I live in SD and enjoy open water swimming, but like the occassional lake swim in addition to the ocean. You know, stuff like less chop, warmer water. Are there any lake swims in socal? It seems like most of the lakes around here are closed to swimmers. Boo!

well some people like to swim in Misison Bay for warm and less chop. The "lakes" are all reservoirs and no they don't allow swimming in them. Oddly they allow PWCs.

I can't think of any lake races over the last several years that are swim only in Southern California. There are a number of triathalons that use local lakes. I also enjoy lake swims but there doesn't seem to be much demand.

If you go a little farther, there are a number of lake swims. Northern California has several, Tempe has a series, Oregon has a series(including Elk Lake near Bend which is possibly the best lake swim I have ever done), etc. You can find all those swims through the USMS web sites for their zones.
