At the risk of being ignorant, what is surf swimming?

Just the joy of going out into the open ocean and swimming out through the surf zone, swimming parallel to the surf and swimming back through the surf. The rougher the better. clyde

In that case, I guess I'm partially there. I do like swimming in the ocean past the surf line, parallel to the shore -- but not in rough conditions.

Great!! I'm not advocating one exceed their comfort level, but it does help to wear them short training fins to protect your feet from coral and provide a little bit of extra power in the surf. I do prefer swimming inside the surfzone, so I can take advantage of all the ocean motion tugging and pulling me along. If you can get hold of some Aussie Surf Lifesaving competition videos, it is just awesome to watch them swim in and out of the surf zone while utilizing the sweep. clyde

I'm sorry, no I don't know off hand where you can get them. The video I saw was a personal transfer from a PAL system copy from a friend. Maybe an ocean lifeguard might know?

In Australia we have a number of activities we could call surf swimming.

Try the following sites.

a/ These contain Surf Life Saving Information and Pics.
http://www.coastview.com.au/site/sls/articles/thrills_and_spills_at_surfboat_state_titles/
http://www.slsa.asn.au/default.aspx?s=aussurflifesavingchamps
email info@slsa.asn.au (you can buy videos here)
b/ These contain what we call ocean swimming competitions.
http://www.oceanswims.com
c/ I recommend the following body surfing site which has videos.
http://www.bodysurfing.com.au/image.php?i=216
d/ The other site of interest is our coastal watch which allows you to view Bondi and Manly beaches live.
http://www.coastalwatch.com.au/contents/default2.aspx

The body surfing site has heaps of short vides though.

Enjoy...
