research I have done. The fitter swimmers tend to be closer to the 2,2 ratio which points to conditioning.

Very hard question to address. Some masters swimmers are former Olympians (or near-Olympians) and/or former Division I collegiate swimmers. They are in a whole other league than most of us (back in the day, I swam for a club team until I was 18, but not in college). How "good" your time is is age-dependent. I don't know how old you are. Also short course times (25 meter pool) are usually faster than long course times because of the additional turn(s).

For me:
50 free: usually mid to high 30-aughts (personal best in my current age group 30.37)
100 free: 1:10.90 (only swam once); I did 1:03.59 in 100 yard free, which I think translates to a bit faster
Both short course.

I'll be 59 years old on Monday. Pretty good for my age, but there are many much faster. For anyone under 40, I'd say a very good 50 meter time is around 28...and 26 would be phenomenal. For 100 meters, if you're under 1:05 that is very good...under a minute for meters is the gold standard...not many are going to get there.

Don't race the 50... 100Free is 56.8 for 2017. 1500 is 16:58.9 (times are scm. 40 year old male)
