Hell has most certainly frozen over.....John Smith ranked #1 in the 40-44 200IM......:help:

Hi Paul:

John also took first in the 50 Free besides the 200 IM. I don't want to cause a WAR here by I noticed if he aged up he would be second to the swimmer in the 45-49 age group. Congratulations on your 4 FINA Number 1 Swims. You are really in a tough age group with Dennis Baker, Marcus Mattiolli and Marco Colombo.

I noticed for the men's 55-59 long course rankings Allen Stark is first in the 100 breast and Jim Clemmons is first in the 200 breast. Nice forum rivalry!

Evil Smith,

No one cares about the 200IM. The 50 free is the only important event.

Stay focused !

Remember, raw speed and ego will get you through life.

Oops, there we go again. Thought this was supposed to be a part of that other thread - Drugs, testing and swimming...whatever it was? :dunno:

George,

I think the site is getting a lot of traffic. Try again. It took me a little longer than usual to get the site to come up once I put the thread online. You can also try http://fina.org

Click on Masters and then on 2006 Top Ten Tabulations.

Looking through the SCM listings, it looks like masters team USA has a boatload of competiton from the rest of the world. In some events, there's only 1 USA swimmer on the list. Are we just slow or does this possibly reflect the fact that we don't swim SCM that much because we are busy swimming SCY too?

Maybe not many SCM pools in the US.

Jeff Commings

There are usually a lot of Americans in the short course rankings, but I bet lots of people took time off after worlds and were not in shape during the SCM season.

I haven't gotten thru both genders and all the age groups so I'm just speculating based on your statement.

I think a lot of US masters swimmers took the rest of the year off after World's. Some are still out....Our SCY meets were slightly smaller this year than average I believe.

Well, I didn't do a thorough analysis either. I don't know that many people that took the rest of the year off, but I'm sure there must be some non-addicts.

As to the pools, George, that might be an issue. But any 50 meter pool can easily be bulkheaded to 25 meters. Good college pools seem to fit the bill. We definitely don't seem to have as many SCM meets in my area. There are more SCY meets. That's why I was speculating that that might be the cause.

Jeff, you go on those IMs! Who wants to just watch the 50 free? When Ande ages up to Evil and Paul Smith's 45-49 age group, the competition will get really fierce.

It's also a little ridiculous how far ahead of the competition Laura Val is. Impressive!

The standard for the world is always meters only yards in the USA.

Good point George. If we stop for a second and think how many SCYards meets we have, the rest of the world is probably doing that same number SCMeters.

... and quite a few good meets (and results) demonstrated in the European SCM pools are not included into Top Ten.

This happens to (S)he-Man practically every year. Results get thrown out for improper measurements or failure to submit the data or other reasons.

Thanks Jim, just don't give me any crap for the 50 free like certain others. I never swam it in SCM.

Fortress,
You are going to have to make a point to swim the 50m free.

A long forum debate before your time, determined the 50 free to be the "top of the pecking-order event", above all others.

At least that's how I saw it.....
Ian.

BTW, did you check out Dmitri's great SCM 50 time in the 45's? Must be all those Popov lessons. Congratulations to him too!

I just swam it in YARDS last weekend. I think it's growing on me. I'm even trying to fall in love with the 100 free.

Congrats to Dimitri!! Congrast to you too, Ian! I can see why you love those 50 frees. You're smokin' fast. Maybe you should try backstroke?

Not a lot of difference swimming 50yds or meters sc or lc & 100yds and meters sc or lc - free or fly to win you have to go fast.

Ian Smith

Maybe you should try backstroke?

I have a bad shoulder (not technique related) that objects to backstroke and knees that object to breaststroke.

Hence I dabble in fly, which continues to remain a bit of a mystery to me, never having swum it when young.
Ian.

Jim, I hope you've been reading the breaststroke turn thread because obviously your turns stink if you swim the same time short course and long course! ;)

Actually, I just had an "off-meet" that particular weekend. Never really tapered for it thinking I was going to travel to the Long Beach SPMA meet in December, but something came up and I just failed to make the trip happen. I'm usually in the 2:45 ballpark rested.

Our "turns" can always use focus nonetheless.

I'm often in the same boat you are. I don't swim too many SCM meets, but when I do I sometimes realize I swam the same time or better long course just a few months previously.

I don't know yet! I've only swum it once! I'm still in the "trying" phase. You'll have to ask the other FAF Sista. The 100 free is her fav event, as you know.

It just wasn't as bad as I thought. (But I did loaf the second length and was scolded for it.) I don't know if I'll get a chance to have a "physically and mentally abusive relationship" with it. I probably won't even get a chance to swim it in SCM because of the paucity of meets anyway.

You don't need to swim that one. You're much more diverse. Go swim that 400 IM again. :thhbbb:

You went that fast a time in your 100 and loafed the second lap.
First, you and I are the same. I 2 beat kick the second lap and come to think of it, the first and third one too.
Second, can't wait to see when you don't loaf a lap in the 100!
400 IM - the 200 kicks my butt as it is.
And as Natalie Coughlin once said in her book, "The 100 Free is where the action is at!" Amen to that!!

Does anyone know if FINA has Top Ten Recogntion Patches/Certificates like USMS does ?

they have patches. the link on FINA's site is http://www.fina.org/publications/index.php. you just have to scroll down to the bottom to find out how to order them. i've already emailed them about ordering a few for my teammates who made the list, and i've heard back that they should be sending them soon (and it's only been about 4 or 5 days since i originally emailed).

hope that helps!

Man am I depressed!:frustrated:
