Hi Ande!
Will there be a shuttle service from any of the hotels to the pool?

ande
September 17th, 2007, 02:27 PM
yes there will be a shuttle service from the pools to particular
places in austin, plus maybe a few hotels may offer shuttles of their own
i did find out that there is a large volley ball tournament at the convention center in austin which is likely to fill up downtown rooms

Ande, all the UT alums on this board that live outside Austin are coming. At last count, that was three (John Smith, Sam Perry, me).

I talked to Matt Hooper recently and he said he was coming.

There's four!

Ditto for me. QT's are overrated. :lmao:

With a couple of young 20 something Olympic Trials qualifiers in my lane (one of whom is actually going in '08) and a masters world record(s) holder to my left, I get more than my racing fix each and every practice. Can we say :whiteflag:

Not ashamed, getting beat is "so what" if I PB, and it would be awesome to meet all and watch the pantheon of USMS compete...but to spend I guesstimate $2000 on flight, food, room and partying for a meet I didn't really qualify for...hmmm tough sell indoors.

Seems like my revenue stream is about to dry up too...which doesn't help at all, though I can train more!

fyi
I don't have a problem with turning on the bulkhead wall
I've been training in this pool since 1977
an elite swimmer mentioned this to me a few days ago

I'm very near sighted and wear clear goggles

the pace clocks in the swim center are awesome
they are bright large font and digital, the minute hand is set with the time and they are all radio synchronized

Ande brings up an interesting point about the bulkhead at the UT swim center. It is very solid but one thing I notice is that it's a little hard to judge your distance upon approach. I don't know if it's the lighting or the material used for the black mark or what. But I find myself raising my head earlier than usual to make sure I get a really good look at it to decide when to start my turn.

One thing I have done for my last two meets at the UT swim center is use clear goggles instead of tinted. For me it made a pretty dramatic difference. If you don't commonly use clear goggles at meets, maybe bring a pair and experiment.

Ugh. I feel like it is that way with all bulkheads. I wish more pools just swam across if they are 25 yards: walls are so much better!

having witnessed your distaste for bulkheads, i can certainly understand where you are coming from... ;)

however, i must also play devils advocate, that a 25y pool with a bulkhead at one end and 25y pool that is wall to wall are the same length... and will take everyone the same amount of strokes to reach the wall. no one should need to lift a head.

having posted this, i also remembered that bulkheads can be made of different material that may need a good test turn or 8 or 20 to familiarize ones self w/ the grip that may or may not be available. Anyone swam in UPenn's pool? Their bulkhead is painted wood (or wood-esque material)... not the best traction.

It is much easier to tell where a wall is when there is a corner. And I always come up on walls so much faster than in practice or warmups even...

Please Lord, don't let it be like GMU. :frustrated:

I had to resort to stroke counting from the flags on freestyle cause all those lines on the bottom just were :notworking: for me. And I STILL turned too early on my 50 and waaay too late on my last 100 turn.

Definately need to get some early practice in then.

True.
Another good reason to do sprint workouts and sprints in warmup.

Please Lord, don't let it be like GMU.
GMU is definitely confusing. Rutgers doesn't have real T's at the bottom for SCM. But again, you're probably swimming the same amount of strokes no matter the pool. In SCY, my first 25 of a 100 or 200 free is almost always the same pattern. For me, I know when I have hit 10 strokes, its time to be watching for the flags when I breathe and to prepare for the turn.

For those of you who like to lift your heads, practice keeping your head down and looking forward. Eyes go straight to eyebrows and look out the top of your googles. It will take a lot of practice, but trust me, when you get it down, it is faster (see my 200 split of our national-record-setting relay).

julieopl

GMU is definitely confusing.

I noticed that last week after coming back from Rutgers. They still had GMU set up from Tom Dolan meet so we were swimming in the shallow end like at zones and the sprint meet. It was the first time I had ever had a problem swimming into the bulkhead there. I think what threw me off is how deep it still is and you can see clear under the bulkhead. If I remember correctly, Rutgers was way more shallow where the bulkhead was. I remember looking at it before every turn trying to figure out my escape plan during the 1500 and I had decided that I would just go under it and no one would even realize I was gone and in the warm down pool.

The walls at GMU are pretty slippery. I remember having a few bad turns when swimming the other way and actually looking forward to having the bulkhead at one end rather than the wall.

I believe you should be ok with a late arrival.
They'll have warmup all day during the meet, and though I can't speak for TXLAquatics, most buildings usually are open for 30-60 minutes after the conclusion of the last heat of the day for warmup/warmdown.

Did any of you people who are regulars on the USMS forums fly out here to Honolulu when nationals were here a few years ago?
Just wondering because there really is only 1 meet a year here, and nobody goes bacause nobody else goes. Everyone just focuses on the open water races. They would be alright if they were 50-100-200 meters long like real swimming races.

I'd work it...no doubt. Did you get similar feedback from other swimmers that came from the mainland?

