View Full Version : I'm gonna be $20 poorer

So I made this bet with my 9yo daughter. The bet was that if she swam 100 free (this past Sunday) within 30 seconds of what I swim it in (on the 28th), I would have to give her $20 (10 to her, 10 to her savings account). She is very competitive with me (we race down the slides at the swim center :duel:) and she loves to beat me.

So I was figuring on her going about 1:35-1:38, which means I would have to go about 1:05, really didn't that would be a problem. So what does she do? She nails her start and does THREE flips turns (she does them well in practice, she just isn't confident in them yet) and throws down a 1:29.37. I was thrilled, cause she looked great. Then I did the math , I gotta go sub 1:00. Maybe in a couple of months, sure, don't think I'm gonna get it in this meet. Ugh, nothing like a trash talking 9yo .

Me and my big mouth, maybe I should have held out for 20 seconds??????

Paul,

I learned my lesson in a "gentlemans" bet w/ the Fortress over a 50 fly this summer. Doing bets w/ women and getting them handicapped is a bad idea. Fort smoked me. Probably will next weekend too.

However, I did win a bet w/ swimmieavsfan a few years ago. In 2004, she'd come from behind to beat me when I swam my first ever 200 LCM back. It was embarassing, since for the next year, all my teammates wouldn't let me live it down that some random girl beat me.
Flash Forward 1 year - I now know who she is, we figure out she was "that girl," and we put a wager on the same event and same meet. Loser buys dinner for winner. Though I was looking to win, I really wanted to lose so I could take her on a date to Ruth's Chris' Steak House. I ended up putting the hurt on her and earning the free dinner.

It's not paying out the money that's the problem. It's seeing the 9yo Happy Dance(tm) that's gonna be disheartening.

AHhhhhhhhhhhhh Paul that is so cute. Yes you cannot make bets like that anymore my friend. My oldest daughter is quite athletic and plays rep soccer. Last Christmas we were in the Dominican and her dad raced her ( he jogs and used to be fast) You could literally see her feet marks in the sand where she dug in and took off. She kicked her dads butt:lmao::cane:. Of course he told her the race was done way back where he was winning.

Ah life.

It will be the best $20 you spent

I was timing her lane so when she hit the first 50 in 43, I knew I was in trouble. She is going to be a distance swimmer cause she just keeps swimming. I don't think sprints are in her future. I don't know where I went wrong......distance swimmer plus she LIKES Evilstroke? Ugh.

But I am her biggest fan and she continues to amaze me on a daily basis so that is what it is all about.

I'm gonna miss than $20 tho :thhbbb:

I NTed all my events so I'll be in the early heats. Guess I should have put down an estimate. I'm hoping for about 1:03 but who knows?

I put down a 1:04.99 based of my LCM 100. We'll see...training isn't going as well as I hoped (injuries...spousal interference etc) but this meet is a barometer swim for me.

Sorry for you loss. :lmao:

However, I would email the meet director pronto and give time estimates. You do not want to be swimming with NTs at that speed, unless you're sandbagging. ;) It's better to make some sort of good faith guess. I bet they'll let you submit times. But do it soon, if you're so inclined.

I definitely see some official colonies grudge races in your future!! I'm forced to race Peg's 200 back nemesis in the 50 back almost every meet.

hey, Hey, HEY :duel:

Hmm, maybe I can do some quick self timing this Friday to get an rough idea. Guess I need to pay more attention ot my intervals during practice. Grrrrr.

Grudge matches? Can I at least get ONE meet in first? Can I huh??? :thhbbb:

Need to start the excuses now, so here goes, good friend of mine is having a dinner party the 27th and combined with having to WORK that day (be there at FIVE AM!!!) I might be a little tired

There, I think I gave myself several outs :D

So, for those who might have some suggestions as to reasonable seed times:

(intervals during practices in SCM)
100 IM - about 1:35 interval
100 Free - About 1:20
50 Free - 38
25 Free - 19
25 Fly - 18
25 Free - all out about 14.5 after a practice.

That's all I can remember now. So gimme your suggestions for the following:
100 IM
100 Free
50 Free
50 Fly
50 Breast
and then 25 of each stroke. I think Fort is right, I would rather be in a competitive heat than in a heat with a wide range of times.

Yeah I put a 1:15 down on guestimation from training times. You and molly gave me abuse for going 1:09.
At least now I probably anti-sandbag and set goals too far ahead.
My LCM time converted to a 1:05 for SCY.
If I strip out the 1:04.99 time...so be it. I'm about 1:12 in my local Y sharing the lane and going from a push.

Paul-

Why not just enter the SCM times? They're at least closer than NT. You should be faster SCY than SCM, so if you want to be more accurate, shave 1.5-2 seconds per 50 off the SCM times.

pwolf66
October 16th, 2007, 04:25 PM
Except those times are the intervals that I usually hold during practice. But hey, what the heck, maybe that's not such a bad ideeeeeeee.

Paul,

If you NT'ed the 100FR (I didn't), we will most likely be in the same heat. Please be so kind after your swim to grab me lunch before I finish mine - at 1:05 you should have plenty of time to run to the 7-11, visit the restroom and shower before I finish. :lmao:

I agree it is much better to estimate a time than swim NT. If you are in the 1:00-1:05 range for 100 fr SCY, you really don't want to be swimming with people who go 1:25. I think your post said those are times you hold in practice. It is interesting to compare your times to mine. I am one of those people who seems to race a bit better than I practice. An example:

My LCM 100 free sets usually repeat on a 1:40 to 1:45 interval - I'll repeat them between 1:28-1:32. I am really trashed at the end of 12x or 15x set like that. This summer at a USS meet I swam 100 free LCM at 1:03.8.

If you go 14.5 in 25 SCM free, that's about 13.0 25 SCY. If you are racing SCY, your dive will be worth minus 2 seconds. Plus it is a real race. So I'd say you should be able to go 26-27 secs 50 free SCY.

If you can go 27 seconds for 50 free, good splits for a 100 might be 29/32 or 1:01.

If you want to put seed times you're likely to beat, I'd go with 28.0 for 50 free and 1:04. I'd say you're capable of the 59 you need to keep up with your daughter!

OK, so here's what I'm gonna try and get my seed times set to.

100 IM - 1:18
100 Free - 1:05
50 Free - 28
50 Breast - 42
50 Fly - 35
25 Free - 13
25 Back - 16
25 Fly - 15
25 Breast - 20

Those seem like reasonable times based upon current progress (tho my coach seems to think that 26 is more reasonable for 50 free, I disagree, I prefer to be a little cautious)

So if there are no dissenters, this is what I will try to get them changed to. May God have mercy on me.

At least we have fun here in the colonies.

Paul, I "found" my secret nemesis at this very meet in October 2005. It was my first meet as a masters swimmer. She's since disappeared from competition though, so I'm in the market for a new one. LOL.

If you swim 14.5 25 free SCM in practice, you should blow through a 28 SCY unless your turn is bad! I think a 26 is very realistic.

I'm perfectly OK though with using a seed time you can beat.
