I get a popping sensation in the front of my right shoulder when I pull (freestyle). I feels like a tendon (or something) sliding past something else. Does anyone know what that's caused by and/or what to do about it?

I've gotten this popping/clicking. For me I attribute it to overuse as a beginner. I think in my case it was inflamation. It went away.

Peter - I had shoulder issues in college. Best advice I can give is that if technique does not remedy your popping (as was my case) go see a doctor or a sports med specialist. Persistant issues like this can be a bellweather for real problems down the road.

Hi, Peter: do you generally breathe to the left? In this case the right shoulder generally gets stressed in excess of the other shoulder in freestyle as the right arm has to overcome the slightly increased resistance induced by breathing. Based on what you posted, there are three main possible sources for your shoulder 'pop': the most likely is a thickened rotator cuff tendon that can 'pop' under the AC joint. Less likely to be a biceps tendon popping in and out of its groove in the humerus, and I think least likely absent generalized shoulder pain is an inflammed subacromial bursa.

My Rx tips: 1. initial steps - if you are a left breather, start breathing to the right during practice. Do more backstroke. 2. if it persists, do what 'Redbird Alum' suggested - see the doc. A good reference book if you are medically inclined is Practical Evaluation and Management of the Shoulder by Fred Matsen of the University of Washington "shoulder team" at the med school. Cheers and good swimming :fish2:

Work on proper stroke technique with coach and consult a reputable Ortho if that does that resolve issue.
