View Full Version : Importance of measuring Start and Turn Breakouts

Before you start adding a dolphin kick to you start and turn please measure the effectiveness of you freestyle kick. The Hillmen Swimming Start Comparison Chart is a tool given to me by a great coach, Dean Hawks of Wyoming. This chart will give swimmers and coaches an objective way to measure which kick and which distance is the best for you.

A kick that is initiated too soon only reduces speed. Even Michael Phelps should not begin his kick until the maximum speed from the start and turn is reduced to the point where the propulsion from his kick is advantageous. If your kick is poor then you need to come up quicker. You should measure the breakout times of your freestyle kick and butterfly kick to see which you should use.

Good luck and thanks to coach Hawks and Coach Hillmen