Incidentally, a better pool opened here a since nationals were held here. The good news is that it is a fast pool with a seperate warm up pool, and a diving well that is 25y wide and can be used for warmup-cooldown too. The bad news is that while UH is only 2 miles from the hotels in Waikiki (and 1 mile from my house) - the new pool is almost 20 miles away.

Chris: Dana was pretty stressed at the start cause she thought she had more time before her heat :-) But it was a very nice swim. Her splits were consist 39.45 - 39.65 range. I was very impressed.

Ande: Amy was out in 5:18 for the first 500, she was FLYING. She looked sooooo strong.

TYRM: I spoke to Paul last night and he said he was treating it like a 100 time trial and a 900 warm down. Still it's disgusting that after that first 100, he still almost broke 11. Sigh.

It was a hard swim, but I always do that in the last 50. It's really the last 25, 'cause I really, really want to get to that last wall.

Julie--congrats on winning the 1650! Way to go.:groovy:

If you have that much energy left, instead of sprinting the last 25, maybe try to descend the last 3-4 50s? Just a thought.

Wow, It appears that somebody might clean up on some of Chris' backstroke records!!!

Oh, I have always understood that any backstroke records I set can last, at best, until Mike Ross ages up. He'll break 50.0 in the 100 back and break 1:40 in the 200 free; he's a very fast man.

Even so, I didn't expect him to go quite that fast. His first 100 split would almost certainly beat everyone else in the 100. His 200 time was faster than the old 35-39 record (set by Karnaugh, no piker)...except THAT record was broken with a 1:47.7, the fastest ever masters time in the 200 back. Poor Duane Dobko snuck under a very tough national record...and gets beat by 2 seconds!

Besides the Smith v Smith showdown, the 40-44 50 free race will be interesting: Mike Ross vs Shaun Jordan. It's a fast heat, too: the slowest entry is 22.1.

The 400IM race in 40-44 was very fast. 4:23 got 6th place? That time would have been in the thick of the race for first at many other nationals meets.

John Smith missing Paul's record by .01 has got to be the subject of conversation over dinner tonight.

But he got it on the 200 FR leadoff; the relay set a record too.

1 ARIZ 'A' 1:35.40 1:34.48N
1) Smith, John C M46 2) Bailey, Monica M W47
3) Rollins, Stephanie S W53 4) Smith, Paul L M48
21.10 47.30 (26.20)
1:13.61 (26.31) 1:34.48 (20.87)

So we have the old man victorious in the 50 fly with a national record and the younger Smith taking the 50 free with a national record. And then they team-up for a relay record. Judges rule a tie for the day.

Too bad they aren't swimming head-to-head in a REAL race tomorrow (200 free)...I guess Smith the Younger felt he HAD to defend his newly-minted national record in the 100 IM.

I saw Whitney's name in a relay too, that's great. Ande, tell her that her old age group coach Diane Caycee says "hi," I see Diane almost every day (I sent her the link of Whitney on video).

Congrats to everyone, excellent swimming!

I haven't watched very many interviews yet but what I've seen has been good. Except it's disgusting that Josh Davis can swim 3,000 yards/week and go that fast. The Rich Abrahams interview was good, too, and the GoodSmith interview was funny.

I agree. Getting a perspective from the elite masters swimmers is really interesting and inspiring.
Hearing how they train, and what kind of mindset they have towards competition makes for a great interview.

No doubt many younger swimmers will look at these times and be awed.
The results and new records set this year were outstanding.

OMG, the swimming today was SO fast. Just some highlights

Josh Davis - 50.26 100 IM
William Liscinsky - 48.82 100 IM
Josh Davis - 1:36.56 200 Free
Paul Smith - 1:43.79 200 Free
Michael Ross - 1:38.94 200 Free

And way too many others to keep track of.

The typical cast of characters all swam lots of PBs. My original plan was swim 100 IM go back to the hotel and rest and come back for the 100 Back but I was having SOOOOOO much fun watching, cheering, meeting new folks, talking to friends, counting, taking splits, etc. Wow, what a blast. I sit here completely gassed and I have such a smile on my face as I think back on the day. Wow, what fun. Man, this meet has soooo many fast swimmers.

Couldn't agree more! Unbelievable swimming and unbelievable swimmers. I finished swimming at 2:30 and stayed to watch until 7:30, then dined with friends.

The 200 free was amazing -- but where was evil Smith in lane 8?! He must not like outside lanes. ;

I haven't had time to go through everything like I was before, but certain results still warrant mention:

11 Hochstein, Erik 39 SCAQ 4:35.00 5:12.61
23.87 49.85 (25.98)
1:16.12 (26.27) 1:42.50 (26.38)
2:24.64 (42.14) 3:01.28 (36.64)
3:35.90 (34.62) 4:08.97 (33.07)
4:41.18 (32.21) 5:12.61 (31.43)

Should this sort of thing be referred to as "pulling a Smith" or is that too ambiguous?

