I'd like some feedback - how important are bathing caps for reducing drag?
I have moderately short hair, and I keep that way so I my hair doesn't flop in my eyes while swimming. Recently someone suggested to me that I'd notice a difference if I wore a cap. Problem is, the main difference I felt was about 10 degrees of extra body heat - not to mention my beet red face. I can't make it through a practice wearing a cap. Any comments?

i also dislike having to wear a cap (it's uncomfortable to put on), but it really does make a difference as far as drag. i find that my neck muscles get a bit sore when i don't wear one (something to do with how i hold my head to reduce drag?). also, it's nicer on your hair (no more tangles in your goggle straps). maybe you would like one of those speedo lycra caps better -- they're a little more breathable.

As I keep telling people, there are advantages to male pattern baldness, and now here's another! All the benefits of reduced drag like wearing a cap with none of the drawbacks such as heat buildup or discomfort! And talk about the post-swimming shower and dressing routine time saved by not having to deal with all that drying, brushing and combing. Bald IS beautiful!

Get a silicone cap. They're like $12-15 but you can put them on even dry very painlessly (meaning without pulling out any hair).

If heat is your issue ... try a silicone cap before you spend money. I find mine to be definately warmer than latex and the cheaper latex the cooler (the thinner too I suppose). For the week my regular pool was having heating trouble, I wore a silicone cap to keep warmer and it really helped. That water temperature in the 70s was delightful. I find that I can't stand a cap when the water temperature really pleases the aerobic folks ... about 84 degrees. My only hope in that warm water is to go without the cap. Fortunately I also have short hair so it doesn't bother me while I swim.

good luck.
