From Dick Thomas:

Sadly, United States Masters has lost another friend and teammate far too early.

Bob Proebsting, a many-time US Masters All-American and World Champion passed away Monday, June 4 due to a massive heart attack, resulting from complications from his long battle with Parkinsonís disease and his weakened condition due to his cancer treatment 12 years ago. He was 69 years old.

Bob, a member of Tuolumne County Aquatic Masters, swam for Los Altos Masters from 1987Ė1994 where he achieved All-American status in each of those years. His best years were in 1993-94 where he won 18 individual National and 4 World championships in Butterfly and Freestyle events. He was also a member of numerous world record setting LAM relay teams. Sadly, at the top of his game, his swimming career was cut short by a near-fatal encounter with cancer. His survival was miraculous, but the chemo and radiation treatment severely weakened his cardio-pulmonary system to the point that he could no longer complete.

We are all really glad that, after 12 years, Bob had a chance to return to competition and to re-connect with the Masters community one last time last summer at the World Championships. It meant a lot to him to see so many old friends. We will really miss him. He was a one-of-a-kind character and a great friend to so many people in the Masters community.

If you would like to contact his wife, Arlene, you can e-mail her at arlene at sunshinemtn.com. I'm sure that she would love to hear from you.
