Wow, very nice Matt. Are those flowers from your own garden? What were the purple ones? Anemones?

Although the real flowers were your daughters. I guess I'll have to figure out how to post something too. I think I have a flicka account, if I can remember how to access and use it ...

Thanks. I love looking at photos.

Thanks for all the comments. I think Kirk is right about the purple flowers. They are scattered around our yard and seem to come back year after year. Truth be told, they are not nearly as wonderful looking in person...at least not from afar. A true 1:1 macro would be interesting with them, that is for sure. The other flowers are from the Carmel Crossroads shopping center in Carmel, Ca..

Awwww Mannnnn!!!!!!

Anyhow I am using Nikon equipment. To be specific, a D80 body accompanied by an 18-70 AFS, 70-300 AFS VR, 10.5 AF Fisheye, and a 50 1.8 AF. If the lighting gets bad I have a Nikon SB600 flash that can be commanded wirelessly from the D80 camera body or installed on the hot shoe. The wireless works great for reducing shadows in images taken near walls and such. As for filters, the only filter I ever really use is a circular polarizer and that is rather rare. I only use it if I have a very specific purpose in mind. All of my shots are in RAW, or NEF file format, and then "developed" if you will in Capture NX (A Nikon program).

We get those around the moon during winter...right before a big snow fall.
Usually a falling barometer sets up the ice crystals... which can be a sure sign of precipitation.

After swim practice in the 1970's, I remember seeing rings around every source of light for hours.

Yeah, Sunday when I saw the halo it was in the mid 80s then yesterday it was in the 60s. Probably those first high cirrus clouds associated with the cold front were moving in and that's what caused the halo.

The halos caused by not wearing goggles are a whole 'nother animal! :)

Thanks all. We have beaches galore around here. Some of those are from Carmel, Ca., some from Pacific Grove, Ca., and others from Asilomar, Ca..

While it can be nice to live near the ocean, it does have it's drawbacks. Looking at your location, the one that springs to mind is cost of living. One of our employee's is looking to move to Illinois in the near future to rejoin the larger portion of his family. For reference, an average 3 bed, 2 bath, 1500 sq. ft., 30-40 year old home in a nice area will sell for 600K around here. This time last year the number was closer to 650K but things have calmed down quite a bit. From what my co worker tells me, he can buy a very nice place in the outskirts of Chicago for 200K and have equity left over from the sale of his home here. While I would certainly miss the beach and the weather, there is a lot to be said for not having a mortgage payment!

That was at Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim, Ca. this past March.

Yes, we saw Jerry Seinfeld the day after Christmas last year. It was a great show...a little long, but great. A comedian who does not need profanity to entertain his guests is so refreshing. I think another one of those photos was from an earlier trip that year. We went to see Elton John in July last year. Awesome show for sure. My wife and the wife of the other couple who went with us were not big fans of Elton but even they admitted that it was a great show to see. The man is a legend in his own time.

Matt, that would be the far, far outskirts of Chicago where I used to live. We sold our 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath house 7 years ago for $176k. Unfortunately, urban sprawl is pushing those prices up to, but nowhere near CA prices. My cousin's daughter is moving to VA/DC from the Bay area and can't believe how "inexpensive" it is LOL.

Yeah, the bay area (as in San Francisco, etc.) is obscene with respect to housing prices. Were I not born and raised in this area, I would NEVER have moved here. It's nice, but not nice enough to justify the price.

Well, you pay your bank interest or you pay higher taxes.

I wouldn't get all that attached to the mortgage interest deduction - if Congress manages to change the rules for the AMT (alternative minimum tax), that deduction is likely to go to help fund the change. They'd probably raise the standard deduction for homeowners, but folks with big mortgages would probably take a hit.

I have always heard that DC is a high crime area...it would not seem that property values would be high where crime is also high. Perhaps the crime is more localized than I have heard. When I referred to DC, I meant the DC Metro area which includes parts of N. VA and MD which is where property values are steep. My sister-in-law lives in the District though and has listed her tiny but nice condo in Anacostia (not the nicest area altho her neighborhood is decent) for $189k.

I have always heard that DC is a high crime area...it would not seem that property values would be high where crime is also high. Perhaps the crime is more localized than I have heard.

I think your last statement probably sums it up. Otherwise it would be like saying the property values in the Bay Area shouldn't be high because there's crime in Oakland and San Francisco.

The interest I pay reduces my taxable income each year. I would much prefer to not pay interest in the first place, not to mention that loss of a mortgage payment every month would be the best thing since canned beer.

I am with you, Matt - I don't think I phrased my earlier post well. I hate having a mortgage (any debt, really), but I wouldn't be living in my home without one, and in most places, homes are still decent investments. That there is a tax break for paying interest is nice.

(Stud - I just kinda forgot what thread I was in  (see Fort's Forgetfulness thread). I can't even be trusted in an NSR thread now. :shakeshead: I'm ready to ooh and aah over Matt's photography again.)

NO! She's an evilstroker. That's even worse than crawl. Unlike me, she is not a sprint freestyler. Awful starts. But I still love her despite her non-sprinting evilstroke ways.

Leslie, I think you planned this evilstroke thing. Some time a few years ago, you resolved that you'd get back into swimming soon, and try to groom your kids for the next ~15 years so that when they're all old enough, you can have a smokin fast USMS Fortress Family medley relay. :violin:

Alas, Fortson is not swimming this summer b/c track extends into mid-July and he's too obsessed with running, running, running. Mr. Fort only does open water. So I may have to team up with another family for a smokin' fast medley relay. Or, do the fam aquathlons that we have done in the past.

(Are we on for the 50 fly showdown with me getting the 2 second handicap? Are you swimming your new fav event on July 1? I'm sure you can arrange adjacent lanes ... How many SDKs on the start? Maybe SwimmieAvs can take an nsr photo.)

It's in September in the first Saturday after Labor Day. Usually the weather is good, but last year was an exception. There was a chance of thunderstorms, so we were just lucky those didn't materialize. Still, it was pretty blustery out there. The water temp has been fine in my experience. Probably high 60s, low 70s on average.

NO. I refuse!! I don't like bikes unless I'm far away from home. To tell the truth, I'm scared of biking in the traffic here. I'm just a for fun biker. Besides, the swim/run obsession in my family is currently at sub-atomic levels. Even my 6 year old does the 1 mile fun run when we go to 5 and 10K races.

We do enter an aquathlon every year as a family and do relays. Last year, the kids did the whole thing and Mr. Fort and I did the relay. This year it was Fort and Mr. Fort vs. Fortson and Mini-Fort. It was very very close! But Mr. Fort plans to become a biker when he retires, so we may have a Team TriFortress in the future. My daughter is also very interested in tris. So she may be an adult onset tri. At least we'll all be healthy.

Turned out to be kids thinking it was somehow a funny joke. I guess they hadn't heard about *69.
