I swam just on Sunday. On Saturday, I went to a chess tournament then to a soccer game and then back to the chess tournament (all for the 5th grader). This was a lot of driving so I was pretty tired by the end of the day. I took a bath in the evening, put my sons to bed and then went to bed myself at 8:30 (I had been pretty much dozing since 7:30 but rallied to get them to bed).

I have swum at this meet the last three years (and pretty much the same events each year). The meet was really fun. I got to see some people that I hadn't seen for a while, including a former teammate who was visiting from San Francisco and swam. I felt like an age grouper on the 400 IM because I had a whole cheering section at the end of my lane. This was great because I am still having difficulty swimming fly so I needed a boost. I wasn't sure about my seeds but ended up in the right heat for each event (except the 400 IM where I was in lane 4 and was about 20 seconds faster than my seed). Honestly though, who doesn't like to swim the 400 IM way off the front. I thought that I split my races well. My legs were shot by the end of the 200 breast stroke (I did 400 total breast stroke for the day) and I knew this would happen because I did a pretty hard kick set on Friday with 100s on 1:30 at the end of it (and even when I was doing it I thought I should stop). I am not sure when I swim in another meet. I heard that the Woodlands is hosting our short course zones so maybe then (but only if I can drum up some business for relays from my team).

On Tuesday, we had some excitement. I was kicking a little after our practice was done. All of a sudden, there was a large flash and then all the lights went out. Apparently, there was a power substation that malfunctioned. Other than the emergency lights, the campus was dark (This included the basketball court where a varsity game was about to start). My son claims that he was jumping in the pool and was able to switch directions mid-jump to avoid getting wet.

I have continued to swim. I just haven't had a lot of time to blog. I did manage to remember most of the main sets from the last 1.5 weeks. I can hold a pace on most things (although pretty slow). I am still attempting to balance everything in my life. This is happening somewhat successfully. Last week was hard since my husband was away for a conference. I did manage to get to one day of the November Classic which I will make a separate entry for. All in all, I am continuing to take one day at a time and setting small goals for each week.

I have been bad about blogging my workouts but have kept on swimming. I have felt up and down in the water with some periods of pretty extreme fatigue. My strokes have felt better lately with more consistency on times but my free has been pretty slow (at times slower than IMs for 100s).

Last Saturday, I went to the rec center near my house and swam by myself for the first time in a long time. Our practice had been cancelled due to a a kids meet and a college meet. The rec center is always a bit chaotic on Saturday am and this was no exception. I swam by myself or with one other person but the chaos is with the swim lessons in the adjacent lanes. It is mostly very small kids so there is a lot of crying along with some flying balls and toys. On Saturday, I was surprised though because halfway through the swim, I looked down and there was a person scuba diving with a Santa hat and beard on. I had not seent he announcement but they were having underwater pictures with Santa. There is a Santa scuba diving and then the kids put on snorkels and masks for underwater pics. I was tempted to get my picture taken but the line was a bit long and I had to go to a U10 soccer game followed by an Age Group Penthalon swim meet. Ahh, maybe next year...

I made it to Canyonview twice during my trip. When I lived in San Diego, I was a bit of a swimming nomad and I had been there quite a few times before. The coach told me that nothing about the structure of the work-outs had changed in the intervening 2 decades and this was pretty much true. At that time, they didn't have structured weekend work-outs so I was happy to see this addition. I felt decent. I can keep a pace again--although a slow one. I went to cove as well but didn't swim-- I just watched the sea lions and seals (who are also new since I lived there). I'm not sure when I'll swim this week since I have a lot of work related things that I need to get caught up on plus I'm pretty tired because I stuffed about 5 days worth of activities into three days on my trip.

I've had a pretty good week. I've swum everyday. The 100s on Wednesday were very difficult but I made it through. I had a good report from my oncologist on Thursday (after a two hour waiting room stay)-- Tumor markers normalized, tumors getting smaller. I'll keep my schedule of treatment every three months and see him again in three months. Now, I'm off to San Diego for a wedding. My kids are staying behind so it is just me and my husband! I haven't decided if I'll try to swim yet.

I lived there from 1992-94 and swam at Shiley (located at Scripps Green Hospital) on my lunch hour as it was two blocks from the lab I worked in and I still had the mental fortitude to swim for 90 minutes on my own. They used the pool for rehab as well as for swimming. Patrick Ewing rehabbed there after an ankle(?) surgery and he once asked our master's coach if we were doing rehab as well (He had just started rehab and our coach, Terri was the PT working with him and Terri thought he was thinking that all out swimming was the end point of her rehab program).

    100 easy
    3100 yards

I enjoyed both these work-outs. There was a good variety of different sets and nothing too long. I was happy to make it through the IM set on Tuesday. There was some excitement in my lane on Monday as a there was a lot of yelling by one member directed at another (neither of which was me). Because I was leading the lane, I am not sure what exactly happened except that it involved some malfunctioning paddles, a pile up and some high volume cursing. The same group reassembled on Tuesday and everything seemed fine. I hope this doesn't repeat as it was pretty unpleasant.

