View Full Version : Swimming at a hotel pool?!

I will be away on business this weekend - and was wondering if any of you guys had ever done somewhat of a practice in a hotel pool. I may have some time to myself over the weekend - and I'd like to jump in the water.

If you have done this... what kind of practice do you do?

If this is a dumb idea... should I just go to the exercise room and forget about the pool?

Thanks!
Sarah

Corporal Sarah,

If you have a stretchchord, you can bring that and tie it to something and just swim against it the whole time if the pool is long enough. Other things you can do are work on turns - hold onto the wall, kick, blow bubbles for 10sec, then let go, flip and streamline until you glide into the opposite wall.

My recommendation is to get on the USMS Places to Swim (http://www.usms.org/placswim/) site and find a legit place to swim. Any hotel pool will be 10-15 yards MAX, so you really can't do much. Find something that is close to your hotel or near public transportation. You can do some sightseeing on your way - kill two birds with one stone. Where art thou going? Perhaps someone here on the boards is nearby and can hook you up.

Over and Out!

Turns and streamlines no breaths. Tread water if it's deep enough.

Sculling drills, sculling around so there are no turns.

Ooooh that's a good one...but I bet people think you're just a real bad swimmer and you get "advised" by some noodler in the hot-tub LOL

Not when they see how fast you are going with just some minor motion!

Another impressive one is pushoff drills when you do pool length pushoff and glide about 10 times in a row, only taking a breath on the turn.

You can also do vertical kicking in an interval format or a fartlek style. Combined with sculling you can get a very good workout.

It's funny that you guys ask me where I'm going. I will be working at a swim meet ALL DAY LONG, both Sat and Sun (I'm "in" swimwear sales) - and I don't know if the pool will still be open after the kiddies are done competing. So, I'm just going to make the best out of it and swim where I can. I have to be at the pool at 6am and stay until late (both days), so visiting any local masters teams will not be an option.

Good idea about the sculling... but I may get beat down by the noodlers.

Put on a suit and swim during the warmup. Then dry off and open for business :groovy:

Copy that. I may give them a call and see what time they actually open up the facility- if I can swim before warmups... odds are it's the time they told me to get there. :(

Warmups are our busiest time, so I can't swim with the kiddo's.

Sarah,

Ya might want to try looking here also. http://www.swimmersguide.com/ It's a list of pools (not just Masters clubs). Sometimes you can find a 24hr health club or a Y with longer hours nearby. Plus there sometimes are review of the facility (lousy showers, etc.) for some of the pools.

You could add eggbeatering to sculling and eggbeater around the pool. It's supposed to be good for breaststroke kick. I can't remember if you like breaststroke or not ...

3degree: AWESOME LINK, thanks!

chlorini: Hee hee about the breastroke... I love 'em all.

Thanks for your feedback everyone!

I agree with chlorini on eggbeater kicks in addition to sculling. I'd also add Heads-Up freestyle. Use the eggbeater kick treading as active rest (no feet on the floor).

Hee hee hee... the hotel pool was closed for renovations... this is just my luck.

I hit the exercise room, so I didn't feel too bad!

I travel a lot for work and most times I am able to find a place to swim, but sometimes I don't have a rental car and there isn't a pool within a reasonable walk or cab ride. I've managed a few workouts in 20 yard pools, and definitely try to take advantage of any opportunities to get in the water, but some hotel pools are just not made for lap swimming. All of the ideas proposed already in this thread are great and definitely worth trying!

When I do have a rental car or can walk, I try to find a local masters team to swim with. Last week in Omaha, NE, I found a wonderful team and was able to swim early before heading to my work meetings. Check the usms site for teams- http://www.usms.org/lmsc/ I've gotten to know this page pretty well!
