8th Annual Gary Grandi Memorial Meet - sponsored by El Segundo Masters
************************************************** *******************
Sunday February 10, 2002 will bring the 8th Gary Grandi Memorial swim meet to the City of El Segundo. The meet is held at Urho Saari Swim Stadium, an indoors 8 lane pool which is just as nice as when built sixty years ago. There are plenty of overhead heaters to warm up a cold winters day, but we have never had an El Segundo meet where it wasn’t sunny outside. There is plenty of parking nearby next to the Library and school. This year we have the ability to accept Visa and MasterCard for meet entries.
Events offered this year include a 50 and 100 for each stroke, as well as a 200 IM, 200 free and 500 freestyle. We have nice prizes such as swim caps and goggles donated by SWIM Magazine; swim and you are automatically eligible to win. This year USMS Short Course Nationals is in Honolulu, Hawaii. Come use the El Segundo meet as a gauge on how your training is coming. Host El Segundo Slugs captured the small team men’s and small teams combined titles at Nationals a couple of years ago. The meet only takes about 2.5 hours, come on out and swim a real FUN meet.
PRE-ENTRY DEADLINE: postmarked by February 4, 2002 (entry fee $15). Deck entries are allowed at the meet (close at 9:30 am; entry fee $20). This meet will take credit cards! http://www.spma.net/elsegundo2002.pdf
http://www.spma.net/elsegundo2002.htm
To enter this meet you need to submit your entry times for your events on an "SPMA Consolidated Entry Card" that can be downloaded from: http://www.spma.net/Cardboth.PDF
If you don't know your time enter a "guesstimate," swim the time in practice and subtract a little since you're likely to go faster in a meet! You will also need to send in a photocopy of your 2002 SPMA registration card.

Coaching at World Championships in New Zealand
************************************************** *******************
Program Purpose & Goals
The purpose of this program is to provide USMS swimmers with the best possible coaching support as they strive for excellence at the World Championships in New Zealand, March 2002. We know that many of you do not have coaches or whose coaches will not be traveling with them to Christchurch—we’re here for you!
The coaching staff will be available before and during the meet to provide these services to USMS swimmers at the meet:
Schedule and hold a pre-meet meeting for USMS swimmers on the day before the meet.
Designate an USMS “team area” & hang the USMS banner. Please come sit with us.
Offer guidance & splits during warm-up to those who desire it.
Offer pre-race guidance & post-race comments throughout the meet to those who desire it.
Assist videotaping if possible.
Offer encouragement as needed.
Serve as advocate for USMS swimmers regarding protests & administrative problems.
Arrange for team picture(s).
Perform other coaching tasks as needed.
We welcome all USMS swimmers and coaches present in Christchurch to join us at the meet, in the spirit of fellowship that is United States Masters Swimming!
Coaches
The USMS Coaches Committee has named four Masters coaches to assist USMS swimmers planning to compete at this spring’s IX FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand, March 24-31, 2002.
Head Coach:
Bob Bruce (Bend, OR) of Central Oregon Masters Aquatics & Oregon Masters. Bob has been a Masters athlete, coach, and volunteer since 1973 during his career as an age group, senior, high school, and college coach. Coaching Masters exclusively since 1996, he has developed his local team into an Oregon powerhouse, and his athletes have achieved distinction nationally in both pool and open water swimming. Bob is well known for his technical knowledge & teaching skills, and his experience as Oregon Coach at the past two National Championships makes him well suited to head the USMS effort in Christchurch.