I really enjoy swimming long course. It feels almost like a different sport at times. It also helped that the kids team was not there since they have a meet and we got to spread out across six lanes. It was a little overcast so I spent a good portion of the swim on my back watching a group of birds that sits on the top of the gym. There was definitely a struggle for the roof peak going on. (My 6 year old just walked in and asked me to add a smilie so here goes). Hopefully, I 'll make it back tomorrow. He liked it so much he asked for another

    3000 yards

Wednesday is always our sprint/quailty day. I had forgotten since I hadn't been to work-out on a Wednesday since August. I wasn't feeling too sprinty but did the best I could. Thursday was great. It was IM, 85 degrees outside, sunny and the pool was a good temperature. I felt pretty good on the descending 100 IMs and managed to get down to 1:15 on the last one which I'll take since I got a bit of medicine on Tuesday. The pool is rumored to be long course this weekend so I'll try to make a few in between the two day swim meet and the 2 soccer games. I'm just glad my son isn't older because there was some issue with the pool on Saturday morning so the morning session is in the afternoon and the afternoon session is in evening (11 and older girls and 13 and older boys) with the end of the meet estimated at 11:30 pm.

    4200 yards

I'm still chugging along. I wrote the distances on my FLOG after I finished but had a few blanks when I went to remember the actual work-outs. I was surprised that I could remember all the main sets. I went to Baltimore for a conference so didn't workout. I could have found a place to swim if I really wanted to (In the past, I swam with both Ancient Mariners in Bethesda and at Maryland Masters-UMBC) but decided to take it easy. The meeting was fun. I got to see lots of people and the presentation for the clinical trial that I work on was recognized for being the highest scoring clinical abstract at the entire meeting so that was exciting. I am toying with the idea of going to the SCM meet at the Woodlands in November. My husband will be going to be out of town so I could only go for one day which is fine. I am not a huge short course fan (either SCM or SCY) so I am undecided. I like the idea of having a goal and I always have fun at the meets. They have relays at the meet so I think if I can drum up some team members to go and swim relays that might be the deciding factor. This might be difficult though as my team is on a bit of a down swing as far as meet participation is concerned. I'll see.

I swam 4 times since I last blogged. I hit 300 miles for the year today. This 50 miles was less eventful than the previous 50. I have been struggling to keep all my balls in the air lately so haven't had much time to write things down. I know that things will calm down in a few weeks so I'm just trying to keep going forward. Swimming has helped me to do that as it keeps me centered..

  11. A return to long course

    4 x (50 kick fast on 1:15 then 100 moderate 1:45)
    4300 meters

I knew it would be long course before I arrived. I had tried to swim Friday night and we were rained out but the pool had already been changed so I was one of the few who was not surprised this morning. I was pretty beat up by the end but made it through the entire workout. I much prefer long course to short course so didn't want to get out early since I am unsure if we'll have another weekend until next year. I will try to go back tomorrow and possibly Monday am since they usually don't flip the pool until after Monday am workout.

I have been able to swim over the last two weeks but never sat down to put the workouts in the computer. I knew the yardage beacuse I would put it in my FLOG after I left the pool but I don't like to type on my phone so I never put in the full workouts. Today, I realized I was building up paper scraps with partial work-outs on them so I wanted to write them down. I have been up and down in the last two weeks as far as my energy is concerned. My son ended up in the hospital for a week on TPN and pain medications. I spent a lot of time there. Since the pool is about three blocks from the hospital, I managed to carve out some time on most days (when I wasn't reading all the internet craziness about DN's Cuba-Fla swim). My son is back to normal except he has to limit his activities and eat a low fat diet. It's pretty funny to see a six year old (who is super skinny) ask people, "Is that low fat?" I got my own treatment on Tuesday so am laying pretty low right now. My oldest is going to Austin this weekend with a friend and his dad so I'm looking for some low key, non contact activities for the younger one for the weekend. Hopefully, I will get back to this a little more regularly.

  13. Can I catch a break, please?

    600
    6 x (150 pull on 2:10 then 50 back on 50 with paddles)
    12 x 75 on 1:20 25 swim IM order then 50 kick
    2700 yards

I have been feeling a little better and had actually plotted out a plan to get caught up on some things that I had gotten behind on and then disaster struck. My youngest had a biking accident and is in the hospital for traumatic pancreatitis. He hit his belly with his handlebars on a fall and injured his pancreas (He is 6 and really skinny so there was no cushion). My husband and I are splitting time with him. He wants my husband to stay with him at night so I get to go home and sleep in a real bed). During the day, I've been sitting with him in the hospital watching some Looney Tunes and trying to distract him from the fact that he can't eat (and trying to convince him that the fluid going into his IV (Total Parental Nutrition) is actually food). When my husband came, I snuck in a little swim (while the older one was having practice). I came late and had a lane to myself (all the others had 4-5 people in them but no one had gotten in one of the lanes so I lucked out). I enjoyed the workout since it was peaceful being by myself.