I've still got my buzz from Austin, and I had to come home early today (Sunday). What a fantastic meet. How can you beat swimming as both a participatory AND a spectator sport?
And the post-swimming revelry was healthy as well. I thought it was only girls that peed their pants when they laughed. I've had enough belly laughs to last me quite some time.

Erik Scalise, one of the fastest swimmers in USMS, scratched both the 400 IM and the 200 back today. Anyone know why?

I talked to Erik a couple months ago online and asked him if he planned on going and said he wasn't because he was going to concentrate on Olympic Trials in June.

About the only negatives I can think of:
We drained the hot water at the end of the day (no surprise) so the showers were cold. And, it really hurts to come back to reality. I know that since I had to leave Sunday and am back slaving.
So much fun. I'm going to be glued to flowswimming during my free time for quite a while.

Yeah, I think we pretty well maxed out what that facility can reasonably accommodate. But, hey, if cold water in the showers is our biggest gripe that's a good meet. Seriously this was probably the best run I've been to. It just ran like clockwork.

Another impressive announcing performance by Mark Gill. He was starting to sound a little like Jimmy Durante late Saturday, but he kept going. The guy's a trooper!

I'm sure I met more new people at this meet than the rest of the Nationals meets combined. It was great to meet everyone!

Now I have some faces to put with the names here on the boards. I'll introduce myself, you meet me as Kim (from Chicago area with Heather, Melissa & Mary). I haven't participated on these discussion threads in over a year. Good to be back and hope to stay in touch.

Quick question about the facilities. How was the pool (pools?) set up? Was there a separate pool for warm-up/warm-down or was there one long course pool divided into three sections using bulkheads?

Speaking of the diving well, who else crashed into the lane lines in there like nobody's business? The lane lines were setup differently than the black lines on the bottom. You don't realize how much you rely on those lines until they aren't centered.

I cut my hand on a lane line during Friday warm-up, and after that I stayed away from those middle lanes with the black lines.

Well, they set them up that way to maximize the number of lanes. If they placed them on the 'T" then there would have been one less lane. But it would have been nice to know that before diving in. I was all over the lane line on Thursday and didn't know why until about 200 in. Whoops.

Great facility and fast pool, but no one will convince me it's good to swim in lane 1. lol Why is the bulkhead chopped off at an angle in lanes 1 and 8?

I had a fabulous time! I love, love, love that pool. My teammates had some spectacular swims, but the highlight for me was watching Josh Davis go 1:36 in the 200 free. :applaud:

I loved the even pool's scoreboard and how it computes the splits right there!

Unfortunately, I closed out my wonderful Austin experience w/ a run-in on the flight out (Continental 7:20 am to Houston) w/ some steroid-popping but fat a-hole. As I was squeezing in through the packed aisles, my breakfast burrito spilled on his shirt and the guy had a cow! I apologized profusely and offered to get him a napkin, but he kept on whining and going off so I felt it best to just leave him the **** alone.

Which threw him further into his hissy fit/roid-rage. :roids:

The thing that sucks is that I had just introduced myself the day before to some probable future teammates b/c I'm moving to South Florida in August, and lo and behold... a couple of them walk into the plane at the height of this episode and as the guy threatens me with, "I'll see YOU when we get off the plane". (Seriously... what kind of a moron makes a threat on an airplane post 9-11????)

I was mortified and I'm so disappointed that my future teammates will think of me as some hot-head when in fact it was some prick having a temper tantrum b/c he got a little bit of egg on his cheap-ass $10 t-shirt!

If anybody here is on FLAQ and knows anybody that was on that 7:20 flight to Houston, please tell them that I am mortified by the whole situation and that that 'roid-monger was just looking for trouble. I can't remember their names, but I remember that one lady is Australian (or at least she sounded like she had an Aussie accent) and is tall, sprinter 30-34 age group if not 25-29.

no lines on the bottom is a challenge

when we train LCM they put in 8 or 9 lane ropes making 9 or 10 lanes but there's 8 lines on the bottom

I've hit the lane line a few times

We've had a drop in swimmer, Terry, Mr Total Immersion himself, who crashed into several lane mates because he gauged his place in the lane by the black lines instead of the the lane ropes

It takes some adjusting

plus sometimes when the lanelines aren't tight
they'll move a couple feet each way depending on which line of people
just swam close to them.

Ande,

I saw that during the 7am practice Monday. The poor Lady Longhorns in one lane were getting squeezed. Especially since the men on both sides (they decided to go every other lane) were riding the rope pushing it to about 2 feet in the middle of the pool (set up as LCM). It was too funny to hear the women giving the guys crap for doing that. It lasted for about 30 minutes before the ropes were tightened.

Would it be possible to designate Slower and Faster lanes in the warmup pool? We have a 65 yr and over lane, but the chaos in the regular lanes could probably be improved with some designation. Or Warm Down Lanes and Warm up lanes?
