White tops Orange, 85-84

AUSTIN, Texas -- Led by two victories apiece from seniors Matt Lowe and Caleb McDermott and junior Michael Klueh, the White team defeated the Orange team by an 85-84 count Friday afternoon in the annual Orange-White intrasquad meet at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

McDermott (Canyon Lake, Texas) opened the meet with a win in the 100-yard backstroke in 49.58 before Lowe (Minot, N.D.) took the 100 breaststroke in 56.27. Sophomore Ricky Berens (Charlotte, N.C.) claimed the 100 butterfly for the Orange team in 49.03.

Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) was victorious in the 1000 freestyle in 9:21.40, and the Orange team's Matt McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.) captured the 200 freestyle in 1:37.65. Senior Jeremy Harris (St. Paul, Minn.) put Team White back on the board with a 50 freestyle victory in 21.02, though Berens responded for Team Orange with a 200 IM victory in 1:48.97.

Junior Jonathan Wilcox (Bellevue, Wash.), a University of Florida transfer, scored for the White team with a victory in the one-meter diving event before Berens tallied his third victory of the day with a winning time of 1:49.57 in the 200 butterfly.

McGinnis added a win in the 100 freestyle for Team Orange in 44.72 before McDermott followed with a 200 backstroke victory in 1:48.01. Klueh contributed a 500 freestyle win in 4:32.44, and freshman Matt Cooper (Bethesda, Md.) took the three-meter diving event with a score of 311.32.

Lowe claimed the day's final individual event, the 200 breaststroke, in 2:02.73, and the Orange team's 400 freestyle relay of McGinnis, Berens, senior Chris Seitz (Taylor Mill, Ky.) and senior Daniel Rohleder (Austin, Texas) closed out the meet with a win in 2:59.89.

Texas officially opens its season on Oct. 12 at the Big 12 Relays in Ames, Iowa.