    500 swim (alternate 100 swim/50 kick)

    3 x (200 on 3:20 fly/free/back/free/breast/75 free then 150 on 2:30 fly/free/back/free/breast/free then 100 on 1:40 fly/free/back/free then 50 on 50 fly/free)
    3 x 100 on 10 sec rest swim/kick/swim/kick
    50 easy
    3100 yards

I enjoyed my Labor Day weekend and was a bit slow to get started today. My son did a project last year on Spindletop which was one of the first large oil wells in Texas so we made the trip to Beaumont to see the site. On the way home, we stop at an alligator rescue place and saw the alligators and snakes. Yesterday, I found myself in a recurring predictament with the evening work-out where I was a bit too slow for the one group but a little too fast for the next group. I can keep up on sets that are less than 1000 but for longer things I generally need a little more rest. Yesterday, I felt bad because I lapped someone on the first 200 of the main set and then that person changed lanes (when he would have probably been perfectly fine with us). I think I'll have to communicate better when I change lanes.

I did a pretty good job of staying wet this August. I had a few rough swims but by and large listened to my body and didn't overdo it. This let me swim 4000 for the first time since the first week in July. I actually had a little umph today as well. So it is onto September.

    300 kick on 4:30 pull 25 free/25 back/25 breast/75 free
    5 x 50 easy on 50
    3150 yards

This was two pretty good work-outs for me. It's funny though somewhere in the last week my back and free became very close to the same speed. This is for swims 75 and below (I haven't swum anything back of longer lengths so don't know if it will hold true for 100s and above). I'm just going with it. It gives me a little different perspective as I tend to see a lot more when I'm on my back and get to see interesting things that other people are doing. (This is of course also true when I turn swim sets into kick sets). Hopefully, there will be more Lunch Bunch in my future for tomorrow.

  17. Sunday Swim

by , August 26th, 2013 at 11:32 AM (One Stroke at a Time)
    Sunday
    August 25
    SCY

    150 (yes, I missed warm-up again)
6 x 125 kick on 2:10 build each 125 odds whip evens flutter
9 x 100 pull on 1:30 broken at the 75 for 5 seconds with the last 25 with one breath
    4 x (50 breast on 1:10 descend then 250 on 3:50 swum as 200 free/50 back)
    100 easy
    3100 yards

This was the first Sunday practice I've made in several months. Sunday's are generally distance/pace and I was limited in my ability to do this. (The main set today was 7 or 8 rounds depending on the lane and intervals so I did about half of it). I debated not going but decided at the last minute to head over to the pool (leading to missing warm-up again). I'm a little jealous reading everyone's meet reports because I wish there had been another meet here this summer (The Houston area had one). I really enjoyed seeeing people from other teams and hanging out at the meet in June. I would like to do this again. I'll have to wait until November when there is a short course meters meet here (although I may be at a chess tournament with my son that weekend so I'll see).

    100 easy
    3800 yards

I've had a busy few days but managed to get a swim in each day for the last three days. On Thursday, I wasn't particularly tired but I was slow. Our coach even asked me if I was feeling okay. I missed all of warm-up because I was trying to navigate some new on-line pre-authorization system for a prescription I wrote. It seemed like it should be easy but was not. I should have just warmed-up and then started rather than just jumped in the set. Friday I did about 2/3s of the work-out and was still struggling a bit. Today, I felt much better. I met with my oncologist on Thursday and I've had a partial response to the treatment-- all the masses in my liver are shrinking and the tumor marker is in the normal range. Unfortunately, my normal liver is also taking a hit so I will have my medications adjusted and start back on the new regimen on Monday. I was told that the main side effect is fatigue. So, I'll plan to take it pretty easy but still want to keep trying to swim 3-4 times a week because I feel much better and sleep much better when I exercise. Until next time.

  19. Tuesday IMs

by , August 21st, 2013 at 04:37 PM (One Stroke at a Time)
    Tuesday
    August 20th

    600 (100 swim/50 kick)
    3 x 4 x 25 on 35 descend 1-4 round 1 back #2 breast #3 fly
    4 x (200 IM on 3:30- 150 back/breast/free on 2:35- 100 breast/free on 1:45, 50 free on 50 then 100 easy on 2:00) rounds 1-3 swim round 4 kick

    3300 yards

I was really happy to finish the work-out. After the first two rounds of the IM set I was beat but decided to stick it out (and modify the set to do the last round kick). I had a CT yesterday and will see my oncologist tomorrow for the results so it will be a big day as we will discuss what will happen next for my treatment. I am a little nervous because I am not sure what to expect. For now, I just keep plugging along.

    4 x 50 kick on 1:15
    150 easy
    3700 yards

Saturdays are funny because I always mean to get out and never do. The practice is 90 minutes instead of our usual 60 so I always plan to get out after 60 (although today I missed the first 15 minutes so I only swam 15 minutes more than I had planned). The weather was nice and lots of people were there so it was just nice to see everyone and hang out a bit. I think I was a bit perplexing for my lanemates today. I swam in a different lane than usual. I really only put effort into the 25s and the kicking so after lounging at the back I suddenly perked up and led.
